Small, cheap, piss easy to set up, works on most any commonly found TV, base controller is good NES stand-in, classic pad is good SNES/PS1 stand-in, GC pad is good N64 stand-in, almost all controllers are wireless.

It beats just about every other emulation device in most every category except compatibility, as PC still runs more systems overall, but even with that said, the Wii is still a killer emulation device.

Most likely it has to do with the ease of doing it. Pretty much. Wii is the cheapest solution to getting emulated games on a CRT. Plus it's got a huge variety of controllers and adapters from all over the place. It's also currently the only way to play lightgun games with an actual lightgun on any screen you want.

>> No.801137

Personally I stumbled on a decent wii arcade stick for $5 and wanted to experiment with some games, so that's my excuse.

But again it's mostly because it's piss easy to do, impossible to fuck up, and costs next to nothing aside from any storage devices you might need. Wii also seemed to be a regrettable purchase for a lot of people too, but softmodding it makes it incredibly versatile. You could use a computer to emulate, yeah, but some people aren't into that.

It's mostly because the Wii was the first console to have officially sanctioned emulation of a huge number of systems which naturally piqued the interest of people. Also because of this we get things like SNES and Genesis controller adapters for the system, which makes it even better for that.

What im saying is:
PS2 era, most people had a PS2
you can obviously play PS1, C64, MAME, Amiga, NoeGeo, NeoGeo pocket, GB, GBC, NES, SNES, all sega consoles before Saturn
almost no one used PS2 to emulate games.
Why?

Is not about what console is best to emulae games...
you can emulate a lot of consoles on Wii, and a lot of people do it.
they could even before on PS2, yet no one did

in other words...2001/2002, you can emulate a lot of games on your PS2, no one does it.
2006, you can do THE EXACT SAME THING YOU COLD ALREADY DO BEFORE; ths time on the Wii, everyone do it.

Because people who used consoles to emulate before used either a Dreamcast or Xbox because PS2 is incredibly weak. Nintendo sold Wii to a lot of people who otherwise wouldn't even buy a console and indirectly created a huge installed base of homebrew users after homebrew became super easy to run, which is why you hear about more people using Wii for emulators instead of other consoles.

>> No.801219

The emulators that are on Wii are extremely mature in most cases, because they were able to simply port stuff over from Gamecube and take advantage of new features and extra horsepower. So you basically are getting PC-style platform consistency on a $99 box that runs everything.

Also it doesn't hurt that Nintendo was putting out emulators that
a) are possible to inject roms into (still the best option for Neo Geo emulation) and
b) serve as a proof of concept that development of homebrew versions of these emulators is worthwhile

Dreamcast was also pretty popular as an emulation box towards the end of its life cycle, simply because it became VERY cheap as sega slashed the price to try and clear the remaining units and was a fairly powerful piece of kit by the standards of the time. I remember using mine as a ps1 emulator almost as much as i did to play its own games.

Oh, and if you are using a 3rd party classic controller and you notice very slow response and stuttering you can try these modded emulator builds

Controller adapters for Gamecube should work fine, there is no reason why they should introduce latency, don't know about Wii adapters but third party stuff is kinda iffy. A while back I asked about emulating on my cube, and people recommended to get a Wii instead since it wouldn't be much more expensive than a cardreader and action replay for the cube.
Turns out the cheapest Wii's I can get around here still cost €60 or more, and that's for just a wii without even any controllers.

So, my cardreader is on the way from China, it was only €2 or €3, should arrive in 2~3 weeks.
The action replay is another story though.
If I'd just were to buy it, is this the one I need?

And if not, would it be possible to just use a generic memory card, and burn an iso of the action replay disk to a mini dvd?

Thanks in advance!

The PS2 scene sites were an awful mess and I barely managed to navigate through them to get my PAL console softmodded. My ex took that when we split and I have yet to find a way to get McBoot running on my jap slim. I've got a PS3 for emulation now but it still would be nice to get some use out of the old console for muh CRT gaming.

It's easy as fuck to install the necessary files. All you need is a SD card. If any issues arise during installation, try a different SD card.
