Which do you think is better, /vr/?

For me, it's Yoshi's Island. One of my favorite games of all time.

Definitely Yoshi's Island. Better visuals, music and gameplay. World has a bigger map with more to explore, and it represents 2D Mario at its most refined, but Yoshi's Island is still the better game.

World.
dem secrets. Heard about them all word of mouth back in the day. Star Road, that glitch that screws up the colors on chocolate island, all the different alternate pathways you had to figure out how to unlock.

Yoshi's Island had far superior music, but I hated that baby, even if you were technically invincible to enemies blows because of it. Island felt easy in comparison to world

>> No.804516

I liked Mario World better since the levels were a bit deeper with more non-linear paths and it was more about traditional run and jump platforming whereas Yoshi's Island was too much about playing kick-the-can.

I played Yoshi's Island ages ago on my SNES, the copy was borrowed and the dude wanted it back. It was such a good game, better than World.

I had to pry the nostalgia goggles off my face with seemingly super-human force, but after I did so, I came to the conclusion that Yoshi's Island is better(never played it as a kid).

I really hated Yoshi's island. SMW was classic mario that was more polished.

Yoshi's island was like a predecessor to Yoshi's sotry, and I didn't care too much for that either. The game was just very easy. Normally people try and offer the rebuttal that even if it's easy, it took a long time to get 100%. But when getting 100% just consists of putting in a ton of effort and has absolutely no difficulty, I don't see what there is to love.

>> No.805280

Super Mario World didn't suck dick like Yoshi's Island did, so Super Mario World.

SMB3 is the best Mario game though.

>> No.805302

Yoshi's island is pure shit. It just felt tedious to complete the bosses were stupid, the enemies are stupid, the atmosphere is stupid. There is also no challenge to it like the special world in SMW

Am I the only person who sort of has this love hate relationship with Yoshi's Island? Mostly hate?

It might be because I finished the Game Boy version, and didn't play the SNES version, but I just feel that Yoshi's Island is a pretty bad platformer that is designed to be hard and annoying to play.

I'm not saying it's a bad game though, but I just don't understand why people like it, the gameplay is very frustrating, Yoshi can only attack by using eggs, which are supplied by enemies. If he gets hit Mario fucks off to the top of the screen and you can't get him back in time most of the time because he either goes way to far, or you get hit and Yoshi spins in a circle for 3 seconds wasting time. Also, those white dandelion things. Fuck those, they're deliberately put in platforming stages to put you off. Oh, and even though this may make me seem like a casual but I felt that there were not enough Checkpoints half of the time

I did like the music and artstyle though, and I liked the idea of all the Yoshi's being kind souls working together to bring Mario back to his brother. The bosses were creative too, and fun to fight most of the time.

Really, sometimes I have reasons to hate the game, and sometimes have reasons to love the game, I can't be the only one...?

I prefer World. While YI had interesting graphics/enemies, I didn't think it did anything World didn't. I'm, also, not a fan of having to chase a Baby Mario whenever I get hit.

>> No.805541

>People saying SMW is harder when they both have the same amount of difficult stages (1- Tubular for SMW, Poochy Isn't Stupid for YI)

Not that either are difficult, mind you.

For me, YI is the better game if just because I like the level design and feel of it more. Plus, I guess I like exploration a little more than straight platforming, same way that I like Sonic 3 more with Tails instead of Sonic.

World's castle theme is probably the best Mario song ever, though.

I don't know how to elaborate difficulty because every player is different but none of the mario games seem remotely hard when you master the controls. Yoshi's island seems at least more challenging due to the non linearity of some of the levels and the levels you mentioned, I died more on the snow level then I ever did in super mario world.

I just don't understand the flack this game gets in particular for being "easy" .

I never played SMW2 growing up either. I could never get into it as an adult, but World, even without the nostalgia goggles, is an amazing action/adventure platformer. Yoshi's Island just isn't a "real" mario game to me.

>> No.808121

I never enjoyed Yoshi's Island. It just felt like there was always something holding you back, specifically having to carry around baby Mario. That was just extremely tedious and disappointing, and easily put the game to the bottom of my list. It was more repetitive than enjoyable, and was overall just dull gameplay. The colors were interesting, but that was about the only thing about the game worth noting. Not only that, but the game was easy, what with the required invincibility you carry around with you.

If I had to answer OP's question, it would be Super Mario World 2 by a landslide.

Keep going back to Super Mario World. Barely touched Yoshi's Island since I completed it.
As for the shortcut, that is a bit challenging if you do it with certain criteria.
1) Only 1 life.
2) 1/2 hour time limit from "Peach is missing again", to watching the ending.
3) Follow this route. No switch palace.
Do 1st island levels 2, 3 and 4, plus the castle. Do Donut Island 1, hidden exit. Do the water level in the lake, hidden exit, do Donut Secret House, defeat the ghost to get to Star Road. Clear Star Road hidden exits to get to Bowser's Castle. Beat Bowser. Total levels 12.
Only ever succeeded doing this a handful of times- usually from falling down a hole with rushing.
This was explained in a magazine years ago, but with the Yellow Switch Palace thrown in because (and I quote) "it would make clearing the levels nearly impossible without it".

It's one of the creepiest, most nerve cracking tune I've ever heard in a videogame.

However, Yoshis Island stomps the SMW soundtrack hard otherwise. Especially the boss tunes. And not just Bowser, but that piranha plant tune too.

I usually complete the game this way, then go back and try to get 100% afterwards. Only level that really gives me trouble is that damn hidden exit on the bridge to get to star road. Fly under the first exit then land on the platform behind it. Usually takes me several attempts, and much swearing.

No switch palaces, no deaths, took me 28 minutes (I went and took a piss right before Bowser's Castle haha).

After running through that, it sounds harder than it really is.

Must say the Special Worlds without dying sounds like a painful challenge. Well, I tried out Yoshi's Island on an emulator and I really like it, despite having played SMW before. SMW is just really weird and depressing to me, and I can't really explain why. It feels really hollow, like it's obviously a video game. It's super compact, and it's really easy to beat 100%, so it gives me a kind of bad taste in my mouth. It's still a great game, though.
