I like how they used the minifigure overworld models in some of the cutscenes.

I'm surprised this was liked at a time where everything was being pushed to look more realistic and impressive

>at a time where everything was being pushed to look more realistic and impressive
That has always been the case.

More when 3D graphics were considered the new shiny standard and anything still in 2D was considered backwards and outdated

>> No.7999269

The game was overall really impressive, the fights animations esp the summons and limits, the beautiful backgrounds, the 3D world map, the CGs, it was considered as one of the nicest looking game on the PS1. But that very aspect of blocky lego-ish models was quite critized. I guess the rest of the game made up for it.

>and anything still in 2D was considered backwards and outdated
That's just not true.

it was true for Sony of America and many US gaming mags

It is true. Nintendo made a conscious decision not to have any sprite-based 2D games on the N64.

I couldn't give less of a fuck about nintendo, and FF7 isn't a nintendo game. The claim was that, and I quote, "anything still in 2D was considered backwards and outdated".

Do I need to go through all of the great 2D games released in 1997 that received excellent critical acclaim?

>> No.7999302

>>7999294
Point is the big devs of the time were pushing 3D over 2D. That’s a fact.

>> No.7999307

>>7999302
No, the point was that, and I quote once more "anything still in 2D was considered backwards and outdated", and this is immediately debunked by looking at the many 2D games released in 97 and after that were incredible mainstream hits.

You misspoke, there's no need to keep digging that hole.

>> No.7999316

>>7999307
Big players like the aforementioned Nintendo literally did consider 2D games outdated.

>> No.7999320

>>7999316
Again, you said, and I quote for a third time "anything still in 2D was considered backwards and outdated". This is patently false when we look at the games released that year, and how well they were received by the gaming press and the public.

Why do you have such a difficult time sticking to your original argument without desperately attempting to move the goalposts? Answer this question, or don't respond.

Legit the mini figure models are why I love how this game looks. It adds an unintentional cutesy charm to it. And yet I say unintentionally but its clear they wanted to have a distinct style for the mini figure models. The concept art for them is Super SOUL.

Fuck the tards that think the models in this game look ugly.

A lot of those positive reviews always had to say something "proof 2D is not dead", "it may look old, but" and such, showing there was already a popular opinion they were pushing back on

>> No.7999334

Despite the popular consensus of the time that 2D had become outmoded, critics also highly praised the game's graphics for their smooth animation, impressive effects, and evocation of atmosphere.[55][57][62][64][69] John Ricciardi of Electronic Gaming Monthly wrote that "everything is animated with an amazing attention to detail, and the special effects used throughout provide an atmosphere that just begs to be experienced."[57] However, there were a few detractors of the use of 2D. Entertainment Weekly said that the visuals were dated and flat, when compared to Nightmare Creatures which featured 3D environments,[70] while IGN commented, "The graphics are initially similar-looking to SNES and Genesis incarnations of the game, the character animation isn't particularly smooth and 3D is resigned to limited background effects and the odd special effect."[64]

Sure. I'll take this as your concession.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (1997)
Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee (1997)
Alundra (1997)
Fallout (1997)
Age of Empires (1997)
The Curse of Monkey Island (1997)

Arguing that "w-well nintendo didn't like 2d so the industry was against 2d" is like arguing that nintendo didn't like M rated games so the industry was against M rated games.

You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about and have been completely, embarrassingly, blown the fuck out.

Honest question: would it have been cheaper to make animated FMV cutscenes or pre-rendered CGI cutscenes at the time?

>> No.7999356

>>7999349
None of those were huge mainstream hits.

>> No.7999363

Due to the increased appeal of 3D graphics at the time of its release, Symphony of the Night initially sold poorly. However, it gradually gained sales through word-of-mouth and became a sleeper hit, developing a cult following and selling over 700,000 units in the United States and Japan.

A lot of those games are 2.5D and games like Fallout had a massive budget showing off realistic models based on stop motion sculptures, obviously pushing on impressive graphics

evidently there was a lot of contention between the art directors and producers whether to use chibi or realistic models, so we ended up getting a mix. i think it was because square's internal 3d modeling tools weren't capable enough to pull off more realistic looking 3d yet
