Positioning based combat is a meme. It's a leftover from the fixed camera era when RE was an action adventure game and not a purely action game. RE4 would benefit greatly from walking and strafing while aiming. There needs to be a handicap for walking while aiming though, such as 200% more frantic gun sway, to incentivise players to hold on their ground unless very necessary.

I don't even find the original RE games scary at all personally but 4 is pretty much horror in theme only and outside a few areas with the chainsaw guys / chicks and the first few encounters with regenerators it doesn't really try to be horror themed. There's a few good tension moments like when you're guarding that one house and when the parasites break out of people's heads to scare the shit out of you but overall, especially in the second half, it doesn't even try.
Though no RE game tries to be scary once they hit the lab section anyways

The first remake just isn't fun because of the countless stupid inconveniences they decided to mash in. Why can't i escape zombie grabs without additional items? Why do i need to burn them to make sure they stay dead although i already wasted ressources on them? The other puzzle related stuff was pretty smart (even the doorknob shit) but the game is fundamentally not fun.

In the early games, if you want realism, you should be able to loot weapons and ammo from all corpses, because we know you'd be able to find stuff on zombie cops or soldiers and every dead guy who got overrun who had a gun. Tank controls are precise and responsive, but your movement options are limited to make it scary. Most brainlets are probably going to articulate their point badly when trying to defend tank controls, though and we end up with that image.

I think it just comes down to preference. RE games were designed with them in mind, so I'm not going to use that analog control, since it breaks the game and lets you run around like an asshole easily avoiding zombies. But Silent Hill 2 is a joke as far as difficulty goes, so it doesn't matter. Fatal Frame 1-3 I've only played with tank controls, since I think the camera changes would be fucky without them, like how you have to constantly reorient the stick in Devil May Cry 1 due to it having analog movement, but being designed like old RE with fixed camera angles.

I agree. The prerendered and fixed camera system allowed it to be more movie-like with its planning. They could do interesting shots like ones where the camera was claustrophobic and pointing through a window frame and so on. This coudl add to the horror aspect and let them plan exactly what you would see and experience. With player controlled cameras it completely changes everything and means a lot of scripting and planning just doesn't work unless you take control away often and do cutscenes, but that would be more jarring.

The prerendered backgrounds with fixed cameras will always be the peak of the series for me.
