Just finished Sakura Taisen 2, and boy was I ready to take a break after marathoning both games. I A-ranked Nights and did a couple runs in the Panzer Dragoon shooters. Recently I've been juggling Dead or Alive, Sonic Jam, and Panzer Dragoon Saga, the latter of which is very unusual but fun as hell.

My current backlog is:
Atelier Marie
Tokimeki Memorial
Lucienne's Quest
Nadesico (but I have to rewatch the series first)

Lucienne's Quest is tempting as a port of a 3DO game, but I also love the later Atelier entries, so I have a lot of interest in that. Not sure what I'm going to move on to after Saga. I've also got Puyo Puyo 2 in the mail, but that'll just be for when I need a break from WORDS WORDS WORDS games.

There's way too much interesting stuff for this console. Got something like 30 or 40 games I still want to get for it.

saturn emulation sucks, either you have to have a good computer or a dedicated device to even work. It would cost more to upgrade my ram to get semi decent performance (I can't even get Sonic R to work at all on an emulator) than to buy a second saturn, and even if my computer was good enough to emulate saturn, I highly doubt it would ever be better than the system itself. And my phone definitely can't run saturn.

>>8093158
Yep, it's Blank of 3 Years. Honestly, I am shocked to see such a glowing review of it only because it actually was THE game that made me buy a Saturn recently. I've put off watching the film because I wanted to play the game first, and before I could do that I had to learn Japanese, so it's been a long time coming. Maybe I'll make that a priority if it's that good. After hours of Sakura Taisen, I just needed a little break from text-heavy games.

Had no idea Hayashibara was in Sword & Sorcery! That's cool. I fully expect it to be a piece of shit game, though I hope it has some kind of charm to it. From what I hear, it's very short, so that's good. Nice to know the others are good.

If there are any games you'd recommend I'd love to hear about them. It's nice to see someone who really seems to know his shit about Saturn games here.

the only possible emulation related reason you'd need to upgrade RAM is if you were trying to run a 7th gen system emulator
you can run Sonic R under SSF on a laptop from 2009 with 2GB RAM

the whole "Saturn emulation is extremely taxing" meme is from the mid 2000s

>I've put off watching the film because I wanted to play the game first
This isn't really a spoiler but I guess I'll spoiler it anyway: blank of 3 years doesn't actually have any significant connection to the movie

>If there are any games you'd recommend
Aside from blank of 3 years, my favorite games on Saturn at the time were actually ports from other platforms, like Kayuusei, Doukyuusei, YU-NO, Princess Maker 2...but you can play those a lot of ways these days. (Though I think Doukyuusei ~if~ on Saturn is still the best voiced version of Doukyuusei because of how they butchered the voiced Windows version(s). The non-voiced "original PC-98 text" version Windows Doukyuusei 1 is fine though.)

Some neat Saturn original/exclusive stuff:
Quo Vadis 2 - non-building RTS with configurable giant robots; maybe better to call it an RTS version of Power Dolls? Has a large cast of replacement characters that get called in if one of your current characters dies, all voiced & with their own comms-window animations. Haruhiko Mikimoto (Macross) character design. (And Hayashibara again, heh.)

Tengai Makyou Dai Yon no Mokushiroku - Great RPG with pretty 2D art and full-screen animation in battles. I haven't played any other Tengai Makyou games so I can't compare them but this is certainly a good game. (Also on PSP but "disturbing" story content was censored to get a CERO A rating.)

Doukoku, Soshite... - pretty enjoyable first-person point & click survival/murder-mystery game of being trapped in a mansion with a killer. The situation is reminiscent of elf's "Isaku" and has the same artist. Got a remaster on Vita/PS4 which as far as I can tell didn't censor anything.

Langrisser I, II, III, IV, V
-This is a series that's had parts on various platforms, but I think Saturn is the only place that has all 5 together.
Saturn version of II has an exclusive extra ending.
The only other platform with III is PS2 but I've read it's a bad port. (https://w.atwiki.jp/gcmatome/pages/2366.html))

Marica - Shinjitsu no Sekai
-Weird RPG set in modern day about a trio of psychic girls. Not as a good a game as something like Tengai Makyou but has some amusing elements, like infinitely stackable buffs/debuffs even on bosses.

