this would have been a lot easier if this was on /v/, but sony moviegames are not retro unfortunately
People will get mad at me because japan = good, but honestly almost every single "digital comic" falls into the non-game category, they're cool as fuck to look at from afar with screenshots and random clips, but I sure as fuck would have been mad if I paid full price for it when they were current. Imagine if every Sierra and LucasArts adventure game removed all puzzles and just connected dialog scenes with a "next" button.

People thought interactive movies were going to be the future of games when CDs first hit. In a way, story-driven games are definitely a thing, but not like the first wave of CD games, like Night Trap. Systems like the Sega CD, 3DO, and CD-I (and obviously PC) had games like this.

Animal Crossing really stretches the definition; There isn't really any challenge but for the self-made. Then again, there are rewards to obtain, though the game never really pushes for you to have to do them.

One could argue most games that don't have outright win/lose conditions or any clear stated goal or objective are stretching the definition. Mario Paint is probably the most beloved and well-liked example.

desu I'm sort of waiting for real time movies to become a thing.
No, I don't mean like modern games that are cutscene after cutscene with some gameplay thrown in. Just a literal 90 minute movie that's rendered in real time graphics on a console.

SimCity, almost. It's borderline because you can lose, but it's really hard to. So it still counts as a game imo, but later sim games are basically baby proof so you can't fail at all and at that point it's no longer a game to me.

The way the ad lays it out, it kind of makes it seem like a first person, live action Dragon's Lair, in that you have to react correctly to certain situations. Was Rob Schneider still relevant in 1997 for him to be a selling point?
