And for non-Nintendo Japanese games:
>...

Why does Japan suck so much at preservation? There was free version control software since the 1990s.

It seems like Japanese version of preservation is something along the lines of "I know that a fellow Japanese person owns this rare thing, and not some filthy gaijin who would wish to share it with the world, so I am satisfied. Oh, and the owner posted a photo of it on his twitter, even though said collector is entirely incompetent despite being respected in his field, is easily tricked by fakes, and knows nothing about even basic digital backup??? UOOOOOOOHH~~! I'm not worthy, Collector-sama! Show me more potato photos of your Famicom games~!" Maybe it is some weird form of a collectivist society, where simply knowing a fellow countryman is "protecting" it is good enough, like having a painting in a museum?
That said, there are indeed Japanese gamers who support actual preservation.

Nintendo is a bit of a special case though.
Basically a lot of Nintendo console R&D got outsourced after the N64 to a company that has had many names over the years but is typically known as BroadOn (now owned by Acer). In addition to doing hardware development this company was also responsible for all of Nintendo online infrastructure.
And I mean all of it. NoJ Websites, online game servers and even internal file servers used for source code and other business data.

True, to a point. Japanese culture in general is more conservative when it comes to stuff such as honor and working within the circle. Also, tipping a waiter is usually looked down upon over their.

If you like something, worry about preserving it, and hear/read the phrase "japanese people are preserving it", then understand as "no one's doing it, fix it ASAP".

It puts me at ease that the rest of the world (even other easterners) as preserving retro games, so we can all have a network of preservation that will keep going on and maintaining these games alive. Yeah, sometimes a fag will come in and seethe about piracy (of decades old games), but leave them be and keep preserving.

Not that anon, but your bullshit argument doesn't make any logical sense. Preserving software is far different from anything physical, and if you outright ignore that, then you don't have an argument worth listening to. So go be a faggot elsewhere.

The open-source benefit of game code is very limited; it's far too purpose built. A boon to the modding and hacking communities, sure, but a general public good? That's a stretch.

"Preservation" of something that was never meant to be in the public domain is a completely different thing than legitimate archival. By demanding the former, you undermine the latter.

I don't pester people to dump things, in fact I'm completely in the camp of if you want something preserved, do it yourself. That said, just as aggravating/mystifyingly braindead as the beta kiddies who whine and send death threats to people to dump things (that they'll never play, even if they had the ROM) are the Japanese equivalent who sit around jerking off Japanese ecelebs over their collections while whining about gaijin dumping games and desecrating the sanctity of Japanese game developers.
>>8071592
My sincerest apologies to the grassroots groups of Japanese game preservationists whose definition of preservation is more than acquiring a physical artifact and posting photos of it running on a Retro Freak before tossing it into a drawer before trading it off to another like-minded collector. At least that Japanese game preservation society (run in part by a guy from France, amusingly enough) does repair and meaningfully preserve things. And hey, if people want to shit all over western collectors/hoarders, I don't see why the Japanese should be exempt just because they are lesser known to the betakiddies.

It's not. But Japanese honor code means you need to gift someone in return if they give you something, and being a waiter is considered honor enough without needing a gift in addition. So you don't tip, because then you're expecting hte waiter to give you something back like special services.
