My dad came with a bunch of CD's in the early 00's and I remember playing something like this on his old laptop.

There was also a game where you build a tower like 3D tetris and if you grow it too large a hand comes from the sky and topples it over. Can't remember the name and all my searches have yielded no results.

Mediocre I'd say. But I couldn't and can't compare the game to others of this genre since this is the only sailing game I ever played. It also looks like that the original C64 version is the best one with the Amstrad one being the second best and Spectrum the worst. But this game you can't play without the manual, which back in the day I had to translate painstakingly via a dictionary, since at this time my english wasn't very good.

This also was the first game I bought myself, not counting playing the clones of western games on the east german KC84 or Polyplay arcade. That sailing game might be from 1987 but this one and a couple of other cheap budget games, like the one in this WebM (that came from a really shitty compilation tape with mostly games written in Basic), that I played during the early 90's before getting an Amiga 500.

Primal wasn't actually that bad, it had decent combat and puzzles. It's one of those games that show up on hidden gems lists simply because it released within a time that it got overshadowed by many other games and it wasn't as fleshed out as it's other contemporaries in the medium. Best way to describe it is a mixed between classic TR and Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver.

On that tape was
Turbo 64 - pretty decent racing game
Derby Day - written in basic and absolutely pointless
Pilot 64 - worst game of the pack, a pretty much unplayable flight simulator written in basic
Handicap Golf - decent but incredible slow golf game (I sped-up the video quite a bit)
World Cup - really bad soccer game

Galactic, or Galactic Xmas Remix on Amiga. Totally wild scrolling playfield shooter with a ton of depth and secrets to it.

Rumor has it it was intended to be an arcade game - the lone developer, Stavros Fasoulas, intended it to be his magnum opus, after having rocked the C64 scene on stuff like Delta, Sanxion and Armalyte. Publishers weren't interested despite a demo of the original version making it to magazine coverdisks and Fasoulas having star power in the European gaming press, so his magnum opus was released in full as an Xmas version, again on a magazine coverdisk.

Despite having festive resprites (the original protagonist was a king, lost in his dreams as toys battled over a game board) it's one of the best pure 'get as far as you can' score run games on the system. It has quirks that go unexplained (you have two lifebars for two different colours you can switch between by running into the other you, and your life drains, so careful switching/building up life for the other colour by killing stuff is key) but I fucking loved it and still do.

I find Carter and Minoko are also pretty valid combatants to do things like drop the turret with, and shoot up enemies that don't need Amber's crazy firepower wasting her energy. Carter is essentially disposable, the points where is unique trait applies are the most infrequent of all. Minoko is physically a smaller target than everyone else.

Andre's energy needs to be conserved because his special skill for repairing is the only one that uses energy, and places where you really need to rocket splash with Amber (enemy groups or hitting the backs of armored turrets) you'll have enough energy for.

The plus side of all this is that you can deploy secondary weapons with someone that HAS energy and then pick it up as someone that needs it, but it's slow to do this.

I've never once seen a reference to XS anywhere, or spoken to anyone who played it. No mentions of it on /v/ or /vr/ that I've seen, never saw it on lists of old PC games. I recall it being a bit shoddy. It had kinda rough 3D polygonal character models (more like animated piles of boxes to be honest), tried to bank on the rising popularity of FPS multiplayer and promised AI opponents that would learn from your behavior. It has its silly charm, though. The kind of game you picked up somewhere for 2 bucks.

You have no idea of how much shovelware has been dumped on to steam to be downloaded by a handful of people, played for 10 minutes, and deleted because it's garbage. Steam is a great distribution system, but it's also a graveyard for shitty indie games that nobody has ever played.

I've got probably 15 or 20 games in my steam library that have like 15 minutes of play time on them, shit I got free keys for or was part of some shitty game bundle.

I doubt there are any games on steam that LITERALLY nobody has ever played, but there are definitely games on it that you could say "nobody plays", relatively speaking.

