IMO the games had lots of soul up until Gen 3 which still has traces of the GBC games.
Gen 4 was when things went south.
If Silver had a Battle Frontier it'd be the perfect game.
GSC are the games you experience once and move to another game but Emerald can be replayed for a long time after the league thanks to the BF.

yes it may allow that, but if you really wanted to overhaul it a bunch it would seem easier to just use a whole new game engine instead of tweaking a reverse engineered of an old engine that was optimized for different very limited hardware.

But it suffers from being a 4th gen game and everything that implies (natures, EVs, IVs, stat splits, rules, all that shit) and being on a bad console (I hate the DS's build quality and buttons, makes playing games there physically painful on my hands)

It was great all the way through gen 4. Gen 5 is when things started to feel different because they tried to make it international and stopped basing everything in japan, but it was still a good game. gen 6 was decent but extremely bland due to the shift to 3d and it has all been downhill from there.

i would say gen 5.

You need to still reimplement all GBA system and library calls, reimplement low-level shit such as PPU and sound ports (maybe reusing some GBA emulator code) to make it to start.

Sun & Moon was pretty good, but not excellent, X & Y before it could have been better, and I have no goddamn idea what the fuck they did with Sword & Shield, it's a fucking mess.
>we need to have a copy of every single asset in the game for every single location cell, so that the filesize gets bloated to complete shit (hope this doesn't bother you, what with the Switch having a small storage capacity out of the box!)

I could maybe excuse this if they put a lot of effort into making the game look really good, and paid a lot of attention to detail, but they didn't, it really DOES look worse than the 3DS games.
