games like HL2, L4D, halo ODST & the 3D fallouts are probably my go to for atmospheric games.

i really love wandering across an apocalyptic wasteland or a war torn city.

Wing Commander is pretty atmospheric. Homeworld also comes to mind as an atmospheric space game, mostly because of the music

Resident Evil 2. Police station. There's an outside staircase that connects the first and second floor. I would stand there and listen to the wind and zombies.

for a game with practically no plot it has an awesome feel to it. surprised how much I enjoyed black. the shootout in the shower/bathroom with my shotty was top 10 fps kino.

Recently Syberia
The Alpine Village, an ageing University with a tropical railway station, ruined industrial city/spaceport and a forgotten spa by the Aral Sea; all of these are memorable locations

I hated the atmosphere of Black. Can't put my finger on it but it just completely and utterly depressed me for some reason. Which is a shame because it was a really fun game to play.

To expand on this I always loved the marshalling yard. The music, the location, the fact that it's weirdly serene and you're miles from the city centre. I just love it. Biggest shame of the remake was that it was missing.

peculiar choice, didn't expect someone to choose a horror game but it makes sense to want to juxtaposition safety with danger

Resident Evil's always had a comfy atmosphere despite it being a horror game. I feel the same about Silent Hill.

i prefer shenmue 1. i lived in seoul/s. korea in the late 80s and early 90s and although the game is set in japan it was very much like my neighborhood...arcade included.

i feel like lunar 1 on ps1 is the comfiest jrpg ever. i played the sega cd when i was 13. the ps1 version blew me away when i was 18/19.

if we can include modern games...what remains of edith finch or gris are two games that have the best atmosphere for me.

Wish we could get a proper Cyberpunk sim like this again. Or maybe another sim set in another genre-city like fantasy or something.

Moon is maximum atmosphere if you let yourself be totally immersed in it. If you get stuck don't look up a walkthrough but try and follow a single character for an entire day (or week) to see what they get up to, or just hang out in a specific area an entire day to see what happens there, there are always surprises.

On top of this the game encourages just waiting around and chilling by having an in-game CD player and tons of collectable CDs full of original music composed just for the game.

Clock Town from Majora's Mask, although it does feel smaller to me now than when I was a teen. I always wondered why a game about people in denial of the impending apocalypse managed to feel so homey