Aztec Ball, also known as Shattera: Wheel of Time, is a physics based 3d Breakout-like game developed by literally who and published only digitally.
The developer actually got a site from which he sells it and some of his other games, and it's STILL MAINTAINED after all these years.
http://www.remaginarium.com/stronggames/
I think he's associated with Big Fish, although I doubt they have exclusive rights to restrict the distribution of his work.
In other words, he keeps things in obscurity out of his own volition.
The earliest known version comes from 2005 (https://web.archive.org/web/20051124074214/http://www.stronggames.com:80/)) so it can be qualified as /vr/.

Got it from my cousin, took me YEARS to be able to describe enough of the game to be able to find it again as an adult

>> No.8034885

Maybe you fellas can help. There's a game I played as a young child. You were in a cave/corridor that goes toward the right. Standard platformer view. You spent a stupid amount of time walking, every now and then you'd find a room to enter.

Sorry it's so vague, but it really was a very, very long time ago.

I contributed to this "gem" when I was freelancing at age 21. I was hired by Driver-Inter to do the intro and the cockpit overlays. I was on the project for seven weeks.

Criterion provided the engine and the development tools as far as I remember.

Why is the perspective on the top half of your cockpit tilted to the left, despite the rest being centre on?

I didn't design any of them. I was handed some sketches and did the "high resolution" models for the into and other artwork.

The Revenant Review bullshit

1) Ross does not apply a modern patch for a DX7 game, which is a sensible thing to do. He's reviewing old games for a long while, he SHOULD know that shit. Encounters plenty of obvious bugs that are all easily fixed by a patch, Complains about it incessantly, even makes a skit about it with the credits following a bugged purple-outline pattern from the game.

2) The games cornerstone and main attraction is its combat system that is fairly complex with blocks, dodges, combos and attack strings. Ross completely ignores tutorial, skips through dialog that sends him to learn about combat, does not go to a combat instructor in town, and thus his character is stuck with 3 basic attacks for the whole game.
There is a controls section in the menu that has rebindable "block, Dodge, Combo 1/2/3" etc. buttons in there which would clue any sane person that there is something more going on with combat. But not Ross.
Ross continues to basic-click through enemies, tanking all the damage, chugging all the potions, buying those potions by the hundreds, then complaining about how the game is totally unfair and he has no money to buy anything, all because he MISSED THE WHOLE CORE OF THE GAME.

3) Magic system is easy to understand - collect the gems, set them as shown in the scrolls you get (and almost can't miss), get the spell. Following a basic instruction is apparently "super confusing" to Ross.

4) Spends 10 minutes crying and whining about a fistfight boss, when the game literally tells him to cheat with magic and gives him Might and Fist Mastery spells right before the fight. HE EVEN SCROLLS PAST THEM WHEN HE TALKS ABOUT MAGIC. That means he HAD combined the runes and HAD ALREADY USED THEM at least once.

5) He shows on video, how he deliberately disabled the load-while-playing system in the game that makes area transitions seamless and enabled all the caching and re-caching options to the max, making the game completely reload every asset every time he reaches new area. Goes on to cry about loading times he inflicted upon himself.

6) Complains about locked FPS, and how unlocking it sets game into TURBO mode, ignoring that many, many old games have their speed tied to framerate. This will come up later. He already reviewed a few dozen old games at this point, so he should've known better.

And a lot, lot more.

When confronted about it, released an addendum video that basically says "Yeah, I missed that little part, but screw you i'm right"

Messiah review:
Lots of outright false things about game AI and stuff he cries about that are ENTIRELY on him being deliberately obtuse, as well as AI mishaps and difficulty (AI shooting and reacting extremely fast) that happen because HE DIDNT LIMIT THE FPS AGAIN.
Tested myself, limiting FPS to 60 eliminates almost all of the AI problems. It is written on the forums. It is a well known thing with old games. He had encountered it before. He didn't learn jack shit from the past.

Chosen review:
Used a very obviously low level weapon to demonstrate that beating a mid-level zombie took 20 hits, cried for 10 minutes about sponge enemies and difficulty. Deleted comments that called him out on BS.
I personally tried 3 different versions of the game (2 english versions and one original Polish), didn't have an issue in any of them.

After all this, I just can't be sure that whatever he bashes the game I haven't played aren't just him ignoring the obvious stuff for bashing lolz, or him missing something extremely obvious.
He's just aren't trustworthy anymore.
