as a hardcore Shmup collector and player I think the Switch is the best console if you want to start getting into the retro shmups hobby

I recommend Gunbird 2 and psikyos because they are easy to remember and figure out not like the bullet hells or touhos

Just watched his video, he confirms Electric Underground's result by showing Gunbird 2 having 6 frames of input lag, other games are known to have more. If you are a "hardcore" player then use MAME to play Psikyo's games, the ports are unplayable.

Anything newer than those just makes me want to go back and play those high-water marks. I really struggle to get myself interested in any of the other big or more recent ones. I'm not sure if I'm just an old man, or if this is the sort've game that already had its golen age come and go.

the DC port also has the 6 frames of lag, you have to probably go shmupmame to play it without it (even default MAME might be slow), so it looks every port probably suffers from it if those two both do
the Ikaruga switch port is the same (or even slightly better) than the DC port
I haven't measured these but from general feel, I think that the Blazing Star one is largely low lag, but I found R-Type Dimensions worse than MAME or some other ports

Its about 3-4.
Default MAME is as good as shumpmame anymore since 0.217 or so. Just make sure to set it up correctly and check that "low latency" option thats present now. It has a lot of the optimizations that shumpmame has now, they're just not enabled out of the box.

- Iridion 3D and Iridion II are probably the system's standout original IP in the genre. They look and sound gorgeous and play great, the sequel more so than the first game.
- Another solid original IP and very much an obscure hidden gem is Invader, an EU only release. Good luck finding a cartridge though.
- The Advance iteration of Gradius (called Galaxies in the US and Generation in JP) seems perfectly fine and fun.
- Steel Empire is another solid port/remake of the Mega Drive game of the same name (though EU/JP exclusive) considering the hardware limitations.
- Danny Phantom is fine but pretty easy due to its target audience (being a Nicktoons licensed title).
- There's a homebrew bullet hell called Vulkanon which looks crude and only has a few levels and one (albeit great) soundtrack song but runs buttery smooth even with tons and tons of on-screen projectiles and is tough as nails.

If you're dedicated to beating the game then you'll eventually do it. Shmups are a genre where subsequent games you play will feel easier to gel into because movement and shots typically carry over. And despite being simple Gradius isn't exactly a walk in the park, especially for new players.

Here's some helpful tips:
>rapid fire
Always put this on even if the game in question didn't originally have it. Most everyone does it and there's no reason to stress your hand over archaic design.

>save states
If your goal is to 1cc then you need to practice the segments you're having troubles with over and over again. It's inefficient to replay the whole game just so you can get a taste of Stage 4. And even if you just want to clear the game, continues be damned, it's still an extremely effective tool that'll help you learn the layout of a stage.

>sleep
It's extremely important, even for video games. If your mind is wandering off or distracted in the slightest you could very well be throwing away a good run. It's important you stay well-rested and relaxed the whole time.

>alternate shmups
If you're at the point where the ideas and strategies you have are exhausted, then take a break with a different shmup. I find switching from some older arcade games to more modern, bullet-cluttered ones is refreshing (and vice-versa). It's good variety that also helps your skill improve.

>1cc
This is almost always a personal goal and never an obligation. Don't feel like you have something to prove. As long as you enjoy the genre then you're a shmup player and a cool person in my book.

Godspeed, anon. And good luck!

_ I fell for the git-gud-play-hard-game meme and while it was fun at first eventually the endeavor stopped feeling rewarding and the process turned to a simple function of inputting grind/save state hours to get a very predictable and expected output.
_ I could pretty accurately predict how long a game would take to 1cc or how long a certain score would take, and then it would just be a matter of pouring in the expected number of hours to get the predictable result.
_ Part of the fun at the start was not knowing if the output was even possible and having no idea how long it would take and learning efficient ways to practice, etc.
But the most efficient route to a goal is not necessarily the most fun. I've come to this conclusion with many ''hard'' games in multiple genres in the past.
_ The casual mindset is really good to maintain throughout this sort of time wasting hobby imo

I dunno about the community but sourcing the actual games themselves is a fucking nightmare. Feel free to call me a shmup newbie but some of these games just shouldn't be this expensive. Exhibit A: Cotton Reboot. "Fairly" easy to find online but it costs $60 (New Zealand money) plus $12 GST Plus $10-$20 for shipping. A 30 minute game costs almost a hundred fucking dollars.
Maybe i'm looking in the wrong places, where do you guys buy shmups?

