SNK may no longer be around in its original form, and they don't produce games for it anymore but still manages to rake in the dough.

Not only are they visually appealing, they're fun as hell.

Too bad nice 2D artwork is hard to come by in games these days. 3D is so much cheaper.

I find a lot of screens at PC98.org and Tokugawa's screenschot project (http://fullmotionvideo.free.fr/screen/about.html).). The games themselves? I know that Yahoo Japan auctions and emulation's your best bet.

Stay away from the adventure games for now. Most of them likely have production value inversely proportional to their quality as games.

that's Power Slave, right? That intro was amazing but then when the game started it was just talking to silhouttes of large breasted anime babes, no relation at all to those images.

by the by, do people who play these old Japanese PC-98 etc visual novel.adventure games read Japanese? Because I can't see how you would enjoy them otherwise. Not even like TT. A-Train's sort of its own thing, a mixture of SimCity-ish stuff with transport games. Funny thing is, the original A-Train game came well out before SimCity; I guess the developers got influenced by some of the stuff Maxis was doing come A-Train III.

This is one of the best threads to ever grace /vr/. Even though I never played almost any of these games I still feel nostalgic seeing the pics. I guess because a lot of the art style is similar to late 80s anime, and I remember waking up at like 6AM Saturday morning to watch stuff like Venus Wars and Iria on the Sci-Fi Channel back in the mid-90s. It's a shame pixel art is dying in favor of everything going HD CGI. A lot of good stuff could still be done with it.

Yeah, it has Transport Tycoon elements as your trains will be a good income source, but the time goes on an hour per hour basis. There is some city planning too, as your stations will allow roads to develop from them and increase land value around them. Plus you can erect various buildings that will earn money and there is even a stock-market.
I spent countless hour on A-Train (the third one), and I'm still impressed by how they managed to do day/dusk/night/dawn and season cycles using only 16-color palettes.

*Oh and while I'm at if you want to play the game again google the Link (4chan thinks it is spam).

Some secrets/tips:
When taking a power-up there are 3 to choose from that circle together in a ring: Shooting Upgrade, Shield, Bombs
If you fly into the center of the ring and keep your ship center with the ring it will start spinning very fast until you obtain all of them at once. Not only does this give more than just the one power-up you would normally be allowed to snatch but the Bonus Points to get are key to reaching the Score milestone for Extra Lives.

At the Stage 1 Twin-Boss do not shoot either of the Ships but fly around them until they charge their Mega Homing Blasts then lure the Shots as they are fire at each other. The Bosses will 1-Hit KO each other and you will get extra points for your tally than if you beat them yourself.

Go into the configuration menu and hold up until the menu changes.
This secret menu allows you to select levels to start on for practice (Use Continue Not Start after you select one).
The Muteki Option allows you to toggle invincibility, which is good to memorize attack patterns and practice dodging (you still hear a sound when your ship's hitbox collides with something).
The Accho Option allows you to toggle the Loop Conditions (As you progress up the loops like in Gradius when an enemy ship explodes it releases additional bullets for you dodge).
Boss Rush Option toggles does what you think it does.

Finally in the level select option, each # corresponds to that ordered Stage.
If you set it to F, then again use continue (Not Start) you receive a Secret Boss Rush Mode where each Boss had radically different and much harder attacks patterns plus this Secret Boss who's on the level of the Final Boss.

Like I said this is my Desert Island Game, I have an unhealthy obsession with it.

I think you are misunderstanding him. He was talking about navigating menus, things like "file", "save", "HP", which are apparently mostly recent loanwords from English that you can decipher just by learning katakana, the alphabet they use for writing foreign words. The story and dialogue will still be Japanese, though.

As for why they don't use Roman letters, I'd guess it's because the underlying structure of the writing systems is different, we have consonants and vowels, they write whole syllables, and having to switch back and forth mid-sentence is a pain in the arse. That and tradition.

The FM Towns stuff looks weird, in a groovy, funky way. Is it just because of the 1x2 blocks they use for stippling? Is that because of the machine(I could see it saving memory) or was it just some company's house style? Colour palettes seem to trend brighter, too.

Looks like the color bit-depth isn't very high so they had to make do with the stippling shading techniques for the age.

But as this picture illustrates, it isn't the size of your color palette, it's how you use it.

I know, but I'm saying the FM Towns stuff is stippled differently. In your pic the pattern is generally:

OoOoOoO
oOoOoOo
OoOoOoO
oOoOoOo
OoOoOoO

Which is fairly standard. Cosmic Psycho, for example uses patterns like this:

OoOoOoO
OoOoOoO
oOoOoOo
oOoOoOo
OoOoOoO
OoOoOoO

As you see in the pic here: >>819290

That's a pretty distinctive difference in how it's stippled, I was wondering why those games are stippled differently.

We should probably be saying dithered, but most of these look like a human deliberately chose to put each pixel down like that, whereas dithering is the computer algorithm thing that often results in muddy pictures, so stippling feels more right. Ah, well.

This might be related to image compression. When I was trying to develop my own lossy image compression format in the early 2000s one technique I came up with that reduced image size by 50% while producing a better-looking picture than straight up halfing the vertical resolution would was the removal of odd-numbered pixels from even lines and even-numbered pixels from odd lines. The result looked rather agreeable on a low-res CRTs.
