I haven't played in many years but I enjoyed playing mostly Medic and Soldier. Really the only class I didn't really play at all was Sniper.

I know Half Life 2 is okay for this board but is TF2 also okay? Not that I'll object, but coffin dodgers will come screaming in a few.

Don't have one. I'm a team player so it depends on who I'm playing with, against, the map, etc. I have about equal play time on everything except spy.

I alternate between medic and engineer in phases that repeat in an endless cycle. For now if I had to pick a favorite class I'd go with medic. Its nice to be the ubercharger that could possibly turn the tide in tf2, and it feels nice when I get compliments for doing a good job as a medic.

Its also nice being able to use other teammates as meatshields to hide behind I don't think tf2 gamers would want it any other way.

The downside is that I am a high priority target for every enemy and especially the snipers and spies I am their #1 top priority.

Our rationale for choosing the fifth-generation systems as a cut-off is not based on age, but instead on what we deem to be particular technical attributes of these consoles compared to the sixth-generation and subsequent consoles. Specifically, we believe that there is enough of a style difference between the fifth- and sixth-generation consoles in a way we do not believe exists to the same extent for the sixth- and seventh-generation consoles or beyond that there is a benefit to focusing on the former (and earlier).

The sixth generation was the first full generation of consoles where the use of bitmap-based 2D in games was purely for the purposes of style rather than technological expedience. The sixth generation also saw the rise of certain styles of games which still dictate the games we play today, including Halo, which presaged an era where first-person shooters would be designed with consoles as first-class citizens, changing from Quake-influenced twitch shooters to slower games with limited weapon carrying and also popularising the use of vehicles in FPS games beyond just replicating rail shooter mechanics; Grand Theft Auto III and its sequels, which crystallised the attributes of the open-world third-person action-adventure; The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, which saw the first signs of the series becoming a mainstream success, with a tighter scope over its sprawling predecessor; RE4 set the standard for all modern third person shooters, along with the start of what have become gargantuan series such as Call of Duty and Battlefield. There are precedents in other fields in maintaining strict characterisation based on style that does not progress simply because of age.

As much as I love tf2, this. Its literally impossible for me to picture it as a retro game. The cutoff should've been 2006/2005.

Haven't played since matchmaking was added. Main was Sniper, objectively the best class in the game. <.1% of the playerbase can use it properly.

Otherwise:
Scattergun scout.
Direct hit, gunboats and pain train solly.
Stock GL, targe and pain train demo.
Backburner, flaregun and rake pyro (this is the best loadout no contest).

sure sniper is the most elegant class but i wouldn't say its ceiling makes it the best. maybe in certain modes and maps. if we're talking capture point, payload, and whatever other objective-based stuff they've got going on these days, i would say a keen medic is usually the tide-turner. being truly effective as medic means you pretty much have to watch every member of your team both to keep them all topped off and to figure out which guy(s) are close to a breakthrough.

a team can have three medics and still not feel like they even have one if those medics aren't really moving around, or are pocketing players that are just kind of padding their stats/don't really understand what the crux of a certain situation is. on the other hand a shrewd medic can pick someone out of a crowd who's going to get the job done and enable that person to break through a junction the team's been stuck on for ten minutes.

if you're playing with absurd player numbers on custom servers then demoman is often the best because you can just fire indiscriminately and pick off like ten guys

>Retro gaming means platforms launched in 2001 and earlier, and official game titles for those platforms released no later than December 2007
So no PS3. The December 2007 date is mainly just for things like PC and arcade games that don't have a clear hardware date. It explicitly excludes gen 7 consoles.

Yes, but it still means PS3 is "next", whenever the window of time shifts forward on this board. Janky, choppy-framerate, prone-to-overheating, prone-to-breaking, nogaems PS3 will be sitting aside the PS1 and the SNES in the "what's considered retro" category and people will just blindly accept it. It will happen this decade, probably within the first half. I hate everything about the 2020s so far and want off this clown ride.
