This game is actually a cult classic here where I live lol. A must play for every NES owner.

I'd put Crazy Castle on the list. It has shit reputation because of AVGN but it's a nice little puzzle game.

Also Crisis Force. Back when Konami was legendary.

Played it recently and it doesn't hold up as well as I remember. The story is still interesting and the setting is cool but the puzzle solutions are kind of inconsistent. For example there's one puzzle where you need to shoot a lock to open a door but if you try that anywhere else you just waste a bullet. Still worth checking out though for the atmosphere.

You mean because your upgrades don't stack? Assuming you mean 6-2, that level is hard as shit, yeah, but after playing it hundreds of times I think I could do it again easily. It's just a matter of memorizing the ideal path.

Also you probably already know about them but you should try Uninvited and Shadowgate if you liked Deja Vu. There's also a sequel but it didn't get a NES release. These other games also have issues with obtuse puzzles though, and to a greater degree than Deja Vu.

I don't think it's a particularly good game, but I did actually enjoy Deadly Towers. I didn't realize that the dungeons wrapped around at certain points, and I ended up with some huge, convoluted maps of them when I played it as a kid.

>>7983052
I've always loved it as well. I've been toying with the idea of making something similar to it, but I'm not sure I would be able to pull it off very well.

Astalon: Tears of the Earth is somewhat similar, though as with many modern games it's perhaps a bit too focused on ensuring the player is making constant progression.

I don't think they do, aside from the area where you select your stage. There are teleportation carpets though. I'm not saying it's a great game but it gets a bit of an unfair reputation.

I think 2-2 was actually the hardest part of the game for me. Keep at it, though. There's a lot of needle-threading and wall-hugging involved. For that level in particular it might actually help you to stay near the very bottom and spam-blast some of the more annoying enemies like the turrets (both the wall ones and the green circle ones), rather than hanging back and trying to dodge.

If you liked Deja Vu, you should really play one of the computer versions instead. The NES ports of Shadowgate and Uninvited were relatively cloe to the original, but Deja Vu was HEAVILY censored and rewritten, which really hurts the atmosphere. The original script is far far superior.

Second. I liked the attention to detail in this game. For example, even after you've "solved" the case, in order to get the good ending you have to hunt down all the false evidence planted against you all around town and destroy it.

And the NES version actively fucks over the player and makes this difficult to do
>one of the items you need to discard is the gun
>as a safety measure againt softlocking yourself, the NES version doesn't let you discard items you haven't used for what they're supposed to be used for yet
>the gun is used to shoot up the filing cabinet to read info on the various drugs you find in the small bottles, which is info you can easily just trial-and-error your way through
>as a result a lot of players fail to realize you CAN shoot up that cabinet, and in the NES version, the gun you need to discard to beat the game can't be discarded until you do
>even if you do realize, it's something you can easily ignore doing on a replay since you'd already know which bottle does what, meaning you find yourself unable to discard the gun on your second playthrough with no idea why

Great going, porters.

I immediately thought of Legacy of the Wizard when playing through it. I really enjoyed it, but you're right, the game does have a bit more guided approach, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.
