I'm trying to set all my Tomb Raider games for whenever I want to play them. So far I managed to get only 1 and AoD as close to perfect as possible, and for the past 3 hours I've tried doing the same with 2 but to no avail.TR2Main just refuses to work, and I'm not sure if there's an equivalent to the auto installer for 1. On top of that, vanilla 2 only gives me a black screen, regardless of whether the game is windowed or full screen. Any help?

I did push that crate forward actually. And got to the small area with the lever that allows you to get the conveyor belt fuse. And then I got the fuse right after that crate before the armed guy and the lava pit. So I guess I missed an obvious one early on?

I would like to see Square-Enix commission some group to do modern ports of these games. No graphical updates, option to play in SW rendering or HW acceleration. Maybe also, non-shitty DOS gamepad support. More or less, take the original games, and make them work on modern OS's without having to scour the net for technical advice.

Just got to the end of the Cistern. Silver key was pretty cool, got it myself after traversing water corridors for 30 times. This was rewarding. The idea with water level is quite simple, but the implementation is really well done. There are a lot of visual hints that prompts you to change the water level.

Just started Atlantis during my first playthrough of TR1. I really liked the Egyptian levels even if the enemies in them are annoying. The combat in general isn't very good which is why I'm glad it isn't a huge focus. Greek and Egyptian levels are the best thing in Tomb Raider series. One of these classic games is basically 90% Egypt, including Ptolemy era too. I loved that game. They took 3000 years of Egyptian history and did it right. From Old Kingdom Pyramids of Giza to Greek era Cleopatra ruins in Alexandria.

iirc yes you can use the psx levels with openlara, just add them to the folder in the proper way
>Does it only change the water or Lara's model, or is it new fan textures for the whole game?
No, i mean yes it changes the water but you can turn that effect (among other effects) off, so it's optional. Lara's model is not changed (but you can if you want to, with mods).

Finished up Tomb Raider 1. Overall really enjoyed it. Didn't really care for Atlantis that much. Thats what I like about TRs take on Atlantis, the reality doesn't line up with the myth. Like the things that were going on there were so incomprehensible to ancient man that the only way to describe them was widly inaccurate. Add on to that a game of telephone via oral history and its pretty believable. Plato probably would describe Atlantis the way he did even was like it was in TR; a city of magic and advanced medicine.

The first link is a puzzle I felt was impossible to accomplish. I had to glitch the game out to be able to get to the top of the room. I don't know if it was a CPU timing issue or whatever but it's certainly not possible on the PC version the way this guy does it.

The second is a mix of my autism and bad design. Notice how the player takes damage in the video? Part of my autism with the TR games forces me to play without taking any damage so that I can actually roleplay the game and not hand wave away the numerous gunshots, rat bites, and saw hits Lara receives. I do not know how you're supposed to beat this part without taking damage. If you're at low health and you don't have medpacks, I think the game is just hardlocked for you. I've never found a walkthrough that avoids taking damage getting into that pit.

>Part of my autism with the TR games forces me to play without taking any damage so that I can actually roleplay the game and not hand wave away the numerous gunshots, rat bites, and saw hits Lara receives.
I understand this roleplaying for games like Resident Evil - since being bitten would mean the characters would be infected and unless they had natural immunity they would be dead - but it honestly does not fit a game like Tomb Raider TBQH. You just know Lara had to tank some damage at some point perhaps just not against the large and dangerous creatures (as any hit would almost be fatal).

>If you're at low health and you don't have medpacks, I think the game is just hardlocked for you. I've never found a walkthrough that avoids taking damage getting into that pit.
While I'm fairly certain a No Damage run is possible in Tomb Raider 1 without any glitches, I don't think the same is possible for Unfinished Business or the sequels. I don't like that design for the reasons you mentioned (there's some cool about figuring out a strat for a seemingly impossble segment) but I guess it's just inevitable unless devs consider that option when they create the game.

