Are there any good romhacks for Final Fantasy on the NES? There are a shitload out there, both on romhacking.net and in random websites, but I'm never sure on which ones are actually good. I especially despise the ones that don't do anything to fixbugs or the thief.

Final Fantasy Ultra - Champion Edition. Its hard, has replay value, and really thinks about its basic mechanics.

Final Fantasy Restored is the only one worth talking about

That sounds interesting. I am suddenly excited about playing this, after having barely read anything about it. (I am not OP - just a passerby.)

There are some mini-reviews/previews if you look it up on youtube.

Dragoon X Omega 2

Single character sci-fi post apocalyptic rom hack of FF1, very unique atmosphere though more simplistic gameplay wise.

Alright I just played up to the second town. Seems solid so far. Several changes are evident - some clearly good, some neutral, and a few mildly but tolerably bad.

>No FFI patch where it's just bugfixes and absolutely nothing else, as everybody's gotta alter the base experience in one way or another
Annoying.

The game has a disasembly

>check patch log for what areas are being modified
>cross reference with disassembly
>keep only the stuff you want

This sounds... sorta familiar. Was Dragoon X Omega 1 a Dragon Quest romhack?

literally FF Origins on PS1
it even allows you to disable the LIFE/gold needle in combat if you want it to be exactly as shit as the NES version

Yes they are related! Dragon X Omega 2 is the sequel. I played both hacks back in the day and I’m psyched to find out dxo2 has had further refinement and bug fixing since then. The original release of dxo2 was a little too hardcore and kinda grindy.

Wow, someone else remembers the Dragoon X Omega games. I played through both of those on my Nokia 6960 back in the day.

I still have the 2008 version, had no idea there was an update in 2015. Thanks for letting me know anon! I might breeze through it in easy mode on my Android phone.

Oddly enough, the dialog boxes won't display for DXO2 in FCEUX 2.2.3, but they do display in virtuaNES 0.92 and that NES emu in SymbianOS.

Getting into the elf area. Still having a good time. I wish the hackers hadn't turned off the little cute whine sound that plays when you talk to people. Or failing that, it would have been awesome if they would have stopped the silence that plays instead from disrupting the music despite being silence. It's not a huge problem or anything though.
