it's kind of cool to think that a little battery inside this game has been sending pulses of electricity for 21 years straight, preserving game data from long ago and literally powering the soul of the game. these things are practically alive.

I get a weird sense of satisfaction seeing games that were on CD get a cartridge version. The thought of a "big" CD with all the related moving parts being converted to a "small" solid state cartridge feels cozy for some reason. I kind of still get this feeling seeing Switch versions of games compared to the PlayStation and Xbox discs. Like the game is "safer" or something in that form.

I thought that the save files on n64 cartridges weren't battery dependent? I could be wrong though.

N64 was a retarded console.

The games that used FRAM and flash chips didn't need battery. The SRAM ones needed to be battery backed.

I get the same feeling. cartridge versions of disc games are insanely satisfying for some bizarre reason.

N64 is one of the best consoles ever made.
>basically 0 load times
>analog controls out of the box
>4 players out of the box, separate memory card for every player
>great graphics, the only 5th gen console to support true 64 bit games and 24 bit color, pushed 360k polys per sec
the 64 is legendary and you know it. a solid 30-40 good games that you can pop in and be playing within 10 seconds, no bullshit load times, just good gameplay.

Here's a random smattering of my games. Ocarina of Time has a battery for some reason, it's strange that Nintendo cheaped out on their magnum opus. Perfect Dark does not, so you might think no battery has to do with it being late gen right? Well, Pilotwings 64 here doesn't either, it has cart saves, it was a launch title, and i know it's a launch version of the game because i have personally owned it since 96!

Not him but why do N64fags always prance about load times? Will you run off like a gormless crackhead if you have to sit and wait longer than 15 seconds for a game to start? Do you have ADHD?

My Saturn's got a shit laser right now and the loading times with that are unbearable. Back then 5-10 seconds was fine. Over time on consoles with dying lasers, that shit turns into 40-50 seconds. Of course I can just replace the laser and will eventually but in terms of long term survival and shit cartridges definitely beat CDs both with the media themselves and the hardware of the system.

Since it's how the media is read it's kind of important.

Cartridges last longer, both the individual carts themselves and the drives that read them.

>basically 0 load times
The tradeoff is the cart is expensive and games can't exceed 8-100MB in size. The bigger the game is the more expensive the cart is. And that's a huge trade-off.
>analog controls out of the box
Does that make it the best console ever when the PS1 got it only a year later?
>4 players out of the box, separate memory card for every player
4 players is good, but there's little to no point in having separate mem cards for every player. Needing another memory card despite running on a cartridge format is a flaw, in fact.
>great graphics, the only 5th gen console to support true 64 bit games and 24 bit color, pushed 360k polys per sec
Yes, but with vaseline graphics, poor framerate, and awful textures. On practical terms it's not much of an upgrade from the PS1.

>>7917414
Back in the 5th gen era it was probably cheaper to fix the laser than to buy N64 games. Nowadays you could mod a hard drive or an SD card into the console.

Lmao what? The game's models and animations are insanely simplistic, all the soundtrack aside from the vocals on One Winged Angel was fucking cheap ass MIDIs the N64 could run circles around, really the textures and prerendered backgrounds only needed either some compression or a larger size cartridge.

>The Final Fantasy VI CG demo made for the Siggraph exhibition took 20 megabytes. The developers thought the demo had a visual impact, and there wasn't a question about which hardware Square would use in the future; to realize the promise of the demo, nothing but the CD-ROM format would suffice.

By the mid 90s FLASH and FRAM chips were already commonplace. Sega already used FRAM instead of battery backed saves for some of their genesis games. Battery backed SRAM saving in 1996 is totally ridiculous.
