It appeals to teen angst/violence but not so over done that it gets awful as you get older
Kinda like gore action flicks of the 80s: over the top but can still be loved.

>> No.809230

I really liked the conquest mode in one of the later ones (where you got to run around different realms and get treasure and whatnot).
But that's probably because it was more RPG and less Fighter.
That said the characters are all distinctive (hur hur recolor) and that appealed to my younger self.
Nowadays... not so much.

A real-life conversation I remember having as a kid. Younger people are always going to want to play the 'mature' games because it makes them feel 'mature', when in actuality, maturity comes from playing whatever you want because you enjoy playing it, not because the amount of violence or suggestive themes.

I remember when the first MK was released at our local arcade.

Everyone loved the gore but hated the play control. This was at the height of SF2 mania and MK was considered borderline unplayable at first.

Eventually people discovered the cheap tricks and the one unbalanced character (sub zero), and this made it slightly less terrible. It was never really huge but it attracted more people watching than mos other games.

But today, blasted on weed, ripped on acid, wasted from not getting enough sleep on Lisa's bedroom floor the night before, without a crumb of food in his stomach, the idea of really seeing a guy get babalized was so exciting that he thought he might actually throw up or wet his pants.

At the time it was one of the first violent video games, and it was bloody, which was a big deal at the time.

That was actually the game that made me switch to SEGA/SONY instead of Nintendo, because Nintendo made their version of the game have gray colored sweat instead of blood. From that point forward, I knew Nintendo would be the family friendly console and I was gonna have to find something else.

( I would say Shaq Fu is better than the original MK and possible MKII) .It's controls are shit, it's mechanics are shit, and for the most part those who know how fighting games work will not play it. MK9 and UMK3 are the only decent fighting games in the MK series.

But it did make violence glamorous. That's all it had. Tobias Boon never really cared about making a good fighting game, he cared about making a good violent game.

Awww man, I have such fond memories of UMK3. After school I used to go to my friend's house, we were in sixth grade. He had an older brother in eighth grade who'd call his friend over. The four of us would put on the 2v2 team battle mode on SNES (me and my friend vs the two older guys) and play for like two hours straight. It happened so unexpectedly, none of us thought that we'd be playing UMK3 on SNES of all games when we had an N64 with Mario Kart et al sitting right next to it.

I was good, my friend and his older brother were shitty and the last guy was also good. I knew this one fucking dial-a-combo from Robot Smoke that was guaranteed something like 42% damage every time if connected with the teleport uppercut and spear (scorpion get-over-here type) move. Used to piss them off so fucking much.

It wasn't a great game, very unbalanced, dial-a-combo shit is cheap, but it will always hold a special place in my heart. Plus the single player was a beast to beat, at least on the SNES version. I have one video recorded from when I was like 9 playing through it and I managed to successfully beat it in the video. Felt pretty good. The roster was good, too.

I hated mortal kombat when it came out.
Loved Way of the Exploding Fist and Yie Ar kung Fu from the beginning. Moves had to be precisely timed. Moves corresponed logically to real moves. 32 or more moves with joystick. Twitch speed and exact distance.
(or for the real connoisseurs: Shanghai Kid (1985) which had a remarkably advanced kombat system,)

Mortal kombat comes along:
make believe martial arts, fantasy moves
gimmicks and gore more important than gameplay or depth
most joystick directions are empty, one or two special move combinations are all that matters, uppercut frenzy

Didn't care for the rest of the cast much, but that Scorpion, Sub-zero, Reptile, Rain, Noob Saibot, Ermac, and Smoke were awesome. Better in the 2D games than in 3D though. They tried to make them too different from each other in the 3D games, and I liked them more when they all looked and felt familiar but with different strategies and usefulness coming from their special attacks

I don't think it's stupid. (Mainly because that's the exact reason I loved it growing up.) We're probably the same age.

I spent more time pretending to be Reptile with my friends than actually playing the damn game. I loved the story, and the world. To a dumb 10 year old it was really original.

For gameplaying's sake I really did enjoy trying to master fatalities and special moves.

Favorite out of the series was probably MK3.

I had some of those comics too!

I also wrote in to Cracked magazine and bitched them out for making fun of Mortal Kombat in an issue. I said something like "Why don't you go make fun of Leonardo DiCaprio or something!" and they sent me back this really dry letter with a copy of their newest issue. Pic related.

Easy inputs led to a simplified combat system that was easier than most other fighting games.

A focus on style that led to this weird Metal/Kung Fu/Japanese Mysticism world that is completely retarded but in a way that makes everyone kind of like it.

One of the few fighting games that worked on most controllers without need of an arcadestick (though it depends on your pad).

