A theory I read somewhere that I liked: after the events of S3&K, Dr. Eggman/Robotnik sent an invasion force to Little Planet from a space base. Because the flow of time is different there, Little Planet appeared on Sonic's world - before S2.

Thus, Sonic experienced it as S1 - CD - S2 - S3&K; while Eggman experienced it as S1 - S2 - S3&K - CD

My autist headcanon used to be that CD took place after the rest. It just felt appropriate, CD seems more "grandiose" than the others. Eggman's not just fooling around with robots and death lasers, he's trying to conquer time itself, and a whole world is ruined and mechanized in-game if you fail. Sonic goes on his most important adventure without Tails or Knuckles to back him up. But obviously it doesn't really make sense from the perspective of Metal Sonic and Amy going on to appear in a bunch of other stuff even before Adventure came out, plus now there's Mania.

The real answer is LP just appears on Sonic's World every x amount of years, like how Mirage Island appears under special occurrences in Pokemon Emerald or the Comet Observatory appears every 100 years over the Mushroom Kingdom... Until they kinda ignored that fag because Shiggy hates story telling

Sonic CD started as an attempt to make a Sonic 2.

It's either
1 -> 2 -> CD -> 3
Or
1 -> CD -> 2 -> 3

Since 2 came out before CD, I think most people will assume the first order is correct. Not that it matters, since none of the games are connected (besides 3 and k, quite literally).

My headcannon considered it to be Sonic 1.5 because the cd add on was not mainstream as say selling the genesis 2 with sports game to normies. The graphics were not as nice as Sonic 2. So it’s Sonic 1.5. Whatever story there is is going to be irrelevant non canon because again it’s the CD nobody played.
