My framemeister honestly seems to give much cleaner signal. Retro tink is super noisy

>> No.8039901

If you got a PS2 and some component cables lying around, you can connect it to your HD TV via HDMI and have it upscale the image up to 1080p-1440p. Basically if you want to make the image look generally better than plugging it directly into the TV, you'd want an upscaler like this, the OSSC or the GBS Control. It won't look "great" by modern standards, but it'll look generally better.

The reason the RetroTINK is noisier than the Framemeister is because the 'TINK is designed to jump between resolution changes without losing signal (ex: Most PS1 and PS2 games with gameplay at 240p but menus in 480i like the Resident Evil games, Final Fantasies, Chrono Cross, etc). If you pop into the menu in Resident Evil then back out or vise-versa, the Framemeister will lose the signal, the RetroTINK will not.

N64 via S-video on the 5X looks fine, idk what this dude is talking about with salvaging the signal. Funnily enough N64 outputs a very good composite signal, it's just too bad that the system itself makes everything inherently fuzzy.

>> No.8041552

>>8039683
I'm surprised people don't talk much about how this thing has use cases for CRTs also. Not just for VGA monitors but also RGB monitors with 240p downscale. The main problem is just knowing what mess of other adapters you need for whichever use case.

>> No.8041602

>>8040343
If you have a modded N64 that supports RGB output I guess? Mine isn't modded though and I personally dont think that alone would justify the cost of owning a Retrotink 5X. If you're that desperate to make your N64 look nicer on an HD TV or if you want to stream/record gameplay footage from it, get a RAD2X cable or a Retrotink Mini with some good S-video cables, the smoothing filter would be all you really need to make it look "Less bad" or closer to presentable.
Keep in mind the N64 and PS2 won't really look spectacular on HD TVs or monitors though, especially since emulation really impact how people think those games really looked..

>> No.8042143

Question about the 5X, my current 1080p flat screen I got around 7 years ago has component cable inputs that I use for my Wii and it looks pretty decent. If I eventually get a 4K tv which obviously won’t have those inputs, will the Wii still look just as good running it through the 5X into the HDMI using those component cables?

If it's anything like the GBS-C or OSSC, it should be about the same or slightly better, since it not only allows for passthrough but I think the Retrotink can upscale 480p up to 1440p.

it might as well be. modern 2016+ tv's no longer support anything below 720p and will try to upscale it (and fail). My tv cant even play snes and genesis only works in black & white with no sound.

retrotink cleans up the signal so modern TV's can read it. and for only $69-$199, depending on the model you buy, verses framemeister which is like $600 right now because its discontinued while the try to make a new model.

Oh damn I didn’t think this thread was still up. I got mine in the mail today and it certainly makes the PS2 and Wii look playable in 720p but if I try playing it in 1080p or above it makes a super loud distortion/crackling noise and the picture cuts out. I’m using component cables and my tv is 1080p(I bought it 6 or 7 years ago), is there some easy fix to this I’m missing? I’m assuming maybe I need to upgrade to a 4K tv. It draws more power than the 2x. I just got mine in today, and my new TV I just bought powers it off USB just fine. But the bedroom TV USB doesn't supply the juice for it. Maybe try a dedicated or better USB power brick. If that's not it, your TV is probably shit.

Also update the firmware.

The 2x Pro isn't a scaler, it's a multiplier. And no, compared to the GBC-C and RT5X, the resolution switching is bad. It's not awful, but it's not Silent Hill, Chrono Cross, or Die Hard Arcade material.

it's not magic, just one of the first devices to offer it at that pricepoint thanks to needed fpga becoming affordable (before the current shortage, at least)

I finally got the 1080p working on my tv without the noise issues. It turns out I just had to plug the power cord into a different source. Previously I had it plugged into a power strip with lots of other things plugged in so I guess it wasn’t getting enough juice to output 1080p.
