Where did you all get your roms at in the late '90s/early '00s? I remember swapping floppy discs and data CDrs with nerds at school but I don't remember where I initially got my roms from besides p2p.
I remember Emuparadise and coolrom around 2002 or so.

They had a little blurb about tile editors and they said something like "you can use it to give princess peach big boobs!" but then they removed that part a year or two later.

Didn't get my ROMS from here, but got literally everything else, because they were the definitive and most complete and up to date emulation + hacking tools + all other adjacent stuff-site on the internets.

The people that actually hang out on the forums there (and a lot are still there to this day it seems) are fucking skeezy, though, and knowingly harbor sex offenders in their ranks. I remember one thread where one of the mods was telling everyone he got busted for CP, and everybody else was like "oh man that sucks, well se still love you!" and "yeah they got me too a year ago" etc. Pretty sure some of their oldest members are probably even fucking dead of old age by now...

They still have this, though, and it's probably the only thing the site is still good for:

Can't remember any specific ones I just used whatever sites popped up in search results when using search engines like Yahoo and Alta Vista in the pre Google days. Then in the early 2000's once I got broadband I used stuff like Kazaa and Limewire to download Dreamcast games thanks to the consoles ability to play them unmodded from CD-R's.

Can't remember his handle now but there was a guy who made pretty popular custom maps for C&C: Tiberian Sun and some mods for Nox.
Kept them all on a tidy personal website, and if some some reason you clicked the header image it linked you to a secret trove of roms on his server.

Probably coolrom or emuparadise or some shit in the mid 2000s. CD Romance is my favourite recent romsite by far. They have so many cool pre-patched ISOs and roms of translated JPN games. Vimms Lair has everything I need but it's so fucking slow, much like Archive.org.

Emuparadise was legit wayyy before that, I'm sorry you missed out. The only thing that sucked is they had a bandwidth limiter for IPs, so downloading multiple ISOs at a time was a no-no.

Is this the oldest running website for roms? Everyone I knew used it too. Like OP, I also would put them in floppy disks and later on in a 512MB flash drive.

Late 90's there were tons of small sites that only hosted a handful of roms. You would go to different pages and find unique roms. The only site that I ever remembered the name of was Romulus and Remus.

In the mid-late 80's I imagined an evolution of teletext where every game could be loaded onto your TV. That would become reality ~10 years later.

lol oh man I completely forgot about that, getting the little express mail box stuffed full of CDs

As for console ROMs, back in the Nesticle days I somehow got a link to some Chinese site that itself hosted a ton of plaintext links (so they were URLs but not wrapped in href so you had to manually copy and paste) that periodically updated and would take you to FTP and/or HTTP directory listings (like in the pic) that had a bunch of stuff (porn, warez, roms) on it.
I archived like all of that stuff on CDRs and like ~10 years ago while moving thought 'eh I don't need these anymore' and tossed them out. Fucking idiot, I still beat myself up over it. The ROMs aren't important (I'm sure the collection I have now is much more complete), but I'd have loved to have all the ancillary stuff (saved web pages, images, etc.) that I'm sure were on there.

I bought like some CDs with roms and emulators on them. Like Nesticle, ZSnes and Neorage. And Gencyst. I made copies of that and desu used it until I discovered RomHustler and better emulators. Those old school emulators are super comfy though. The CDs were like $10 each or something. For me at the time it was well worth it. I wouldn’t have had access to that stuff otherwise as I didn’t have internet
