I think about this more than I should.
How big is, or was, Sonic in Japan. I mean, it's his home country, he was the mascot of the biggest competitor to Nintendo after all up to the new millennium. I know the pool was way bigger in Japan than in the west but Sega still has a big foothold with arcades and shit.
Is there any real fandom for Sonic there? Do they consider it weird that he's somehow way bigger among foreigners to the point they make a Hollywood movie about him? Do they know about the American comics? The different canons? Several different cartoons?
I have seen some Japanese fanart of characters like Sally so there must be at least a few sonic autsits over there.

IDW comics were published in Japan a few years ago. Archie's probably weren't.
