Please list some Japanese classic PC Games that are in English or are playable without knowledge of Japanese. And if you can, please share a short review or whether you recommend the game or not. Thank you. Please try to share games that you enjoyed playing and that you recommend.

Genghis Khan II (DOS): Excellent game. Like ROTK but with more emphasis in tactical battles. Samurai and Mongols are the best units. Unfortunately, the English version has the romance mini-game taken out; in the Japanese version, you gain concubines after conquering nations, and you have to give them gifts, sweet talk them, etc and if you play your cards right you can sex them and have children. Not joking.

ROTK3: This is the ROTK that I would recommend over the others. For no other reason than it's the one I played in my youth. I never managed to beat it though. I would appreciate some tips.

Princess Maker 2: There's an excellent thread on this very forum. Highly recommended.

Legend of Cao Cao: This is a Fire Emblem type tactical game that is based off of the ROTK novel. Please google it and you can download a fan-translated English version. Pretty good game.

I'll post some more as I remember them. In the meantime check out Legend of Cao Cao

You could put pretty much all of Koei's old games into here:
Nobunaga's Ambition: The grand-grandaddy of modern day grand strategy games. Manage your provinces economy, keep your rice harvest up, train your army and kill every other warlord in Japan. It's one of Koei's harder games. Has a sequel for DOS that plays more like ROTK.

Uncharted Waters: It's the Age of Discovery. Take your ship and make some riches. Lots of options here: exploration, trading, combat, etc. Has a sequel, New Horizons, that has many improvements over the first.

L'Empereur: You're Napoleon. Conquer the enemies of France in the name of the Republic. Unlike Nobunaga's Ambition or Romance of the Three Kingdoms, you only control Napoleon, so it plays in many ways like an RPG/turn based strategy hybrid. There's a hidden Hundred Days scenario if you want a real challenge.

Gemfire: Koei strategy in a fantasy world. It seems like Koei had a very intricate Game of Thrones style story planned out for this game but it's not entirely clear during gameplay. More simple than their other strategy games, but it still has a charm all its own.

>I would appreciate some tips for ROTK3.
Early on concentrate on hiring good officers, drafting/training troops, and expanding a bit.
Later on, invest in development. Give away food. It raises support which means more gold, which in turn is used to draft more troops or further develop your cities.

Play as Cao Cao. He has/gets the best officers.

Power Dolls is a great game. It got published in English by Megatech Software, who also translated and published Dragon Knight 4 as Knights of Xentar (which is a decent old style jrpg with hentai), Cobra Mission (also with hentai, point and click adventures aren't really my thing so I can't really praise or damn it) and Metal & Lace, which is a shitty fighting game.

Falcom put some English PC versions of a couple of their games on the web.
Vantage Master is a pretty cool fantasy tactical combat game:

Lord Monarch is a real time strategy game, I haven't played it a lot but it looks cute:

I always wanted to get into the Koei games, but I always get really bored with them / don't understand what to do (in battles especially).

The Legend of Cao Cao sounds pretty cool though, I love Fire Emblem.

Xentar was Dragon knight 3, not 4.

I bought it new off the shelf in the mid-90s from a videogame store in the mall (before gamestop type companies took over the malls).

I still have the lewd mousepad it came with.

Although it says NR 13, it was hastily censored. (They still leave in content like bondage, strap ons, etc, but hid nipples on screen).

In the box was a slip with a 1-800 number that you call to order the 3.5" disc to unlock the 18+ content. You pay shipping and handling and they mail you that disc.

Oops, my bad.

I got mine mail ordered from Megatech, it didn't even have a box: just the disks and an instruction sheet in a flat mailer.

Damn, I still have that mouse pad as well.
That and the mouse pad for the special edition of TES: Arena.

How DOES one learn how to properly play RotTK? They seem cool but are really obtuse

>> No.812128

Your best bet is probably to start with ROTK 11. It's for PC in English, and has a tutorial. The interface is closer to more modern strategy games so it's easier to pick up. Of course, it's a 2008 game and isn't really /vr/.

As for the older entries, ROTK4 is probably the easiest to pick up. Reading the manual or looking up a FAQ is a big help, but once you get the hang of how to recruit officers, hire troops, and conquer a city if becomes second nature. Each iteration in the series has (occasionally vastly) different mechanics, though, so strategies that worked in one game often won't work as well in the next. Luckily the bare basics usually remain the same and it only takes a short while to pick it up after a quick playthrough.

How many PC-98 games are actually translated/available in English, anyway?

Not much sadly.

No one gives a shit about translating any of these games on obscure Japanese retro PCs, unfortunately. Real shame, as that machine is just a goldmine of games waiting to be played.

Maybe we'll see some progress when these guys finally run out of Super Famicom RPGs to translate.

>> No.817258

>>816908
It doesn't help that there's a major lack of good documentation to help anyone who wants to translate/hack any of those games. Just dealing with the Japanese text encoding pre-Shift JIS on some of these older games is a real pain.
