I only played DS sequel and it bored me af
If original is also like that, I don't want to play

Art style/graphics is cute though

I remember there used to be commercials for some educational game system that always triggered me when it came on because towards the start some smug broad throws a copy of Yoshi's Island in the trash.

It's one of the greatest SNES games and a genuine classic. Subsequent Yoshi games don't come close in comparison. Don't let their failings make you lose sight of the true greatness of Yoshi's Island.

>> No.7967020

Very soulful and good game but couple things I didn’t like. 1) no overworld, game feels like a series of stages with no connection. 2) no secret branching levels. SMW was so good bc of all the secret exits that lead to awesome stuff like blue yoshi

Game is great. Unlike Donkey Kong Country all the sequels should be avoided and only the first game matters.

Yes it is. I always play it at summer and then I always book for a vacation after finish it. YI give such a summer travel vibe!

what happened to the anti-YI autist? He used to spam this board day and night.
Anyway, great game. As a kid I didn't care about 100% completion and just had a blast playing it casually. Later on I finally unlocked everything and it was like re-discovering a game that I already loved. Kamek's Revenge is one hell of a challenge if you want a perfect score.
Also, I wish I knew about the secret code to unlock the 2 player mode back then, I wonder why they hid it behind a code, if I knew about it back then I would have spent quite a lot of time in it playing with friends and cousins.

I never could get into it. It's a bit gay. And I don't know why its the sequel to SMW instead of being a standalone title. Why is mario a baby? It would have been better if Yoshi was just a standalone character like in Yoshi Story or how Wario was made a standalone character in his similar sequel-theft.

>> No.7968007

>>7967989
>It's a bit gay.
sounds more like projection on your part. the game is a literal story about a baby being delivered to his parents, it's literally heterosexual.
>And I don't know why its the sequel to SMW instead of being a standalone title.
The "SMW2" title was only used in the west. You could say it has certain elements from World (namely Yoshi himself), but it also has a lot of elements from SMB2/USA and also a lot of original ideas. In Japan it's called "Super Mario: Yoshi's Island".
>Why is mario a baby?
Because it's a prequel, if you want to make sense of it on a timeline.
>It would have been better if Yoshi was just a standalone character like in Yoshi Story
To be fair, if you don't get hit, you kind of forget the baby is there. Also, the bits with super baby mario were a fun break from the main gameplay with Yoshi.

The grading system kills the game for me. Even if it's only for optional content it adds too much pressure to play the game perfectly and search for every single collectable.

I played the gba version as a kid. Recently played the snes version and thought something was wrong when yoshi didn't make those annoying sounds when he fluttered, tongued, ass stomped things. I soon realized that they chose to add those awful sounds to later versions.

I first played it as an adult (though I was a teen when it came out) and I was put off by the item collection crap, but it was clearly a beautiful piece of work. I didn't love it but I didn't dislike it. I think it is a good game, and for the right player it is surely one of the best games.

They really botched the music in the sequels. They leaned so hard into muh baby theme that they forgot that the original game's music definitely had edge to it.

Ugly art style, very slow paced gameplay, small OST, awful and unfun to 100%, was made as a tech demo once DKC stole NIntendo's thunder.
I dare say this is the most overrated Nintendo game. Other candidates like OoT and the like are at least good to some extent.

I played it once, made me sad for some reason. Too childlike and made me sad that I wasn't a kid again, if that makes sense. I'm retarded. I'm sure it's a good game though.

Haven't played the DS one in a while but wasn't it decent? Yoshi Touch 'n Go gets carried by the OST/Sound Design as well, quite sad it was a score attack game. If it was a fully fledged game it would've been amazing.

Graphics and music are some of the best on the SNES, and it's an alright game for the first couple of worlds before it gets tiresome.
In my opinion the movement is too slippery and the jump mechanics are some of the worst in the genre. Between the drop-off after leaping, the irritating SFX, and the strained fluttering, jumping just feels awful.

It's better than SMW on every aspect, better graphics and effects, better level design, better boss, better music, better replayability, ... overall just a better game, but because it was released too late, it didn't give as much impact as SMW

I understand where you're coming from, but you can choose to just ignore it. The pressure is created by you, not by the game. I, too, was once tormented by this kind of stress, but I learned to let it go and only do 100% of a game if I'm really having fun doing so. Yoshi's Island is a great game, but I don't think I'll ever 100% it again. Nowadays, I just try to play it the best way I can, but without replaying stages for a perfect score.
