I like the original more. Mario is cuter. His eyes seem more full of life. There's something sterile about the updated model.

The new graphics do make it look really nice on a flat screen, it makes you want to play through to see everything. The original is better it want to play it, with the new one you eventually get glitches so you can't continue.
I couldn't defeat the first bowser because after the first hit he couldn't be hit anymore.
All the mods cause different gliches such as with the camera. It does play real nice at 60 fps and it does seem like the best version at times but the hardware is a few hundred thousand times more powerful so that's expected.
Still it is really cool to try, I expected worse.

Why. Mario 64's promo shots were rendered with raytracing but they don't use anything that can't be done with raster graphics.

All the new engines feel so lifeless.
Probably because they're too realistic. I prefer my shadows backed in and my illumination limited to the object, not bouncing off walls, characters and atmosphere.

The main issue really is that the CG renders with Mario 64 had raytracing but it wasn't accurate and isn't what you see with ray tracing today. There is basically no global illumination, soft shadows or bounce lighting involved with the early ray tracing in the CG renders. See the Digital Foundry video portion where they tweak the RT mod to mirror this look.

https://youtu.be/ChqP2ecA8qE?t=344

I personally think that aesthetic fits the game more from a timeperiod accuracy viewpoint, even if the technical accuracy of the visuals are more inaccurate.

Because clickbait. You don't need to buy a 1500$ GPU for it, especially in the current trying times, but "Whoa i spent 40,000$ on Mario you wouldnt belive what happens next!!!" attracts the views.

This thread is stupid. /vr/ used to love prerender threads and be like "the 90s promo prerenders have so much SOUL" "When are games going to look like this??" Then when a mod is made to look completely identical to the prerenders yall come out of the woodwork screeching "LE SOULESS !!". Granted OP's pic is just one zoomed in screenshot but this is exactly what some of you all wanted all along. I guess soul is just a /v/ buzzword after all.

Yeah SM64 Ray Tracing doesnt quite work at least yet. The pic you posted and the video seem to have the Render 96 models but no texture packs. Render 96 mod with the restored textures is really good imo

I'm not impressed until modders go all the way with trying to recreate the Silicon Graphics renders that Nintendo did. I'm pretty sure this model was done by Render96 right? it seems their minds are made up on making higher quality source textures, which is just not the right way to go in my opinion.
They should rebuild all the environments from scratch to reflect how they would have looked if done through that same method with SGI workstations.

>> No.8017750

The issue Render96 is gonna run into is that SM64's environments were designed with the Nintendo 64 in mind, not an SGI workstation, and you can't change these environments without changing how the game plays. Even if they did go through with that, many of SM64's levels don't have a corresponding SGI render and would require a ton of artistic liberty.

The menu for the game was an actual interface for an SGI workstation, but yeah i get what you're saying. Still the fact that someone even got all that running on the engine in a webm posted earlier leads me believe that SGI Mario 64 might actually be possible. It would probably require some experienced programmers to make it achievable though, by rewriting the engine code.
I couldn't imagine why anyone with real experience and talent would want to waste their time modding Nintendo games anyway, especially knowing they have the most garbage fanboys out there with their anti modding stance.

Fucking love Render 96. Those renders were always something special to me. They do kinda clash with the background a bit but I can look past it. Got really blue balled because I played with the Odyssey moveset ( sans cappy throw ) without knowing about the ending change and the retarded crystal stars thing.

>Then when a mod is made to look completely identical to the prerenders
The character model for Mario objectively looks better and most in here are just assblasted nintoddlers. I mean you're dealing with a fanbase that is very much on the spectrum here, when they made a soul/soulless image of Mario 64 vs DS because Nintendo changed a marbled block. Apparently the marbled block was more 'interesting' than a brick block.
But in terms of it looking like the prerenders, it's only doing that in character models, they basically need to remake new levels for it to ever get there. I've seen some good amateur renders with the right idea though.

>> No.8017943

>>8017669
The promo prerenders are better than modern "Perfect Mario" that now all modern Mario games emulate to a T. We didn't know what we had until it was gone, and that was models of Mario that were better because of limitation. Once it all becomes carbon copies, what fun is it?

If you like the SGI look I'd recommend emulating the Peach's Castle Gamecube tech demo. It feels like that thing was made right around that time where they wanted to keep that style going and it oozes soul. Too bad there's not much to do besides walk around and change settings.

I’ve always liked polygonal Mario, he’s cute

>> No.8018973

I'm probably in the minority here, but I never liked the SGI renders of Mario 64, not even back in the day. For reason, all that strong shadows and realistic textures doesn't suit Mario at all, except maybe just in a few places. Even the pyramid desert render looks way worse than the final one, in my opinion.

Now, Donkey Kong Country is another thing. As the final game used the original renders but downgraded, it kind of works better recreating those games with the SGI look.
