Didn't saw a thread to solely talk about the N64 (only for talking about certain games) so here's one.
Been in the mood to play a N64 Platformer and I was thinking Rocket Robot on Wheels or Space Station Silicon Valley (I have a patched rom that doesn't crash if you use the expansion pak and also fixes a glitch about being unable to get a certain collectable), which one would you recommend? Feel free to discuss anything involving this console too.

play rocket, it's brilliant and changes wildly level to level
SSSV is pretty bland once you get past the allure of having so many forms to control. none of them are particularly fun

I'm waiting for that Banjo-Kazooie Nostalgia 64 romhack to release, it looks very nice.

>> No.8083983

Stared at my N64 roms in RetroArch for like 30 minutes.

This system really was a dud. I'm tired of playing the "classics" on the 64. Played the same 20 games to death. There really is very little to play on the system after the handful of go to games.

Opposite for me, I have already played the most popular games (outside of a few ones) so finding games I couldn't play back then or are often overlooked is a great experience.
There's also a few JP only games I want to try one day like Shiren 2, Sin and Punishment, Project Wonder J2, The Custom Robo games and Bangai-O.

Just play the same games then
N64 has literally the best games of all Time. Literally genre defining. To the point where playing other games such as on Saturn or Playstation that are clearly inspired by an n64 game but don't have the refinement is totally intolerable
I really have no idea how people tolerated 3d games without an analog stick.

Why did the Nintendo 64 have so many first person shooters, but no light gun games? Why did the Gamecube have basically no first person shooters? Why didn't the N64 get good fighting game ports? It seems more than capable at all these things especially compared to Playstation but instead it just got shooters,3d platformers, and weird slightly experimental 3d adventure games

I tried dumping my N64 collection with a Retrode2 but unfortunately it turns out to not be compatible with all ROM chips used in N64 games (16mb LHR) and there doesn't seem to be official support anymore either

probably because the n64 wasn't really that big with the japanese audience who preferred those kind of games, hence the lack of arcade-style games outside, the N64 got quite a few good arcade racers and sports games at least, I wish it had SFEX2plus, Rival Schools or Tekken 3.

Any fighting games would be arcade ports and arcade ports require a CD to hold all the frames of sprite animations.

Doom 64 couldn't even have weapon reload animations for its weapons. Not enough space. And it had to cut like 4 enemies. Now imagine them trying to put Street Fighter Alpha 3 on a cart with it's like 40 characters and thousands of frames of sprites.

Those arcade games come on ROM boards.
Street Fighter Alpha 2's arcade ROM is about 28MB, entirely uncompressed.

N64 games could get quite a bit bigger than that. Look at something like Kirby 64, which uses a 32MB ROM, let alone Resident Evil 2 and its 64MB ROM.

>>8084481
nice

>>8090634
one of the major issues is that many of the better 3D fighting games had close ties to the PS1 hardware (Street Fighter EX, Tekken, Soul Edge, Bloody Roar all run on PS1 based arcade boards) or were made by a direct competitor (all of Sega's games)
