I really love the way the BFG works, even though that's because of hardware limitations instead of deliberate design. The two big factors with the BFG are timing and positioning, due to the way its tracers work and the delay it has when you fire it. I'll probably be here all fucking day trying to work out something which is different, but still has a similar level of depth to it.

It's not much, but I made a weapon I'm really happy with. It's a hypno ray. If you kill an enemy with it, it'll become your ally. I also made it so the player can walk through hypnotised enemies. It does need some more work, like a special effect indicating which enemies are hypnotised. I also can't work out what I want to do with the altfire. Should I make it so you can direct hypnotised enemies to walk to particular areas? Maybe it should make a hypnotised enemy stand still on hit? Or maybe it could store a hypnotised enemy and deploy it later?

Also, anyone know a decent program for converting shit into webms? I'm tired of using a shitty website.

Open the .map file in notepad++ and jump to line 37516, note the location of one of its vertices, then jump to that vertex in Trenchbroom.
Or just recall the most complex object in the map and cut it in half. Only time ive seen that error was when i made a high-poly-by-1996-game-standards sphere.

Can any of you script wizards tell me how to make Doom Tournament's Flak Cannon to NOT PENETRATE every single enemy in its path?
I know for a fact that original UT's Flak doesen't.
I'm, trying to tweak and rebalance the mod since the dps/damage values are all sorts of wack, like Rocketlauncher dealing 1/3 of the DPS original Doom's RL (122 vs 360) does no matter the mode, Marisa's way of balancing things is a bit bizzare to me

Basically, if you aren't having fun because you're dying so much, there's nothing stopping you from using saves. Doom is a game, you're meant to enjoy it. If you aren't saving mid-combat then it isn't save scumming, its using an actual feature of the game the devs recommended people use.
Pistol start, no saving isn't the "right" way to play, its just a challenge you can do if you want.

Using saves is the only way to play maps like these and there's no point pretending otherwise. I mean you could grind out UV pistolstarts on your first blind run I guess, but I don't see what that would achieve besides wasting your own time, because a lot of the traps/ambushes are essentially puzzles that have a fixed solution.

The point of this stuff is replayability, once you are familiar with the maps you can start trying for a no death run, then pistol starts, and so on. Trying to do it without saves on your first run would be like a rock climber doing a no-harness free climb on a rockface they never climbed before.

It's kinda Doom 1's fault yeah, it set the false expectation that UV is the "real" way to play Doom and any other difficulty gives you a watered down experience- Because in Doom 1, that is kinda true.

I personally don't see a problem with people doing pistol starts on a blind playthrough. Unless otherwise specified, maps are typically balanced so that pistol starts are doable. Some mapsets even encourage pistol starts, as carryovers can reduce the intended challenge.
Blind Saveless playthroughs are a meme, however. Saveless runs are fine for when you have already gotten familiar with the map and know what to expect. But in Blind runs, it is bound to lead into more frustration than actual fun, especially when delving into much larger maps. Decino learned this the hardway with his Blind playthrough of BTSX E2 UV+.

There hasn't been lot of those wads this year. I could see Heartland, Arrival and Doom 2 in Spain Only receiving awards. My take on this is that many people see "killing monsters" as main content of Doom, and UV always has the most monsters, thus it is the "most complete experience".
By that logic if you didn't play in UV you didn't finish the wad in its entirety and there's still content you were not allowed to see if you played on lower difficulty.
And thus they force themselves to play UV then cry about how the wad didn't allow them to see the entirety of its content because they were filtered by difficulty.

Another hot take: original Doom 1/2 and many many other wads are never meant to be pistol-start-every-level. If it was otherwise, then the game wouldve forced pistolstart on you. Pistol start and the hardships involved with it are a punishment for dying (and it's on author to take it into accound, and some times they just don't), and unless authors explicitly state otherwise, players should treat it as such.

For anyone else enjoying playing against bots in UT99, I put together a map pack of high quality maps, 14 DM and 2 DOM. These maps in particular are medium to large in size because those are the ones most fun to play with bots. I included one small map (DM-Obsessive), but I think it plays well enough for 6 players. I also included two DOM variants of the DM maps. One of the DM maps (DM-Frantic) also has a DOM variant, but I think it's not very well done so I left it out.

Most maps here are from authors who have also made official UT maps (after they were recognized for their unofficial maps for Unreal) or have other unofficial maps that have been endorsed by CliffyB ("Ownage" maps).

Fast weapon switch is still possible but you have to use the unused offset parameters. It works pretty well but not as well as it does in Decorate, for example if you switch while shooting your weapon will freeze for a frame or two after lowering.