The first level from Tomb Raider 2 that felt like a return to the form. So far I haven't liked Tomb Raider 2 because it's less focused on exploration and more on combat (and a bad one at that - the approach to human enemies is always the same just changes if you're fighting meele or firearm enemies) so I really liked how huge this level is and how ambitious it feels to tackle it. It was very clever that it offered you the option to move through the level with two different design choices even though one is less obvious unless you're paying attention to your surroundings. I hope Tibet and China feel more like this and less like Venice and the Rig/Maria Dona.

On a side-note, I also have a shit-ton of ammo (800 magnum rounds, 1500 sub-machine rounds, 60 shotgun shells, 400 M16 clips and 42 GL rounds) so I'm wondering if I should stop conserving my ammo since I should be half-way through the game.

Just finished playing through Barkhang Monastery. Core Design really stepped up their game with this level. If The Deck was a return to form, Barkhang Monastery is really showing Tomb Raider 2 can head-to-head against the best levels of Tomb Raider 1. Amazing from the beginning to the end.

I really liked how they put the Jade Dragon after that insane death trap hoping players would catch on the time the rolling blade takes go back and forth. Then that throwback to the very first Egypt level where you need to check the back of the head of the sphinx where you find the key - in Barkhang Monastery you get the Golden Dragon. A really inspired level and never feels boring even when you get lost.

The monks helping you fight the thugs is a very nice addition - it's just a shame you can't lock on the thugs and end of risking firing off against allies. Only thing that really pissed me off about Barkhang Monastery was solving the box puzzle (that thing was really crazy to put together because you just know the top box can be moved but placing the bottom boxes seems an impossible tas until you realize you can drag the box using the space between the golden pots) and being rewarded fucking harpoons. Really Core?

I have a feeling the game might have peaked here (like Tomb Raider 1 did for me in Egypt) but even if I'm right, I hope the remaining levels are as engaging and interesting as this one.

I actually skipped this level the very first time because I kept dying when I was trying to lower myself into the pyramid (wasn't at full health) and decided to try something different. Playing Unfinished Business on the PSX might have helped a bit because in the PC version it's crystal clear the middle section where you can jump in and skip the whole thing is shut off.

The last part of that level is pure insanity. Although the spike traps and crawler Atlantean fights at the top before you reach the final area are entirely optional, they are still some of the hardest segments to do in the game.

Phil Campbell really did a phenomenal job with Unfinished Business. I can't wait to play after I'm done with Tomb Raider 2.

I hope The Hive was a great experience to you. It's the level that will drive you insane (even moreso if you're playing Unfinished Business on PSX and restricting yourself to save crystals) but it really feels accomplished in making this the last level of Tomb Raider 1 with how hard and difficult it is to survive through that madness. I wasn't a big fan of it at first but quickly rose through the ranks as I replayed it more and more of it and came to appreciate the effort they poured into it.

Catacombs of Talion was a very solid level. I'd say the pathing and design is superior to pretty much most levels on Tomb Raider 2 but it still feels a bit sub-par compared to worlds you're traveling in Tomb Raider 1 at this point. I think it balances out with combat - the fights are just amazing and enemy placement is pretty well thought up (never feels easy but it's always fair). I'd just like to mention that this level has, bar none, the best moment of the Tomb Raider series so far to me - that dark place you enter and hear a ton of Yeti's roaring, completely blind to your surroundings. I was lucky enough to fight them all at the same time as sometimes 2 Yetis can get stuck and that really takes away a lot of tension from that fight. That thing looked like something straight of a horror movie. Even even horror games struggle to create scenes just as fearful and atmospheric as that one.

I'll refrain from commenting on Ice Palace because I only have terrible things to say about it.

Temple of Xi was.. a mixed bag. I felt like this level had a lot of potential but the devs never give you time to breathe and enjoy the environment. It's just trap after trap after trap and it gets a little bit tiresome. Some of the traps are well thought up but others are just way too cheap and it feels like the devs saying "Gotcha!". Because of this, the level design ends up reinforcing save points pretty much after you finish any section, never making the stakes feel high since you'll just reload and lose like 2 minutes of progress.

