any suggestions?

Tales of Phantasia (you'll need a patch for, as it's not in English on either the SNES or Playstation).
Tales of Destiny (somewhat clunky)
Tales of Eternia (probably the most refined out of the three, called Tales of Destiny II in the US).

All have up to four player co-op with real time combat.