Adding an ultra-hard difficulty level is actually bad, because it only serves to trigger FOMO and leaves players feeling psychologically unsatisfied. One of the reasons Souls is so successful is it just has the one fairly tough, but not at all impossible difficulty level. People feel like they're sharing an experience when they beat the game. To people who are really good at sound, art, and animations for your mods.... how do you do it? One of my biggest roadblocks I run into is taking egregious amounts of time working on sprites or animating them (even before rotations) and deciding they suck after spending like a month on em.

Sounds I feel like my biggest issue is trying to find things that sound decent both with shitty desktop speakers and with headphones: It feels like the middleground tends to be "volume and weight" which tends to lead to balancing issues. Trailblazer is a good example of this, everything sounds GREAT but holy fuck is it louder than all other ingame sounds by a fuckton.

I'm sure it's mostly me getting caught up in my own bullshit when most people would be completely fine with the end result, but dammit, I've fallen short of the feedback mark too much to not be hypercritical of myself lately.

i love the "puzzle" aspect of doom combat; the fact that the enemy AI is very "discrete" and limited means you not only get very distinctly different combat due to map layout and monster combinations, but moreover you can really apply strategy and thinking to do better.

on the other hand, my execution is quite low (maybe because i am old).

so i play hard maps, but usually with saves. soemtimes i find one i really like i grind it now and then to uv max it. i enjoy this process but it is distinct from my "playing through with saves to experience the whole wad"; here i'm enjoying the combat, and really enjoying playing the map multiple times and feeling an improvement in skill. i don't upload demos anywhere or stream, i do this for myself.

I disliked DSPOPAIN the most. It's too common to be replaced with something so different-sounding. The whip part has a tone similar to a gunshot and the yell part is even louder than the respective death scream. It messes with taking audio cues of what's happening around and just gets jarringly repetitive to listen to. Can't think of a way to fix it other than just removing it.

For the rest, maybe at least go through them side by side with Doom originals and tune the volumes to match if necessary.

In general the more commonly appearing a sound (or any asset) is, the better a solely cosmetic replacement for it should fit the position. As the new ones are more extensive than what Mozzarella originally made they automatically warrant some more care in that regard.

Decided to get Duke on my main machine so I can get it running 144hz, I played it a few times and then when I tried to boot up the eDuke launcher again, it told me it couldn't find the path (all the grp shit was in the eDuke folder which was on my desktop) and it didn't boot.
That's one thing and I would've been fine with that but then it fucking REMOVED the launcher. It doesn't seem to be hidden and it's not in the recycling bin. I have to redownload it every time. I'm so goddamn mad. Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be here?

Okay, I made Project Malice compatible with DoomRLA by giving every attack a DamageType that's one of the four main ones recognized by DoomRLA armours (Melee, Bullet, Fire, Plasma).
Fire is a bit overrepresented though, because there's quite a few acid/blood spitting attacks and it was the one that fit them best. Also a bunch of attacks that I couldn't quite grasp if they were supposed to be plasma or fire so in the end it's a bit color coded:
>If it's green, purpleish or blue it's plasma
>If it's red, orange/yellow or looks like a fireball it's generally fire (there are a couple of red projectiles that are obviously plasma bolts)
In Vanilla it's very obvious what kind of monster does what kind of damage, while here there are monsters with more than one attack and more than one kind of damage so that further complicates things.
WARNING: I also increased the speed of several projectiles (generally the ones that don't home on you) to match vanilla fastmonsters levels.

I wrote a civilized non-attacking answer to the post, that insisted that we should shun doomworld. My answer was the development doomer boards, so it would become a bigger rival and coexist in healthy rivalry with doomworld. I did not agree with shunning as i said, it is the place for many non-political mappers who do not wish to take sides, and do not deserve to get shitted on as they bring worth good content and participate in keeping doom alive. The post that insisted shunning was not removed, mine was.

I find it hypocritical, that mod or mods on this board force you to take sides in this petty forum wars and censor the ideas that are not aggressive and attacking as it their personal preference and bad for us all fan of custom content. It's what dw mods already do, and apparently ours want to become their mirror image. Is the /vr/'s answer for forum totalitarism in dw, an even worse totalitarism here? Doomer boards does not practice this, and neither should /vr/. If you start removing post, then you remove all political/forum war posts, not just the "too pacifist" ones.

You can remove this message too, but what message will you sent to everyone else here. That they should accept full totalitarism, and get wrong opinions censored?
