And they were only awkward to use on the Controller S where they go moved too far down away from the other face buttons. The Duke placement is totally fine, they should have replicated that and added bumpers to the 360 controller as well. More buttons is better, it simply allows more functions and options, and if your game doesn't need them then don't use them, no big deal.

Start and Select are their own thing, they don't exist in the space where you rest your thumb. The term "face buttons" didn't exist until shoulder buttons were introduced, to distinguish between the buttons under your thumb and the buttons under your index fingers. Before that they were all just buttons.

You're telling me. I got it for use on a PC and tried to work around it with every remapper known to man, but nothing. why's it a necessity? why not just use shoulder buttons. The point of the 4 face buttons is that you don't need to lift your thumb to reach some two outer black and white buttons, as with your thumb in the middle all four are available to you. This is why the Gamecube controller was designed the way it was, and put the button you're most likely to use in the middle.

Don't think it would make a difference - the black and white buttons are hardwired to input the same command as the bumpers. Changing any of their bindings changes the bindings for the bumpers as well.

I actually find Genesis 6-button controllers more awkward because of the size of the buttons. The Xbox buttons are smaller and closer together so it makes pressing all of them easier. But I also have big enough hands that I don't find the Duke awkward to use at all.