Oh wait, it isn't, because Americans aren't interested in kiddy-Quake-3 bullshit. It's all about that GRITTY Call of Duty.

Meanwhile, Japan still has a bustling arcade business and a great, "toughen up or die" arcade culture.

>Call me when Quakecon gets popular again outside of its own niche.
>its own niche

Its niche being people who like putting thought into their gameplay, hence why the Japanese don't play it. The japs like games where they can just practice the same thing over and over again for years with as little variables as possible. Anything requiring on-the-fly intelligent thinking, they shy away from, especially if it'll require more than a few seconds of concentration

>> No.811502

The Japanese don't play it because they don't like FPS.

All the things you mentioned about Quake are shared by the grand majority of fighting games, and most Japs do better than Americans even after practicing games they generally don't like (UMvC3).

It's about practice and the culture that facilitates your thought processes. Japs have a brutal arcade culture and also put a lot of practice into fighting games, making them good at those.

Quake players had a intense online culture to play with and the players had a lot of practice, making them some of the best FPS players in the world.

Go fuck yourself.

>The Japanese don't play it because they don't like FPS.

Right, I already told you they don't like games that require real skill and thought

>All the things you mentioned about Quake are shared by the grand majority of fighting games

In an FPS you have to navigate around a map, restricting your opponent from reaching the critical points and items by moving more gracefully than him and outaiming him in a precise 3D space with the intuition to know what weapon to use at any time over the course of 10 minutes. In a fighter two guys on a small 2D plane slap buttons for combos they memorized until one of their health goes down, ending in less than a minute

FPS has far more to take into account, and the few things it shares with fighting games it does a lot better. Fighting games are a joke in the world of competitive video games

The first thing out of lots of Japanese players' mouths when they first saw Darkstalkers in action back in 1994 was "Holy shit, it's like a Disney cartoon!" Famous fighting game player Sako has even gone on the record as saying that was his first impression back then.

Mortal Kombat was literally the only fighting series I played as a child, I judged games by the graphics, so I refused to give the other guys a fair chance, they were ugly to me. It really was pretty cool at the time because that sort of gore was still new and kind of a shocking novelty. Game was pretty fun too and the characters (and their mannerisms) from the first couple of games were extremely memorable.

One of the biggest facets of pop culture back then was edginess. MK was on the very cusp of that and helped usher in that era where ads could say "YOU BABIES STILL STUCK ON [rival established franchise, usually brighter and anime-inspired]? LEAVE THE WET DIAPER BEHIND AND GET [new video game], THE MOST GORY AND VIOLENT AND HARDCORE EXPERIENCE EVER."

Anon, you know how some people have THE favorite franchise? Like there's zeldafags or SW fans who have to consume anything even tangentially related to their favorite brand, right..?

MK is like that for me. Franchise of the year all years.

I just fell in love with the universe as a kid before even getting a chance to play any of the games. It's like it encompassed everything cool that my feeble 6-year -old mind could conjure.

>dat mysterious, sinister atmosphere (pic extremely fucking related)
>dem iconic character designs
>dem NINJAS, NINJAS EVERYWHERE
>dat hundreds of secrets that fueled an entire generation of crazy, outrageous schoolyard rumors
>dat badass soundtrack with deliciously evil Asian undertones
>dem over-the-fucking-top finishers

Oh, and the actual fighting is also fun, I suppose.

The main reason I love MK is the story, though.
>in b4 lol playan fightan gaems for the story

Seriously, the MK lore and characters are developed enough and expansive enough to support a full-blown epic RPG on the scale of Mass Effect. The untapped potential is enormous, and it breaks my heart not to see it fully realized. I love me some Jade Empire, but the whole time I was playing it, I was thinking "why couldn't this be an MK game?"

If I see something like that come to fruition in my lifetime, I can die a happy man.

I think MK4 is unfairly shit on. It had a decent fighting engine, graphics, good fatalities (I think Scorpion or someone had one where he rips off the guy's leg and starts relentlessly beating the dude with it. Maximum lol) and lots of new characters. It was fast, too. Plus it had this evasive 3D move where the guy could take a step forward or backwards in 3D to avoid a projectile. I thought that was kinda cool. It also had weapons which were badass as fuck.

I also enjoyed the story FMV videos for each character that you get to see when you beat the game.

Why is MK4 hated on?

Of course, I'm aware of that now, but as a child, I saw 'real human beings in cool outfits' vs 'poorly drawn sprites', or 'extremely low polygonal count'. I remember when my arcade first got a Killer Instinct machine, we all crowded around, I took one look at the character select and walked away. I had no idea that MK3 had borrowed from them.
