Actually, I really wonder if this wasn't the plan, at one time. The general vibe of Final Fantasy VIII just screams "TOO MANY COOKS IN THE KITCHEN!", and it sounds very plausible that the actual game designers would think that's a neat narrative twist just to have some calcified upper-management douchebag not appreciate the flourish and veto it three-quarters of the way through (I'm sure the words "focus group" would've come up at least once in the meeting).

The overall game has this weird ongoing internal fight with itself over what it wants to be. On one hand it comes off as a relatively light hearted mid 90s sci-fi high school anime but I'm guessing the Evangelion influence drove it to also inject a heavy dose of mindscrew imagery and themes. But it doesn't really know how to integrate them so the weirdness just kind of happens and the game moves on like normal.

>> No.7985284

Triple Triad royally messed up the game by inverting the genre's pacing. Typically in RPGs the towns are respites between dungeons but in FFVIII you spend most of your time hanging out in the towns playing cards to buff up while you breeze through the dungeons in like 5 minutes. This makes a game that is technically no longer than similar RPGs of its era feel sluggish as shit.