That stupid springboard gimmick returns, particularly to find the Jade Dragon, but it's generally less annoying than in the previous level. Combat is also pretty poor with the devs resorting to enemies ambusing you to make them feel a threat. The spider nest was the highlight of the level (and smartly designed to use your Flares to light up your surroundings for an entire area) but not good enough by itself for me to consider Temple of Xi a great level. On a final note, I thought it was particularly disgusting to show you the Golden Dragon near the end, making you realize the only time you could obtain it was in beginning - sure, now you now its location but what's the point if when you finish the game you have infinite ammo?

Anyway, next level started off like Lara having taken too much LSD or something like that. I can't quite make anything out of it for far because I've only played a minute or so but unfortunately I feel like it's just going downwards from here. Hopefully I'll be wrong.

It was actually one of my favorites because it truly felt like it embodied the idea of Lara alone using her (the players) wits to navigate dangerous environments. More than any other part of the first game it felt specifically designed to prevent intruders and overcoming the traps and level design felt immensely rewarding.
The Hive put every move you learned through the first game to the test and by doing so increased the sense of accomplishment felt when beating it.

Lara's LSD trip was, without a doubt, one of the most surprising adventures of Tomb Raider so far. I honestly did not expect such a great level with such a bizarre setup. Floating Islands tied with Barkhang Monastery for my favorite level of Tomb Raider 2.

The platforming and puzzle solving really pushed limits with developers enganging the player in interesting ways to advance through such an otherly design - you never feel like there might just be one right way to get through a section of the level and the game rewards that short of experimentation if executed right. Enemies are extraordinaly dangerous and difficult to deal in direct combat (a throwback to the crawling atlanteans, I assume) but smartly designed to allow you to get through most encounters unscratched if like in Tomb Raider 1 you use the environment to your advantage.

I also thought that it was a great touch that the devs allowed you to get all secrets at any stage of the level and the reward is the necessary tools to fight on the last boss of the game in the next level. All of the locations of the secrets were so well picked, with some you just knowing it's got to be something there even if you can't see it yet because it's such a natural choice for it. Everything about this level just flows perfectly from the beginning to the end.

On a side note, I pumped up "Lara Plays In The Snow" OST in the background and ran through this level a second time just using the pistols and saving only 6 times to mirror TR1 save system (though I should have reduced it to 5) to see how Floating Islands stacked up against the Atlantis levels from Tomb Raider 1. Total time was clocked at 1:13:51 (about the same for Atlantis - but for a level significantly smaller) and total health packs used was 6.5 (but I only fought the Xian Warriors head-on once!). Truly a beast of a level.

Oh and I got 34 kills in Floating Island. No idea how that's possible, Stella's website lists the maximum as 26.

i would say Temple of Xian is more of a death trap because it acts like an ominous firewall against bounty hunters, robbers or anyone interested in the dagger.

Perhaps, "Temple" isn't the most appropriate name for a place like this, if we consider that a temple would be a small-medium size structure where you give your offerings or pray. That's why at the beginning you fell in that false pit.

I understood the concept of Temple of Xian, it just felt like a very repetitive level with all the traps that is constantly throwing at you and how unfair it feels at some points. I think Floating Islands was a better balance of all things that should exist in a Tomb Raider level, particularly so close to the end. Temple of Xian is just the death trap segment of The Great Pyramid on steroids with nothing else in its favor, IMO. I can see why people might have loved it but it just wasn't my thing.

>You also finish the game with no knowledge of where the dagger came (its origins)
I just assumed that much like the Scions and Atlantean origins seemed to be deep-rotted in otherly creatures who visited Earth at some point, the dagger was meant to mirror somthing like that too. Some artifact left by aliens that allowed its owner to transfigure our reality.

