[ERROR] No.8014367 [Reply] [Original]

Is there any way to achieve similar disk space savings for storing a full set of roms; similar to what is achieved through fitgirls repacks. If I could save Some full collections and optimize my disk that would be extremely useful. Right now I just have zips and 7z and rar. But is there anything that could take those and further compress?

>>8014367
Just buy an additional HDD, they're cheap as fuck and old games don't require an SSD to run well anyway.

>> No.8014383

>>8014367
If you aren't serious about it, use chdman for disk based consoles. If you are serious about it, set up a separate NAS box for data hoarding.

>> No.8014386

Roms aren't large enough to warrant compression. Stop downloading full sets like an autist and just keep the games that are worth playing, faggot.

if you have enough games that this would even be a problem in the first place, you should probably get a life.

fitgirl website has some crypto miner embedded somewhere. cpu usage goes way up when you're browsing that shit

Look into the CHD format for your disc-based games. It is lossless compression and will reduce your collection size significantly.

As for cartridge games, it really isn't necessary. You can store a ROM of every cart ever made in a very affordable amount of space.

>> No.8014424

>>8014367
there isn't much point -- there are ways to get better compression, but emulators tend to only like zip/7z/rar directly (in descending order of support, too), and you'll probably only gain 5% better compression if you're lucky with some other format
just buy another disk or delete the shovelware

>>8014386
in the era of cheap disk and high speed internet, there really isn't any reason to not just download fullsets
it's not even like they're that large -- even shit like a full PS1 collection (all regions) is only like 2.5TB

>> No.8014430

>>8014423
It's not exactly lossless, since decompressing a CHD doesn't return a 1:1 copy of the original with a matching hash. From a practical perspective that doesn't mean much to the end user, but it's something to note if you're in it for archival purposes.

Cartridge systems compress with 7zip
CD systems and Dreamcast convert to CHD
PS2 convert to CSO or GZIP
PSP convert to CSO
GameCube and Wii convert to RVZ

Just found this out today. I was wondering why the sha-1 of a chd I decompressed into bin cue didn't match the redump sha-1.

>> No.8014465

>>8014430
>>8014437
I believe this is because uncompressing a CHD combines all the CD tracks into a single .bin file. I tried extracting the individual CD tracks from the .bin file with a tool like CDmage and they passed a Redump hash check.

There are ways but only a retarded poorfag would use them for archiving. Just flip burgers for a day and afford another HDD. The only legit reason would be to shrink files in a way they can still be used by an ODE that uses an SD.

The reason I ask tho is fitgirl released a mame pack and it reduces the file size pretty significantly but I just have no idea what they are doing that is better than traditional zip rar etc

For reference

This is significant space savings. If I could apply to Xbox, ps2, ps3, PS4 games for archiving purposes that would be super helpful.

I realize older romsets you might not think are worthwhile but I have multiple sets bc I don’t know which to keep. So I have tosec or no intro and other full sets which I don’t want to cut loose in case it turns out they were the better to keep

Is this an oversight? I wanted to 'undo' compression because I was trying to patch a mod and it inevitably kept failing. I ended up re-downloading the game (Mega Man X4 USA, undub mod)

Saving, yes. But every time you want to 'take a game out', you have to unpack and that takes hours. Have a look at fitgirl's FAQ, they might give a better glimpse into the compression techniques.

i'm assuming you mean for .isos since cartridge games are tiny, dolphin has an in-built compression feature for gamecube isos that saves a lot of space, ps2 games can be turned into .csos, there's something similar for xbox games but i haven't tried it

They'll be removing stuff to get it down to that size like mechanical games, fruit machines etc and games that use CHD files.

Here's a video of a guy reducing a Mame rom set down to 11GB by removing all that sort of stuff

That’s the thing nothing is removed. At least from
The 70gb base. The 11gb is what it compresses down to. I have the 2tb+ mame, Chd etc but all uncompressed which is nice on the live drives but for archiving offline I would love to compress it further either for online cloud storage or for an offline drive.

>>8015276
Like I am gonna waste time sorting out the most accurate dump on most occasions- sorry yeah, I hoarded and was lazy. Looking now to trim down to the best romsets and ongoing be using those.

Between stuff like Tosec and redump and no intro what are the best?

finally tracked down a drm free copy, been playing for a few hours, really fun little game, like underground 2 on a much smaller budget with a bit more midnight club-esque handling, have to wonder how much better it would have been if they'd spent the money they paid the women on the actual game
also more ricer racers need anime vinyls, it's a travesty there aren't any in UG1/2

Mame chds are the exception to always download full sets. Most of that is space is taken up by autistic uncompressed laserdisc images for games that aren't currently playable in mame and probably never will be. Sort by file size and look up those 10GB games. Likely made in 1983 and listed in mame as not-working.

They haven't made HDDs that small in ages and you can literally buy a larger SSD for the price of a romantic dinner for two at the golden arches, which is what you can make in 2 hours working there in the lowest minimum wage states. It was publicly announced as a way to fund them and it's extremely easy to disable. In fact, if you're not using some shit ass browser, it should had already be deactivated by default.
>>8015142
Personally, I didn't notice any difference in performance/seeking and that was on an old ass hard disk. Gzip with a -9 setting was on par with chd, sometimes even better when it comes to size. I'm not autistic enough to go for -11

No. Fitgirl uses a pic from a 2001 film called Amelie. No one knows if Fitgirl is actually female even though "she" says so. Could be yet another tranny cunt for all we know.

>> No.8016661

I've considered making patches for ZFS that allow me to use compression like ECM, so the files appear as ISO but are stored as ECM. Among the other common formats for various consoles / datasets.
I'm not sure if all of them would be viable for on the fly use though. But even if not it'd still be better to keep them in a compressed volume and just pull ones out for use by copying them to an uncompressed volume. This way they at least show up in search indexes and could even be used in things like file sharing programs without having too many duplicates or different checksums.

Too bad I'm too lazy to spend time on it. It would be nice to have the benefits of raw use with the benefits of compressed data though. And deduplication as well.
I might end up doing it with a different file system that might make this more practical.
