iD from about that time forward seems to have increasing difficulties with basic concepts like "What defines a proper Boss?" and "Is this game part of a series?".

It was a great fight because it was such a bitch to get up and down the level to fire shots at it. Better than Barons of Hell that ended up being regular enemies.

Honestly, a lot of the bosses in 90's FPS games were kind of trash. I'm not 100% sure why. Maybe those types of games aren't built for long encounters with a single enemy, so either get something excessively cheap or just a tankier version of a normal enemy. Or in the case of Quake, a thing that just sits there.

Two barons I think was an ok bossfight for part which was the demo of the game. Not amazing or anything, but adequate, consider that most people were still complete noobs at FPS at the time.
The Cyberdemon in E2 is obviously not very threatening the way he is used, but countless usermaps have utilized him extremely effectively.

At about 6 years old, I spent 2 hours trying to just shoot it with every gun at every angle I could think of. Then after enough time I managed to telefrag it by pure random chance, and had no idea what the fuck happened but just accepted.

The final boss fight in Soul Reaver 2 against human Raziel, because you're literally immortal in the final act of the game so it barely even registers as a boss

>> No.7998464

Doom's Cyberdemon can work as a tough monster mixed with other monsters in an otherwise normal level to create tension. But in a 1v1 "boss arena" like in Doom 1's E2, its just boring circlestrafing.
Spidermastermind E3 Boss in Doom 1 is even worse, thanks the the plasma being in the map, alongside being able to bring in a BFG from a previous level, which will kill her in a matter of seconds.

The worst part is the ludonarrative dissonance. This fight rubs in your face the fact that you can't aim just a bit downwards.

the final Cyberdemon in Doom 3 has to be one of the worst
>spend the whole game honing your weapon skills
>armed to the teeth with ammo
>"let's do this!"
>click 3 times to win with Soul Cube
utterly atrocious. the Soul Cube for that matter was an awful concept, completely killed the tension because it could just automatically empty the room of enemies _and_ fill up your health. it's like they were too lazy to go about placing items in a thoughtful way. for that matter, there was way too much ammo throughout the game, never felt like i had to conserve or worry about it.

i know D3 is pushing the limits of Retro but that shit always bothered me.

I liked the icon fight, it's not a big epic battle but I didn't ever think it needed to be, still prefer cyberdemon over it though since you get to move around more

>> No.7999603

I could already not beat him because I preferred playing as Vela and so she had the best stats and weapons and then the stupid boss forces you to switch characters in a fixed order...

>> No.7999614

>>7999603
That's one way of trapping you making the final fight impossible. But even with all homing missle upgrades and everything, the boss is still impossible. I consider myself pretty good at video games and like a good challenge, but this fight is insanity. I have attempted at least 100 times and can't do it. It's a buggy and unfair fight all around and it ruins an otherwise fun game.

>> No.7999820

>>7999614

Yeah, I've seen the TAS and the fight is literally designed in a way that you start with your weapons fully loaded and in the end plink at him with your empty starting pistol. Which would be fine for an epic fight if he didn't also throw all that shit at you all the time because it takes so long so you lose your concentration.

Bosses were a mistake.

>> No.8002273

Overall I think the Mechanic of making it spew monsters at constant rate was good, but the weird precision firing was not. Particularly because never before in Doom were you tasked with lining up a shot vertically.

I made 2 Icon of Sin ripoffs for 2 projects, and I made both have a gauntlet where you have to reach the top of some kind of structure and just shoot a brain, while fighting large number of monsters and dealing with new spawns. I think that works pretty well.