>>7930798
Glad to hear that anon. I wasn't a big fan of Tomb Raider 2 as a whole either but I did enjoy some levels. I can definitely see why it was not a bigger success than Tomb Raider 1 though (as evidenced by sales) - despite the marketing and comercials at the time seemingly giving off the idea that had surpassed the first game. Core Design really missed the mark in overall game structure with Tomb Raider 2 and focused on the wrong things. But I guess they wanted to try new things and I can't blame them for trying. Some levels were still a great experience.

And on the to the last two levels..

I guess I'll just put those two together because I was honestly a bit underwhelmed at the lack of content they put in for those two levels. For comparison, in The Great Pyramid you start by fighting one boss, get through the final death trap as you attempt to escape the island, as you reach your end-point you defeat the final boss and then you have one last challenge rooted in the things we love about Tomb Raider (platforming) before the game is over.

When you consider that, Dragon's Lair and Home Sweet Home are just lazy and uninspired design. The last boss is actually an interesting battle since you have so many options available to you (either fight head-on and dodge its attacks, hide in your surroundings to evade its fire or just straight in dive to catch it off guard for a few seconds in another part of the map - I went for the obvious and easy one after getting slaughtered a couple of times), which I really liked but that was pretty much the extend of it. Then the next level (or the Epilogue) is just.. so out of place and feels so weird because you never quite know where to go or what to do and you're just basically killing enemies as they come. It tries to sum up what I feel was the weakest point of Tomb Raider 2 to me and it's just so senseless since you never feel like there's something you should do to your advantage, you just stand there and defend your ground. I went around exploring the house and the garden hoping something would trigger or change the odds in my favor.. but nothing really happened and the enemies just kept coming. Felt nothing was really accomplished at the end of it - even less so when fighting enemies that just run on two sets of strategy (depending if they are wielding meele or firearms).

I should start Golden Mask today or tomorrow and I'll give my thoughts on those two. Really excited to see what Phil did with this expansion, hopefully will be as good as Unfinished Business.

The Core team in charge of the TR2 no longer had the creative genius within their ranks and they had to cope as best they could. I will not deny that like TR1 there is no other game, because each TR is unique in its own way.

Experimenting with the character of Lara and seeing how they can take advantage of the title of being a "tomb raider", is something that is difficult not only to think and write on paper, but to program and, above all, to make it work. Thanks to having taken Lara to all possible continents and in all kinds of unimaginable scenarios, it becomes easy for us to criticize and decide where Lara should be or not. If all the TRs had been the same, the audience would have been bored. Everything is based on innovation and creativity.

About the Temple of Xian, I still have the same opinion. It is the last terrestrial bastion to prevent anyone from getting the dagger. The protective monks knew the disaster it could cause, so they decided to put a diabolical gymkhana on the unfortunate man who happened to get it. I think the devs had this idea in mind when making the level. Also, isn't it better to make it a bit fun at the end? It even sounds like a phrase that Lara would say ...

To assume the origin of the artifact as something "extraterrestrial" that easily is to de-emphasize it, IMO. The Atlanteans and the Scion in TR1 have, as you have said, a proven explanation. Could the Dagger of Xian be owned by an ancient Chinese god of war? Or a malevolent soul reaper demon? How did the Chinese emperor get hold of that? I think all these questions could have been answered in-game instead of all that stupid trip through Venice or Deep Sea.

"Dragon's Lair" and "Home Sweet Home" I want to think that they were made in a hurry and running under pressure from Eidos to meet the release date. I'm sure that if they had more time, they would have developed it better (like what you say, something beyond a giant room to kill a mega dragon). However, the last level could be "saved" a bit.
After Bartoli's death, it doesn't make much sense that the followers of his sect want to kill Lara and get the dagger. I mean, their leader is dead, what are you going to get? Surely they would have killed each other to see who put the dagger in their chest first ...
Taking that out of the way, Lara arrives at her house FUCKING SICK TO DEATH of everything and after relaxing a bit, the bastards that she considered extinct are AGAIN GETTING ON HER TITS. It's the last level, you are pissed off Satan level and you have ammo to spare. Time to vent, motherfucker. Obviously, the level has its difficulty, but it is what it is. This idea of "unbridled and wild insanity" is part of the femme fatale-bad girl identity that Lara plays whenever she can.

