I'm honestly desperate enough for some of these games that if they sold them in this condition but priced them properly enough to reflect their damages that I would honestly buy them, given that they would still play and work. I managed to get a hold of an actually decent quality copy of Silent Hill 1 this way. It got it's priced reduced because it had the Hollywood Video label stuck on the cover of the disc and the inside of the manual was torn up and had water damage. From the outside though? The cover showed perfectly fine and the disc was in perfect quality in the original case. So from a "show front" perspective the case and manual looked perfectly normal with a fully functional disc, which I considered a blessing.

Sometimes weird stickers/labels are actually what make the game unique or give it a history. I took some shitty game shop's "warranty void if removed" sticker off of my super wide gear, and it left this "VOID" pattern (of course the sticker is tamper-proof, to show that the original had been removed and make it difficult/impossible to replace). But you know what? I actually think the VOID pattern looks cool, and now that my cunt finally told warranty fuckers to shove it, I can wear it as a big middle finger to all those fucking corporate snakes who shit this garbage into the world. Been thinking I should get a bart simpson sticker or something to put with it, maybe him flipping you off. Would go well with the vibe and era of release.

I prefer my labels and stickers to be as new as possible, but sometimes I buy used cartridges with marker writings from previous owners and I don't mind it. It really makes you think what history this game had.

Also, not a retro, but a few years ago I've bought a Japanese version of Custom Battler Bomberman for DS and on the inner side of the box, there was a tiny doodle of Bomberman head, drawn with a stylus or maybe a finger nail. You could only see it with the right lighting. I thought it was super cute.

They are not rare. I have had many Sonic 2 *not for resale* carts complete in box. I use to buy used Model 2 Genesis units quite often, and I would get Sonic 2 *not for resale* along with it. I have two copies right here. I use to pawn them off. They were packaged with the Genesis Model 2 in North America. It was the most popular bundle for Sonic the Hedgehog 2. If the cart with the Sega sticker plastered over the "not for resale" sticker is real. Then Sega even had overstocks of the not for resale carts.

Millenials started working and suddenly had lots of money, and then they got interested in the games of their childhood.

>>7968204
>the real question is why on earth was the market ever as low as it once was?
Easy. Games were old enough to be yesterday's news but not old enough to be vintage or cool. Case in point: in 2008, EB Games was selling used, complete Gamecube games for $9.99 and entire consoles for $19.99. Nobody wanted a Gamecube, everyone was still lining up for a Wii. Gamecube was an outdated children's toy that had outlived its usefulness, the Wii was the hot new shit. Now every nigger and his dog wants a Gamecube and suddenly these things are worth a ton of money. Meanwhile you can easily pick up a used Wii for $20 and the games are $5-$10 tops. Similar story for the PS3 and X360.

>>7969472
Some of my N64 collection is made up of pristine carts and boxes that I kept as a kid, but most of it looks like this because I was picking up these "garbage" carts for $4-$5 a piece in the early 2010s when I "rediscovered" the N64. At the time I was a poor student and it was a good way for me to maximize the number of games I could play (I could get 5 games that looked like shit for $20, or one game that looked good for $20). Nowadays $20 is actually not a terrible deal for that.

I have a feeling that the 6th generation is the last series of consoles that will be truly collectible. By the 7th gen, you started to run into updates and other nonsense. It was increasingly acceptable to release games with bugs because, hey, you could fix them with updates. There will still be an element of collectability, but you'll be getting launch titles which may or may not have bugs and glitches that were fixed later. It sort of takes away some of the appeal.

8th gen stuff, with its always-on online bullshit and constant updates, is going to be more or less nothing but trash. Think about a game like Animal Crossing on the Switch, and think about HOW MUCH of the game is dependent on updates that were released after its release to keep the interest of the zoomies and their microscopic attention spans. In 20 years, you could buy a game cartridge, but unless you find a Switch with all the updates, the base game is not going to give you the complete experience. Meanwhile, Animal Crossing on the Gamecube is the same now as it was in 2002 (although the clock is ticking on that 2030 end date)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but someone on /v/ said PS3 games are not on the Playstation store because they're hard to emulate or port to modern Playstation consoles. If that's the case, PS3 will also be collectable. Xbox does a good job of porting and enhancing their old games to new systems so I don't think 360 will be as valuable.

Sega Saturn cases are sturdy plastic, Game Boy Advance boxes are cardboard, so that's not really the same thing at all. A Sega Saturn case in a bubble envelope is acceptable, a GBA box isn't.

so i found out just last week i'm going to be a dad. i have a ton of n64 and snes games. i've seen the prices for n64 stuff in particular jump like crazy recently. just this month my loose copy of stunt racer 64 shot up from the 200s to an average sale price of over $450. how much longe do you think i should hold? or is this the peak and i should sell off the stuff i don't need anymore while i can?

What's wrong with you? This is the time to hold on to those things. I'll tell you from experience, my grandma kept around a lot of old toys, books, and movies and as a kid I loved getting to play with, read, and watch all that stuff. Not only did I get to hear about those things, I got to actually experience them, and that was a great family bonding experience. Don't sell off all your stuff, keep it and show it to your kid when they're old enough.

i plan on it, but let's be real. my kid isn't gonna want to play super bowling and i can get a fair amount of money for that. i have a fair amount of n64 stuff that isn't really that fun to play, but worth money. of course i'll share the classics with my kid, but if someone wants to give me hundreds of dollars for some off beat racing game that isn't even top 5 on the system, i have to think about cashing in at some point.

I don't think it's just about sharing the "classics," but about sharing the things you used to play, even the off-beat or less good stuff. This is why /vr/ makes fun of these people. A complete in box game is a nice thing to have and preserves gaming history. A loose cart is missing a lot of the item you're supposed to be collecting. The data on the roms can be replicated for free, so that doesn't matter. A loose cart in shit condition should be worthless. The fact that they're able to sell this shit for double digit prices or more indicates the market is at a peak.

Isn't it more accurate to say the world that you knew is now being more fondly appreciated by people who were also there, but who either could never afford it, or who gave it up to achieve success, and now want to revisit it? I mean, part of my fun with old games is playing the machines I never had when I was there.

I feel like the notion of "my past is being stolen from me" comes off too much as someone wanting to make themselves into a victim, or moreover, giving into nagging feelings of inferiority or self-doubt. I only make such assumptions, however, because not too long ago, I was the same way. I think I've improved myself a little bit since then, so I don't think as darkly anymore, but I wouldn't be surprised if a website such as this had a lot of people who were still in that kind of zone, pic related.
