This ending hits a very specific childhood fear of existential dread, wondering if tjey even exist, and the loss of friends. Two things that I think kids often dream about and fear. It reminds me of various scenarios like moving away from a close friend or switching schools by force. I think that's what makes the ending hit so hard. You never know what you have until it's too late.
