OpenTomb used to be a very promising (decompile) project too, made by TeslaRus, but it has been abandoned. However some of the code was used in the OpenLara project. For TR2 the best way nowadays is TR2Main, don't bother messing with Peixoto's fix anymore

TR2 was gay. They took everything that was good about the first game (mainly the sense of intense isolation and exploration interspersed with occasional bursts of combat) and turned it into a game where Lara shoots hundreds of people in the middle of a big city in broad daylight (with literally zero repercussions).

I get that the developers wanted to up the combat difficulty since 90% of the original game's fights could be cheesed by standing on top of a block and shooting whatever animal was chasing you with your infinite ammo pistols, but throwing dozens of hitscanning bulletsponge human enemies into each level was not the solution.

Not only that, but because you can now save anywhere on consoles (instead of having to use save crystals like in TR1), the devs assumed you would be saving far more often, so they used that as an excuse to add significantly more instant death traps.

I give the level designers props for a few things (a a sunken ocean liner lying upside down in a giant cavern at the bottom of the ocean is a pretty creative place to set some of your gameplay), but ultimately I think TR2 is the weakest of the original 4 mainline TR games.

Maria Doria was alright, I like the idea of the setting more than the actual execution, it's really just a succession of small rooms and corridors, feels like there's a bit of a missed opportunity with barely using preserved opulent and majestic vessel interiors, and exploring the backstory of its sinking and the people on board etc, instead of mostly rusty brown or gray engine rooms. It almost gets to Resident Evil 1 like atmosphere in a couple of brief rooms.

I have warmed up to the overall tone of the game, not focused on tomb raiding (so far) but with Venice-Oil rig-Maria Doria there's a cohesive focus on the water theme. It has issues with design and combat but they tried something different instead of just following a formula.

>>7921650
I loved the atmosphere and more-open ended design of The Deck but had a frustrating experience with it, as I took a shortcut (from two stacked boxes near the stern you can jump on a ledge to the left which leads to caverns) without realizing it (completely missed the stern door, which leads to draining a cave) and ended up playing the level in reverse from the end to the beginning, and got stuck as I encountered a game-breaking bug (since the cave wasn't drained, Lara gets stuck in a "wall" of water that appears out of nowhere and you can't backtrack). This should have been a cool gimmick but it was poorly implemented.

To whoever's in charge of this archive, that TR4 has an incorrect music track. The file "044_attack_part_i" is the cutscene audio from The Times Exclusive demo. In vanilla 4 it's supposed to be a short music track.

Ah, thanks for the heads-up, i remember i applied the Times exclusive level fix from pcgamingwiki (which is that audio file, and it indeed overwrote an existing audio file) but now i'm not even sure if i added the level itself (it was released as an extra downloadable level) but i'll look into it later. If I remember right there are tats based on actual ancient Egypt. One level required Lara to play ancient board game and they really did it this way. This board game was one of earliest ever, based on wheat they found in egyptian tombs, egyptians played in the afterlife.
Some other levels required a variation of heart weighing ritual where Lara had to balances ales, of course not with her own heart, and failing it resulted with release of ancient creature Egyptians believed to be devour of souls.
There's probably more but these two stand out among random and generic TR moments as they are very location-specific.

That's a great way to open a thread OP. Thanks a lot for neatly organizing all the stuff that's been shared.

I hadn't seen that interview with Gavin and Richard. I did not know that Peter Duncan had designed Barkhang Monastery - I didn't expect newcomers like Richard and Peter to design such great levels on their first attempt even if it took them so long to do so. I can't imagine how Temple of Xi would have played if Gavin hadn't cut almost half the level out - that level is already one of the longest of the classics and it's definitely one of the hardest in the first attempts.

Seems like Gavin only worked on one level from Tomb Raider 1 with Heather and that was the Cistern. Strangely not surprising given that Gavin created the Level Editor and only he could come up with the complexity and depthness that the Cistern has. It's my favorite level of the series and it's a shame he never worked in designing another level ever again.