Shiroki Majo -Mou Hitotsu no Eiyuu Densetsu-
-Third game in Falcom's Legend of Heroes series that became the current Trails series. This is on many platforms but the Saturn version has a unique look that sets it apart.

Tactics Ogre - Everybody knows this game but the Saturn version is the only one with voiced dialog.

Linda Cube Complete - Semi-famous weird RPG. Originally a PC Engine game, the Saturn version is the "true" release of the censored PS1 remaster, thus the "Complete" in the name. Arguably the best version, but the PC Engine version is interesting too for the original art.

Linkle-liver Story - Cute action RPG

Anearth Fantasy Stories
Gulliver Boy
-These are two enhanced ports of PC Engine RPGs. Don't know what all the differences are but the Saturn versions have nicer graphics.

Melty Lancer
Hyper Securities S
Battle Athletes Daiundoukai
-if you're in need of some more Princess Maker/Graduation-type games

Unbelievably based, anon. Thanks so much. I had a lot of the multiplats (Yu-No, etc) on my list, but perhaps unsurprisingly, it's hard to get a decent list of exclusives for this system and I had no idea where to start.

Going to add these all to my list and check them out ASAP. Marica looks like the exact kind of 90s schlock I bought the console for, but a lot of these definitely pique my interest. Didn't even know Tactics Ogre was on Saturn. The great thing about Japanese games like these is that they tend to be (relatively) reasonably priced, though it's sad the western retro fad seems to be affecting that market as well to some degree. Hope I can grab the majority of these easily.

every game i had was scratched AF, due to the shite cases which couldnt hold discs, even the ones that were not made of cardboard, and the market price of some is getting ridiculous.

Holy Ark is a first-person perspective dungeon crawler, which in some ways sets up the plot of the SFIII trilogy; it takes place a decade or so before the events of III, but in a neighbouring kingdom which isn't visited in III, but features a few characters who appear later.

The three scenarios composing III are intended to be played in order; certain choices made carry over from scenario 1 to 2, and 2 to 3. Shining Force 1,2, CD, etc., have no bearing on the plot of 3, and according to accepted lore take place elsewhere on the globe. Wisdom has some ties to 2, but these are written out of the Working Designs localization, but apparently are retained in the EU localization.

Wisdom is probably only worth playing if you enjoy the other Shining games and appreciate the sort of world they share -- all the Shining games through III are the product of a fairly close-knit creative team, so the writing and tone remains fairly consistent throughout.

My PC and phone are easily replaceable, and the software for them aren't dependent on a single, unchanging specification. I can still run many PC games from 20 years ago on a modern Windows 10 PC, and emulation has kept many older PC games working (plus, because of the wide variation in PC hardware, emulation differences vs any particular set of real hardware doesn't matter nearly as much).
In contrast, all of my oldschool consoles are dying and the software for them depends on an exact set of hardware that is no longer made. At some point, I'm going to need to emulate no matter what.

>>8093196
What is your CPU?
Are you using SSF to emulate? Mednafen's Saturn emulation needs a way faster computer, but SSF was designed to run on hardware from the mid 2000s, it genuinely should work, unless you have some netbook trash.
Do you have the BIOS files and everything? (check the emulation wiki in the /vr/ sticky for how to set things up)
Do you have a disc mounter (or if you can't bother setting that shit up, do you have a disc drive to throw a Saturn game into on that machine)?

I think you owe it to yourself to complete it, and I don't know if it's a halfway point either. There are two clear times where the fun isn't there anymore.

Firstly when you see the high towers above where the ancients were and it's all decayed and gone, Secondly when you are high above the world and learn the secretes of the Ancients

Panorama version needs a bit more grunt since it has to emulate 3 system boards, one for each screen.
