Fundamentally CRT filters make the image objectively worse, therefore even if a CRT filter was 100% perfect it would still look like ass by definition. It is impossible to emulate badness, because objectively even a perfect emulator will still be bad. Only a real CRT can is capable of displaying a CRT like image without being bad.

>too dark, especially noticeable on whites
>too blurry
>too much or not enough halation or nearby color saturation
>uneven scanlines
With 4K+ OLED and royale tweaked they look acceptable. Not replacement tier, but pretty good and far better than a raw image. They also don't particularly screenshot well because the scanlines will look like dogshit processed at a different resolution

>> No.7967789

I wonder how many more years it will take people to realize the varying luminance of pixels on a CRT are an integral part of the graphics?

On a CRT a dark colored pixel is a little blob. And a bright colored pixel is a big blob.

But on a LCD every pixel is a little square regardless of luminance. This creates jaggy effects and wipes away subtle details. Metallic objects in particular lose their gradations in tone and gain harsh cut-offs instead.

If you're playing a /vr/ era game without any filtering on a LCD you're effectively lowering the game's resolution and taking away several graphical effects. Akin in a way to playing a PC game on lowest settings with lower resolution.

IDK why preferring to play on a CRT is such a hard concept for some people go grasp. The art in these games were never meant to be displayed on an LCD, so game artists did their work on CRT. There's some visual affects that just don't work on LCD, even if it wasn't intentional by the dev. Its like how scanned in paintings arent the same as seeing a painting in real life, because you can't see the thickness and sheen on the paint (which are often used intentionally to create extra depth)

how do you actually figure out how to configure them though? Using retroarch and there are dozens of settings to adjust CRT-Royale and it's overwhelming

Some indie games might not work well on a CRT if they have inconsistent pixel resolutions, for instance River City Girls, the pixel positions feel unnatural

It sure does.

Thanks anon, I'm familiar with very little of the saturn's library, and this both looks and plays pretty great. Posting the shot on /wg/ to avoid the file size limits.

Because making pixel art more tolerable on HD displays is more about display gamma and dithering than scanlines or emulating analog technology.

If the idiots spending all their time on 50-pass CRT shaders would instead master an all-in-one gamma and dithering shader, that would be all she wrote.

The same fools that tell you CRT shaders won't be "fully accurate" until 8k are also the ones that tell you the ones that are out now are authentic-looking. So which is it?

How the fuck should I play this shit? It does not even work on all megadrives and emulation is not yet an option