>I have warmed up to the overall tone of the game, not focused on tomb raiding (so far) but with Venice-Oil rig-Maria Doria there's a cohesive focus on the water theme.
Wreckage of Maria Dona was an attempt to create a modern tomb by borrowing elements from the Titanic. Unfortunately due to all the action on the background, it never gave off that sense of isolation it deserved - puzzles were also a bit repetitive or just straight confusing. It's a shame because like you said, the atmosphere was there.

>I loved the atmosphere and more-open ended design of The Deck but had a frustrating experience with it, as I took a shortcut (from two stacked boxes near the stern you can jump on a ledge to the left which leads to caverns) without realizing it (completely missed the stern door, which leads to draining a cave) and ended up playing the level in reverse from the end to the beginnin
The Deck sure is a crazy level. I didn't know you could actually get yet another shortcut - it's such a shame this one ends up breaking the level and forcing you to restart instead of letting you proceed through another pathing. I think I can see why you attempted though - that section where you need to move the crates to find the opening in the rusty stern was pretty frustrating until you messed around with it and it's weird they didn't think about rewarding the player for finding a more difficult and out-of-the-box alternative.

>>7959201
Gorillas were faster and gang'd on you. I remember that section in Palace of Midas where 2 ambush you in the back while you are fighting 3 at front and unless you used your environment to your advantage (like the swimming pool or the upper blocks) you'd be fucked.

I'd say the best TR rip-off would be Sands of Time, which (again, fucking irony) would end up being a source to rip-off when making LAU.

The best Core-era game. Purists will insist on TR1, zoomers who never played any will insist on TR2, but TLR is where the game peaked under Core and I'd go as far to claim the whole franchise was at the all-time high.
Don't be surprised to find period reviews calling it out for being rethread of previous three games, too.

The puzzle is shitty not because of what you have to do (it's super obvious), but because if you so much as get one micron of Lara outside of the squares the game thinks you "failed" and you have to run all the way back and pull the chain again.

It's not the kind of precision platforming that the engine was set up for, so it's very easy to accidentally overshoot or undershoot a lit tile just enough to trigger a failure condition.

Eh, I don't put too much stock into sales figures, just because they're often more a reflection of previous entries in the series, positive or negative, eg. Diablo 3. It's also easy to imagine a TR game that did everything right still selling poorly, because zoomers have turbo-ADD. But if the game's bad, that's that.

You can see from a pic posted above that Shadow toned down the combat (half as much as Rise, but still more than TR2). It wasn't made by Crystal Dynamics but the Eidos studio that did the decent Deus Ex revivals. There's also an option to turn off most of the handholding aspects; but the game is still designed around them. The setting is also the best out of the 3 titles. But it's still the same Uncharted/AssCreed casualized DNA. I don't hate them, they're shallow but still fun and immersive adventures.

>because of shitty controls and camera
Because jumping, grabbing a ledge and climbing weren't assisted/automated, the controls were engineered for player control and precision, and because the levels themselves were full of traps, pits, environmental hazards, timed challenges, etc. without health regen, QTE, slow motion and other casual cancer.
>a corridor that loops on itself is still a corridor
The original games are renowned for their use of large scale levels where platforming is designed as puzzle solving, focused on fully three dimensional exploration and vertical design, etc. It's the reboot that, ironically despite its open-world structure, over relies on corridor-like design and small scale optional rooms for short attention spans.

I read grand majority of them, missed just a small handful of issues. I read most of the crossovers, too.
The quality and content is all over the place, really. As noted by other anon, anything Park-related is great, but it's mixed bag under other people. Especially crossovers are hit-and-miss, with some being particularly awful.
As for being "brutal" - reminder that it was the 90s, TopCow specialised in "edge" and Lara herself was sold (at least on marketing level) as dare-devil killer.
If anything, I'm always salty Glénat got cucked out of their very early deals for Tomb Raider comics. Dark Eons only have a single issue, but it's head and shoulders above anything ever tied to the franchise. And I'm saying that while enjoying the TopCow comics a lot.
