It's SEGA Rally's realistic counterpart, genuinely good.

Rally racing has been huge in Europe since the end of WWII. Rich people with cars and nothing to do in a ruined post-war rubble of a continent started racing each other from one place to another and the rest is history.

Come on now, CMR 2.0 was great. In fact the first four games in the series are fantastic. 2005 was a tad too hard IMO (terrible copilot commentary made it unnecessarily difficult) and then it became totally different with the DIRT games.

>take the smallest shitbox you have, strap an ebay turbo on it, and frankenstein an awd system pilfered by your top selling crossovers
>rules state that this must be a production car to qualify for the race
>sell it for double the MSRP of the fully optioned out trim while having none of the features and even less utility

Why do they do this? Wouldn't it make more sense to sell as many of these as possible to make an even larger profit versus upping the costs so that it breaks even with 200 cars?

It's a multi-fold problem, boomers and white women are at the core of it. Boomers have been conditioned to either destroy or hoard things, driving up the costs for what is essentially a 30 year old shitbox. Women suffer from a severe case of penis envy so they are instinctively attracted to the biggest cars available, bonus points if it's black and is closely associated with rappers. Any gc8 that could've been sold was instead yet another exploder or excursion or tahoe in a sea of these things, and for some reason they drive particularly aggressively inside a vehicle where they can barely see over the steering wheel. I only specified white because they pussy whipped their husbands to buy these cars, all the others buy clapped out pieces of shit with gubment gibs.

In Southamerica rally games were played a lot also. It's obvious it started with Sega Rally absolute domination at every arcade, but the trend followed to consoles because 32bits tech and the rally experience brought the best from each other. Every dude I met back then had either Collin McRae 1/2 or V-Rally.

WRC killed Group B despite it being the fault of stupid fucking fans who wanted to be so close to the tracks they might as well have been the goddamn guardrails.
Then they killed Group A because of "cheating" when in fact they just wanted the sport to be more boring.
Now every manufacturer has to build 6 million homologation cars before being allowed to modify that specific model for rallying, and every car on the track is now a shitty grocery-getter hatchback with ugly fucking mods all over it, shitty paintjobs, 20 thousand sponsors per team and engines that sound like dog toys.

Because a lot of PS1 racing games were designed for the dpad by using speed sensitive steering. It wasn't until the PS2 launched that devs erroneously believed that because the analog stick had a range of motion, they could do away with speed sensetive steering, ignoring that the range was about half and inch and that the average player would push the stick all the way to the left or right by default, leading to an era of mostly forgotten racing games where you can only full lock left and right without reliably hitting anything in-between. And that's why there are dozens of highly acclaimed PS1 racing games and very few PS2 ones.

Rallying was incredibly popular in the UK in the 90s and Colin McRae was a national hero. If he knew anything about driving at less than 110% he'd have been WRC Champ many times over rather than the once he actually achieved. This thrill-seeking spirit is was would eventually kill him at the controls of his own helicopter.