The more expensive the game the more precious it feels to own and collect and show off, and yes it's more exciting to play a game you own that cost 800$ than some crappy emulated version you got from some hack3rz site

I can understand that mentality, I've shelled out upwards of $200 for a single game to which I played it to death now keep it on display. But idk if I would feel proud to own something like, again, Cotton Reboot. Cover art doesn't look that great either so displaying is out of the question. idk what to feel about all this, i'm still new to shmups in general just figured they'd be cheaper

I just download the ROMs that have changed, takes five minutes and is preferable to using nearly two decade old version of an emulator. I can’t believe people still think that the entire ROM set changes every month. But it’s too much to expect someone who thinks the Switch is decent emulation hardware to have worked that out.

I can't get past the input lag in Gunbird 2. It feels so bad to play. I skipped the rest of the Psikyo switch games for that reason. The switch is 1-frame laggier than everything else by design which isn't the end of the world, but so many of these shmups are emulators and not ports which adds extra latency. The actual ports like Ikaruga are more responsive, it's just a shame that the modern ports of Ikaruga are missing all the extra features that went into the gamecube release. Except Psyvariar, that's Unity trash and laggy as fuck despite being a port. I have Darius, Cotton, R-Type Final 2 and Raiden IV to play and I'm guessing that Darius and R-Type are going to be laggy since they were never "quick" games back in the day, Raiden will be okay and Cotton could go either way.

>archaic design
sorry about your delicate, weak hands, but this is as good as cheating. shmups are games of mental and physical endurance, what makes you think button mashing isn't an intended part of the experience? even games where rapid fire is included (eg: Raizing games) it feels a bit lame, since you're really only controlling the movement. it robs you of those moments where you really have to exert yourself in a tight spot. why not hook up electrodes to your brain and play mentally so you don't have to strain yourself at all?

>Most everyone does it
most onions babies, yes

>save states
yeah, actually playing the game like people would have back in the day sure is "inefficient." don't worry about the fact that playing it from the beginning further refines your skills and memory for those levels, just skip to where you die and play it over and over until it becomes rote and then stitch everything together like some shmup frankenstein. this is only slightly less lame than auto-fire; better would be to record yourself and then study the videos.

technology might make beating games more "convenient," but you sacrifice authenticity and the genuine skill required to beat it from start to finish without having brute forced the harder levels into your muscle memory. play over and over again until you get bored or get better, then come back and try again. the above practices are heresy and shamefuru.

DingDongwhatchi?.. just more cookie-cutter, boring "shots-everywhere" junk to BORE me to TEARS, sorry. Last one of these new games I tried was Ikaraga... Sorry! but I learned to play color-matching games when I was two, don't need to do it anymore! Deleted THAT computer application from my Dell desktop after about 20 minutes.

R-Type, Gradius, Darius... those classics are a little more up MY alley. No TINY hitboxes to make the game look harder than it is, no half-naked japanimation cartoon girls, no gimmicky scoring to cover up the total lack of any real substance... just a little thing called good old-fashioned GAMEPLAY that seems to be forgotten nowadays... yep, I love all the super-duper powerups, and checkpoints.. yes recovery is HARD but not IMPOSSIBLE. You actually have to put in a little elbow grease to get your strength back! Something the little ones today could stand to learn from, if you ask me! They seem to want games where you can kill everything on the screen with one button press, right after inserting a coin! Instant gratification with no challenge. And personally, I usually prefer a "side-view" kind of shooter compared to a "bird's eye view" one, all those obstacles give levels a lot more personality, not such a common thing when every me-too game wants to look and play the same.

Me, I've been playing a lot of R-Type part two lately. I can only clear a couple of boards on my first man right now. I may wear out my joystick before I can manage my one quarter win! But I don't quit! What can I say, I prefer a little hard work to getting a free handout! Playing some Wings of Wor on my Sega too, and Biohazard Battle. Great vintage stuff!
