Is the DS Lite the best non emu way to play GBA games? What about the GBASP?

>> No.7921029

I don't like having 2 screens and only using one of them, maybe if it's a broken DS with only the bottom half working migjt be a good choise

>> No.7921085

no

>> No.7921108

I think the dpad is too mushy personally. I use an original DS instead, with flashme so I can have adjustable screen brightness.

>> No.7921118

Wouldn't 2dsxl be better and easier to find? I never had dslite so cannot compare. But 2dsxl with injected roms seems to be perfect for gba if savestates are not necessary

>> No.7921394

The cart would stick out on the Lite, unless you get a specific flashcart for it. But yeah, the Lite D-Pad is a bit mushy. Pretty much any other DS model is a better option, or the SP if you're willing to deal with it's lack of headphone jack

>> No.7921459

>>7920996
Honestly I really like the 3DS because it's real hardware (minus the cart) but the saves are convenient to back up wirelessly with FTP.

Yeah, running natively on 3DS is a good option and easy to do. Personally, for GBA I use my Micro a lot because it will fit any pocket, feels nice and I have a flashcart in it. But a lot of people find it unplayable.

>> No.7921589

>>7921557
As someone with huge hands it is a little tough to play for extended periods but my biggest gripe is the terrible motion blur. The micro and AGS-101 are both terrible choices for anything fast paced or with scrolling, but great for anything slower where motion matters much less.

>> No.7921619

Does anyone know if it's easy to fit an AGS-001 screen into an original GBA? I would rather not have the jank of modern IPS or the blur of AGS-101 but I much prefer the original's form factor. I feel the SP screen is honestly fine as long as you're not trying to play somewhere too brightly lit.

7921676

I barely notice any of the apparent "blur" on an AGS-101, but the SP overall feels a bit confined imo. If you don't mind modding, an original GBA with a FunnyPlaying V2 screen installed will be the best of both worlds (bright sharp screen, comfortable grip). That said, if you don't mind mushy buttons and the cart sticking out, a DS Lite should suffice.
For gaming at home, there's also the GameCube Game Boy Player with Game Boy Interface. You don't need the GBP disc or mod the console, just an Action Replay Disc and an SDGecko.

They're a bit too cheap. I've had about three so far as the middle bit keeps breaking. Had the same with two original ds as well.

>> No.7921776

>>7920996
Modded original GBA is the best way. SP is second best, but no headphone jack and kind of cramped buttons that aren't too comfortable.

DS screens aren't great for GBA, dpad is kind of trash and you got your carts sticking out of the bottom.

There are 3 objectively best ways to play GBA games:

-Original gba with backlit screen modded in
-Gamecube gameboy player with custom GBI software
-Consolized GBA

gba sp is good but not comfy to hold. ds lite is also good , and the cheapest option, but screen is cropped and also not that comfy

Without taking modding in consideration:

GBA SP 101 > GBA SP 001 > GBA Micro > OG GBA

With modding:

OG GBA with 101 Screen > same order as the above

The DS Lite is the worst system to play GBA because the buttons suck, the screen is small (actual 1:1 but with a black border) and the hinges break easily FOR NORMAL USE (which is why people turn these into "GB Macros")

Yes, the 3DS contains real DS hardware and also real GBA hardware. You can use it with VC injections or open_agb_firm. There are fewer features than software emulation (e.g. no save states) but it works just like a GBA should, right down to slowdown.

Wait am I missing something? Last time I went down that road I had to do some weird save injection via GodMode9, it was a big hassle compared to the ease of just ftping a *.srm file from retroarch or other emulators. Is there a simpler way of doing this now? It might make me actually use GBA injects on my 3ds.

>OG GBA with 101 Screen

There's a new option in town that slightly edges this out- funnyplaying's new DSi screens in an OG GBA. Exact same size as the original screen (well, the part you see, the screen itself is huge and requires shell modding) and 1:1 resolution with the GBA. Play a GBA game on your DSi in gbarunner2 to get an idea of what it looks like. I have an AGS 101 and a new DSi-screen-modded OG GBA and the DSi screen is brighter and more vibrant with slightly better viewing angles. Definitely recommend looking into it if you don't mind carving the shit out of your OG GBA shell and doing some soldering for brightness control. Oh, and it doesn't need a voltage regulator for full brightness unlike the AGS101 mod. The AGS101 mod reigned supreme for a long time but as of a month ago or so, the DSi screen option is king. Let me take a photo to compare.

I think so. It has a wider grip than the SP but also the more ergonomic hinged screen. Best of both the AGB and the SP. The only downside is no GB/C support.
The "best way" is using a gamecube with the GBA player, however.

in my experience i've found that homebrew gb/c emulators you can use with a ds flashcart are essentially perfect, so the ds lite is my favorite way to play games for those systems as well

>> No.7925291

>>7925254
Yeah I haven't tried those. I like to play games on a few different consoles so the common interface of a GB/C cartridge between them rather than the save files from an emulator is handy. Makes it easy to play stuff on a Super Gameboy or the GBA player or a DMG if I please.

correction: technically, it's hardware emulation, as the ARM chip isn't the same. it slows itself down to be pretty much equivalent though, and so is way better than emulation ever could be on the 3DS

>> No.7925342

>>7924705
You need gm9 if you use injects. open_agb_firm is great, you can go to it instantly on bootup without having to wait for home menu to load, and the roms and saves just exist on the SD card. Only annoyance is you can't switch between 1:1 pixels and stretching in the config, it's currently a compile-time option only.

No, the 3DS does have an ARM7 chip that is perfectly accurate when slowed down and the DS GPU can also enter a compatibility mode that is accurate to the GBA's too.

if it really is an ARM7 chip, why does it need to be slowed down? is it just a newer processor that was easier to purchase? is it just a core somehow slapped onto one of the other ARM chips?

>if it really is an ARM7 chip, why does it need to be slowed down? is it just a newer processor that was easier to purchase?
The DS and DSi use an ARM7 core clocked at 33MHz. The 3DS needed an ARM7 core anyway for DS backward compatibility. The GBA's CPU is clocked at 16MHz instead so it is downclocked for GBA compatibility.
>is it just a core somehow slapped onto one of the other ARM chips?
I'm pretty sure all the compute hardware in the 3DS is on the same SoC anyway.
