I've only ever played two NES games to completion, Super Mario Bros. and Mega Man 2. Which other NES games are worth playing to completion at this point in time?

I've beaten Megaman 2, 4 and 5 (because those are the only ones I've owned), Shadowgate, Super Mario Bros. 1, 2 and 3, Chip & Dale's Rescue Rangers, Donkey Kong 1&2 and Bugs Bunny's Crazy Castle. I got stuck on the Clinger Winger in Battletoads. I've played Kirby's Adventure, the other Megaman games and Final Fantasy 1, but I don't consider it legitimate because it was on an emulator.

All of them are officially translated. Search Earthbound Zero/Earthbound Beginnings and Dragon Warrior 1-4. Also there is a translated Famicom ROM of Dragon Quest 1, it's the same as Dragon Warrior but has passwords instead of save files, google Dragon Quest 1 Polinym.
I'm not into JRPGs but even I liked all of these games. Personally I like them more than Final Fantasy. If you don't want to invest that much time just play Dragon Quest 4, it's the NES/FC JRPG pinnacle, the greatest

That's a cool list. It's got some primitive old games in it here and there (like Ice Climber and Excitebike), as well as some controversial ones (like Simon's Quest and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1) - not everybody will enjoy these. So if you start playing random ones and become discouraged because they don't resonate with you, then make sure that you don't give up on the whole list! Just try something else. Also don't give up on a series because an early game isn't fun for you. I don't really like Double Dragon, for instance. And Zelda 1 and 2 are vastly different. Capcom was doing its "find a good formula and milk it forever" thing even back then, so Mega Man games are pretty similar, but other companies were not.

Another few good-but-seriously-flawed ones I'd throw in are Phantom Fighter and The Guardian Legend. I also have a thing for Iron Tank.

I think all three Wizards & Warriors games are good, though they're also weird and arguably janky. The third one is the weirdest by far and the most controversial, but also the most interesting (I claim).

Among space shooters: If you let in Famicom-only games then you should certainly include Gradius II and probably also Recca.

I enjoyed playing Solstice to completion. There's nothing else quite like that on this console.

If you're into Koei war games then you should include one I think. I had fun with Genghis Khan. But there are several others - Nobunaga's Ambition, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Gemfire... I haven't played any of those though. Some have sequels on the NES. Koei just pumped those things out (and still does I guess?).

You probably shouldn't just thoughtlessly throw in all the games I mentioned, but anyway some of the above should be tried.

Castlevania - play this one, a NES classic
Castlevania II - their first attempt at a metroidvania but they didn't get it right until they tried again with Symphony of the Night. Most of the challenge comes from finding items, platforming and enemies, especially the bosses, is a joke
Castlevania III - goes back to CV1 style, be aware that a lot of changes were made for the Amerishart localization. The music is a lot better in the famicom version due to more memory or something. The game was changed to make it MoRe HarD but in doing so they gimped the extra characters and made them useless.

I like it but it's one of the more questionable suggestions here. It has optional two-player co-op where one person is a bird (if you're alone you control both man and bird at once), which is cool. It's fairly good-ish. It isn't super polished though.

Anybody interested in Castlevania should try it, if only for the music (which you hear the majority of within the first playing session), and keep at it without cheating until becoming too bored/frustrated to continue. In the latter case, I recommend either giving up or cheating, as appropriate. Also you can start with a romhack that redoes the translation to English I guess - I don't know about that because I haven't tried it myself, but it's probably okay to do and might help. Or not. But anyway it's worth trying, as long as the player goes into it knowing that it might be awesome, that it might be unfinishable crap, and that moving on to Castlevania III is mandatory either way.
