Milon's Secret Castle.

>> No.8080295

More like MILON'S SHITTY ASSHOLE

>> No.8080321

I'm going to have to correct you there. See, the correct pronunciation is "Milon"

>> No.8080327

Way too obtuse and confusing. You have to painfully scout out every block in the game and shoot bubbles at it and hope it leads you somewhere. The items don't explain their purposes, dead ends everywhere, and the bosses are all the same pattern.

Avoid Milon unless you like games that drop you in the middle of a huge maze with no hints about anything, and Legacy of the Wizard does it better.

I don't get why Euro mazeformers are such a meme on /vr/ when Japan was full of games like this that were exactly the same thing.

>and the bosses are all the same pattern

It's a CNROM game, there's no banking except to switch in different graphics sets. Games like this have very limited enemy AI.

Give 'em some more ROM and a more advanced mapper and we'll talk. This was from 1986 after all, NES games had not yet reached Sunsoft Batman level.

That's why it's called fucking Secret.

But if you don't like it, may I offer you a SNES sequel?
It's a charming platformer with no puzzles at all.

>Upon release in 1986, Famicom Tsūshin (Famitsu) magazine gave the original Famicom version a score of 29 out of 40.[7] The Wii Virtual Console version released in 2007 later received a negative reception. GameSpot's Frank Provo described the game as "easily one of the worst games ever made".[8] Provo criticized the control scheme, saying Milon "runs like his feet are greased, and his jumps are easily interrupted by nearby blocks that are adjacent or directly above him".[8] Provo awarded Milon's Secret Castle a "terrible" score of 2.0/10.[8]

They do it all the time. Modern video game journalism is the most pointless thing in existence.

like come on, they were just figuring out how to make something more complicated than Dig Dug and they had incredibly crude programming tools and had to code everything in assembly language on a tight schedule.

No, you need a resource for propagating word of mouth around which classic games are worth playing and for what audience. There's clearly a market for it. And this thread is the perfect example. Why are we talking about Milon's Secret Castle? Because it's a noteworthy part of video game history? Because there's a trend of appreciation for cryptic secrets platformers? No, because AVGN made a video about "how bad it is", but it was really just about making entertainment that he thought would get a laugh. And, sure, that's not a bad thing, shedding some light into forgotten corners of gaming. But it's not serving the role of a critic.

The problem isn't the concept is stupid, the problem is that game reviewers have always been awful, petty, and shameless and it looks like they always will be.

Please, look at the first post.

>>8080603
Delusional. Not even in the top 70, probably not even in the top 100. Hudson put it on Wii VC because Hudson had other content worth putting on the VC and there was no reason not to.

>> No.8081164

>>8081149
According to /vr/, Japanese games are all perfect masterfully made works of art and only those damn Euro Amiga coders would be so incompetent as to have a game where jumps get caught on blocks.

>> No.8081189

Nobody ever said that particularly from smaller studios like Hudson who didn't have Konami's bucks.

>> No.8081198

>>8081189
Konami had lots of games with shoddy programming. Actually HAL were some of the tightest NES coders due to Iwata being Japan's foremost 6502 coder.

>> No.8081214

yeah the programming in MSC is questionable. I will give Hudson a pass for the earlyness of this game.

>> No.8081461

It's very ambitious for a game from 1986. Not that obtuse by the standards of the time, either. You can find plenty of other NES games that are way more miserable about making you repeat the same areas over and over trying to find some mandatory "secret".
The problem is that it's not fun. They lock you in small areas of the castle so that you don't have to cover too much ground looking for stuff, but that means you don't get to enjoy the freedom of exploration. The bubble is incredibly boring and the other items aren't that much better.
Something like Legacy of the Wizard is a million times more cryptic and meandering but at least it's fun to wander through.

F THIS GAME

my brother and I rented this from blockbuster as kids
Literally no f'ing clue how to go far in the game
Also the fact that nintendo power released a guide for the 1st level is appalling
yes now with guides its so damn obvious but travel abck to the 80's and 90's where not many other people you knew had copies

yes well 86 was the year the NES matured and developers were expanding outside the tiny box of those early NROM titles. this was the year that brought LOZ, Castlevania, Dragon Quest 1, and Metroid.

zelda, dq1 and metroid are just as obtuse as milon if not more. it's just more enjoyable to stumble around in those games.
simon's quest too if we're talking castlevania

>> No.8081781

>>8081461
Another issue is that it's too damn hard. Past the first few rooms it's hard to explore properly because you keep getting hit and dying Most other exploration-centric games like this give you a lot more breathing room to actually DO aid exploration.

No they aren't. Except Simon's Quest maybe.

It's more enjoyable AND it's easier to discover what to do next.
