Zoomer here, was this game always known for being the creepy scary "dark atmosphere" entry in the Zelda series, or was this because of by the creepypasta?

Because really it isn't that "dark", there are Mario games which are "darker".

Majora's mask is a thematically dark Zelda game, especially compared to everything that came before it. Anyone who cites that damn creepypasta in regards to how creepy this game's perception is are telling on themselves: That's why THEY think the game is creepy.
