Looking to pick up in the next year or 2 an emulation machine my kids and I can play old games on. What's a good option out there that's relatively simple to start up whilst also something an old hand like myself can fiddle under the hood with? Is pic related a top runner? Also, how is the Gamesir controller, never heard of it.

Just buy them a switch like a normal parent, don't do the shitty tiger electronics-tier thing we had to deal with in the 90s.

I mean I could potentially do both. I sorta look at it like A: older games teach some good/different lessons and B: loads more games vs <60 a pop for a switch game.

You can get a month of switch online for $4, or a year for $35, and it lets you play a bunch of NES and SNES games. This way you've got something your kids are guaranteed to love and enjoy, and you're using that same device to bond with them playing both older and newer games together rather than buying some awful chink shitbox and trying to force it on them.

I got one of these a year ago for £200. It got so buggy within 3 months it was unplayable. Been meaning to fix it but I was so pissed off I haven't been bothered

I have 3 boys, 5 4 and 2. They play on a Raspberry Pi 4, running Retropie. It runs up to Dreamcast at respectable speeds. They love it, and it's super simple to use, the 4 year old started using it on his own when he was 3. I'd recommend looking into it.

N64 is hit & miss on most systems and in fact I don't even bother with n64 simply because of the awkward controller. You can look up performance metrics of N64 using Retropie on the Pi4., I think EtaPrime did a good video on it.

PS1 is absolutely fine, a lot of old arcade games work great, Neo Geo stuff, Amiga, Genesis/Megadrive and SNES, I'm pretty sure you can run DosBox on it. It's all-round a great system. Then you can turn it into some low powered house server when the kids are bored of it.

This for sure. And don't do that because it's a teachable moment, you'll just wind up being the new Bean Dad.

If you want an option besides the Switch, the Xbox Series S/X can sideload apps and it has a lot of really rad emulators. If you really need that old school feel, get a couple fightpads, those have nice D-pads and plenty of face buttons.

I think if you do that, your kids will like, love you forever, since you'll have gotten them the thing no one can find, and shown them some cool bonus functionality to lord over the other kids at school.

They are free to like it. Partially, as I said previously, older games impart different and useful lessons that newer games don't even struggling with mario for a day or wandering around zelda for an afternoon is a novel experience.

Also, it goes without saying a lot of new shit is gay and pozzed.

That doesn't happen when you have a functionally unlimited library of games. It only works when you have a couple of games and are forced to make the most with what you have. You're also crazy out of touch if you think your kids are going to go for those games by themselves when other, insanely more stimulating options are available.
>Also, it goes without saying a lot of new shit is gay and pozzed
Vidya isn't even the tiniest fraction as pozzed as the education system and television. When you let the TV parent your kids, this is what they're watching: https://www.instagram.com/p/CSEl-QmlkCX

See >>8076543 would you have preferred playing genesis and snes games coop with your dad, or some garbage boomer shit like pac man or pong? We both know the answer to that. The game shouldn't matter for you, it's the experience of bonding with your kids, so play the best shit available with them and they'll have a blast and appreciate the time they're spending with you.

Wii/U with homebrew is great. I bought my wii with the homebrew and all the emulators already added because it was being sold cheaper than an un-modded one without any controllers etc.

Been having a blast with that trying out games that are way out of my price range for SNES/Genesis and even 32X stuff.
And it even seems to run Ps1 stuff well. Tried out Twisted Metal 2, Megaman X8, Gex, and Castlevania and all played perfectly.

You're assuming I'm giving them an unlimited. Library. As far as more stimulating options-- part of parenting is directing energies into more useful enterprises. Yes, it's a push and pull and not everything is a victory. But that doesnt mean you give up.

I'm quite aware. But that's a completely separate battle.

Whilst just the bond is 90% of the memory the art itself is also of signifigance. What your saying is an equivalent to what difference does it make if you go to the MET, which (at least used to) celebrate quality culture, or the MOMA, which does not. Simply put, the latest and flashiest isnt always best. not that it has to be either or. I only asked for recommendations on how to make an emu machine. I haven't played consoles in years.
