Which is the best of the two? Or is it 3? Also should someone new to the series play 1 or 2?

I remember playing 1 back in the day. The atmosphere was great but I'm not sure if its just nostalgia goggles.

Diablo 1 looks cool until you realize you can't fucking run, also the voices are so tinny it's almost unbearable. Throw in the fact that it has about 1/100th as much content as D2 and is inferior by every other objective measure... yeah, D2 is the better game.

I'd say D1 arguably had the better gameplay and obviously better art and atmosphere.

Depends on what you want really. D1 is much more a rouge-lite, with limited drops, random quests, and a much harder difficulty in general. Playthrough are more unique because what you find and encounter really shape the game.

I love D2 too but runs feel samey because you mostly sprint past the huge amount of empty content to key quest areas.

I think AI and running had a huge effect. D1s grid system makes the game all about positioning, especially when monsters can move faster than you and lock you in, or run away faster than you can walk like succubi. Manipulation of the AI is a huge part of playing well. D1 did a great job of making the AI better as you got deeper into the Labyrinth. Dungeon monsters are slow and awkward walking, skeletons pause, zombies are slow, fallen run away. By hell monsters are charging you from off screen, running away from you to lure you into other mobs, and generally quicker.

D2 enemies by contrast are very samey because even a level 1 character can outrun them due to the way all the AI is incapable of firing on the move. It has to stop to target you.

D2 missiles are faster but this takes out dodging as part of the game. Levels of succubi and councilors in D1 play like bullet hell.

In general, I find D2 enemies much more samey, just blobbing on you, and running away is normally an option, Arcane Sanctuary and Maggot Lair being places you can't.

So the skill ceiling is higher in D1. D2 is all about gear and builds and there is way more replayability and combinations. That gives it a longer shelf life, although I feel like Hell difficulty had the problem of making many builds unviable without elite gear. The curve of difficulty makes it to that there is a pretty fine line between stomping everything and only being in danger against bugged Gloams and bosses, or being totally unable to progress. D1 by contrast, how you play matters more.

D2 is too big and empty and act 3 blows, although I like the different climate ideas. D1 is way better as single player. D2 multiplayer is a blast though.

1 is just much slower paced than any game inspired by it. But it's good and has some interesting design that sets it apart from later games as well. Little things like being able to equip a +magic item to learn a spell, then removing the item and still being able to cast the spell. Shrines can permanently mess with your stats and spell levels which makes them a lot scarier.
I had a cool interaction yesterday where I walked into a room too fast and got surrounded, accidentally got my retreat blocked, panicked and ran into another room before realizing there would be more enemies in there. I was out of healing items so I tried to town portal but fumbled it and accidentally used a scroll of phasing I forgot was in my belt, which put me behind a wall and saved my life.
That sort of shit doesn't happen in other games.

But I played 2 a lot more, in part because I wasn't online for Diablo 1. They're both extremely good.

You don't see everything in a single playthrough. You should do one with each of the classes.

>> No.8079596

For the single player experience, I think the original outshines the sequel. For me, it's a case where less is more. The structure is more definite, which is conducive to a certain type of play. Every class can use every spell and can every combat style. The key difference being how effective you will be with it. D2 classes are more restrictive in that there are a ton of great spells and abilities, but only certain classes get to use them. I like that my warrior can cast the same spell as my mage, albeit it will likely be of a lower level and he won't be able to cast as many. Classes are more versatile compared to the second. I can accept limitations of game design, but it sucks to have those available options further reduced.

Playing more of The Hell 2, and still having a lot of fun. I was expecting it to be even harder than Belzebub based on what some were implying, but so far it's been the smoothest D1 experience in my life. Enchantments really carry you and allow you to make incremental progress, and my xp gain from items is so high that even at level 26 I can still make some gains on the first floor when farming for potions.

Is there any tutorials or tools out for modding DevilutionX yet?

>> No.8085965

>>8084587
Hell 2 is not a bad mod but there are a few design choices that really kill the fun of it.
>summoners casting cooldown
Feels artificial and boring, it would be so much more fun to play a summoner if, for example, they just had reduced spell effectiveness. Or if the Beastmaster could do melee, anything to make them interesting beyond standing far away and having slightly different minions.
>crossbows instead of bows for warrior
Any class that uses warrior model uses painfully slow crossbows with the tradeoff being higher damage. It doesn't play good though, feels awful to use and visually doesn't make sense because all crossbows are represented by regular bows.
>29 classes but play each one only the way I wanted
All of the stat points, perks, gear, and somehow there is still no freedom or variety in how you play your class. Why does there need to be 4 gladiator variants for example, if the difference is that one uses an axe and the other uses sword and shield.
I played alot of this mod but eventually found it frustrating that no matter which class I choose I can only do one thing the entire time.

>> No.8086137

>>8085965
Yeah, he overdid it with the class specialization. Also had the problem of difficulty fluctuating wildly based on how a level rolls.

Lot of cool stuff too, but I find it getting grindy around the caves. Making most items trash and then selling for nothing also sucks. It means you either save scum or just leave 90+% of items on the ground.

>> No.8086161

>>8086137
I like that you can tone down or ramp up the difficulty, and the inclusion of iron & even a version of iron where you can save each floor. But yeah the difficulty spikes are jarring.
I wish there were more good D1 mods, as people have already said here D2 is great but the game is more of a slot machine with extra steps. Mods for D2 are typically awful since they just streamline the game into ridiculous numbers like D3 shit. The spells also just get out of hand. Imagine a game like Diablo with monster and area variety like D2.

>> No.8086390

>>8086161
>Imagine a game like Diablo with monster and area variety like D2

Don't know why it's never been made. I think D2 had some great ideas with synergistic party skills that make a party greater than the sum of its parts. Also, curses are a great way to expand gameplay, working with monster AI instead of just damage.

But such a game could keep the grid lay out and slow movement while in combat to keep the gameplay more tactical and less about loot. Throwing in some of the enviornmental effects of D3, letting you kill monsters with traps, and making traps a bigger danger, would also fit with D1 style play.

Unfortunately the genre always tried to copy D2.

Act 5 in D2 also made me think an ARPG featuring huge battlefields and tons of allied and opposing AI bots could be a blast. Think Act 5 but way more allied and maybe a way to call in catapult or spell assistance. Not at all like D1, but could be a fun sort of chaos.

>> No.8086408

>>8086390
I guess Warcraft 3 sort of did the latter with strong heros and then leading unite around them. But I was thinking the focus is more on your character and the game would be a mix of coop dungeon crawls, big battles, and upgrading both your character and your cohort of 5-30 minions.

>> No.8086458

>>8086390
>Throwing in some of the enviornmental effects of D3, letting you kill monsters with traps,
You could do that in Diablo 1. If you paid attention you could see holes in the wall where arrows would come from and activate the trap to have it hit a monster.
Easiest as a Rogue since she'd automatically identify traps.

>> No.8086570

>>8086390
This is the Diablo sequel I've always wanted. Keep the grid, the slow movement. D2 has really cool traps, but they have zero consequence.
>The spike tiles in arcane sanctuary
>The floor tiles that shoot darts in tombs
Cool concepts but they do zero damage.
Auras, curses and enchant are all cool additions to the spell roster.
The things I dislike the most about Diablo 2 are the things everybody else says are essential.
>Running, frozen orb, runewords
Just leads to flying past most of the content, the content that you do experience is just rolling over with screen wiping skills, and then you discard anything and rarely identify the items.
