It was really not used at all on the SNES which is why the N64 controller nixed it. Hell even during the NES era, sure some games used it and for those games it was important but for most games it had no use except navigating menus which was a hassle since the d-pad was a better alternative.

select and start as literal select and start buttons were moronic even on the NES. No reason why you couldn't just do the same shit with up and down on the dpad an A. They've always been better served as menu buttons which is why they came to serve as menu buttons over time.

On the top of my head, i remember that early NES games use it for the opening screen.
You use start to start a game, and select to select another option on the start menu, such as 2 player game modes.
After that you used Start to enter the ingame menu, and select to move between sub menues.

As for more modern implementation?
Start/select go to ingame/system menu, and vise versa.

Yeah I think a decent number of NES games used it because there were so few buttons on that controller in the first place. The Atari 2600 had a "select" button on the console itself, which would often be used to cycle and choose various game modes modes before starting the game. A game iike Combat, for example, there was no menu or anything. When you turned the game on it went immediately to attract mode, and you could tell by the graphics on the screen which game you'd selected to play (normal, biplanes, etc.)

I suspect the idea was to move those controls from the console to the controller. But of course it became clear fairly quickly that a "select" button was redundant when you had on-screen menus and cursors you could manipulate with the d-pad.

I think the most recent game I know of to make good use of the select button is Final Fantasy Tactics (which is still a 5th gen game). It works kind of like a "help" key and depending on the context either immediately calls up a relevant help box, or switches to a help mode where you can move the cursor around the screen picking UI elements you want help on.

On the NES, it was usually pointless. Start pauses, Select also pauses but differently.
Sidenote: Fuck games where you hit Select to navigate the main menu. How did anyone think that was better than up and down on the D-Pad?
When you got to the late 90s and everything had RPG elements, it became more useful. Start opens a basic Save/Quit menu, Select opened your inventory or objectives screen. By like the PS3 you had so many gay menus to sift through that they just assigned different "tabs" to each.
Even PS4/PS5 games replicate that, they just have to use the touch pad instead because of nu Sony's abysmal hardware design