Personally, among all the GOLDs, the first one is the only one that I liked (although I would have to honestly replay the others). Post your impressions.

I like the classic games and admittedly I have only played 1 and part of 2, but the combat is a pet peeve of mine. I've never been a fan of combat where you have little to no options when it comes to not taking damage and the game turns into spamming medkits. Sure. Just don't get angry when the servers you download the game from go down, a company decides to restrict or remove access to the game to you, or the unthinkable happens and the internet gets cut off. Hell, the publisher might decide to alter or censor the digital copy if they so desire.
Us physical chads will be the ones laughing while we have complete unrestricted access to the game that we can play whenever we want in it's original form.

Tried getting emulated TR2 to run in 21:9 with the Duckstation widescreen hack but it's too glitchy, whereas it worked perfectly with TR3. It's a shame because it makes the game more beautiful and "large scale adventure" than in 4:3 or 16:9. Anyone managed to get it working cleanly?

I don't blame them for the design choices of Tomb Raider 2. I understand creativity can only stretch so far and while I think they tried to focus on the weakest points of Tomb Raider 1, the truth it those things did get better in Tomb Raider 2. I suspect Tomb Raider 3 will follow the same trend but that also means it's more likely to deviate further from Tomb Raider 1.

Regarding the storyline I think they intentionally left it wide open precisely because they had provided an explanation in the previous game so they knew the players had something to work with to fill the blanks. I honestly prefer it that way - sometimes they just dig deeper and we end up disappointed with the shitty explanation. But I can see why someone would see it as a bad thing given the exposition given in Tomb Raider 1 (and how they are breaking away from it in the sequel).

>>7932035
I don't understand why they did break them into two levels though. Might as well as put the last boss in Floating Islands and focus a bit more on making Home Sweet Home something more than just all clear level? The concept could be amazing with some ingenious level design, TBQH.

I will post my impressions soon but I think they are likely diverge from yours anon.

Starting off with Cold War, there's not much I can say about this level. There's nothing particularly striking or unique to it, I think it's just trying to pick on Tomb Raider 2 level design structure and work with it. It's a level that is just there and serves as the introduction to the new adventure. Two things I was particularly happy though. I like that they cut the bullshit of getting your items mostly from enemies and put the focus back on exploring the area to get your resources. I also think it was a great touch to place the Uzis in such a peculiar location, winking back to players who remember well Return to Egipt.

Fool's Gold was the most combat-oriented level from all of Tomb Raider so far. I can understand why people might have hated this level, I cannot blame them because it's everything that players who enjoy exploration and platforming are most likely to reject, but I have to respect the devs for really pushing this idea forward and actually creating a level that feels tough and challenges many of the approaches we would usually use against human enemies. I think they really hit the mark here but unfortunately replaying the level also exposes why its difficulty is so strongly felt in the first run - most of the dangerous situations in Fool's Gold depend entirely on ambushes and desorientation of the player and when you're prepared for that a second time it's a lot easier to manage those sneak attacks and crowd control your enemies. I was very surprised to find that Fool's Gold clocked 1:29:02 and total health packs used was only 6.0 when running it with pistols only. It felt the hardest level of the expansion.

Furnace of the Gods was, for me, the best level of the main games in Golden Mask. It really felt inspired by Indiana Jones movies (at least the way I remember it as a kid) and it's the most beautiful designed sporting the best asthetics. There's nothing negative that comes to mind except perhaps them going a bit crazy with the locations of every secret.

Now Kingdom.. is straight up bullshit. We can discuss the reason why we dislike one level or another but I don't think its ever consensual among everyone which one is worse because sometimes it's just a matter of taste - it's all about personal preference and what you're looking for in Tomb Raider. But this has so many flaws I cannot see how it's not objectively considered bad. Traps placed and designed to lure the player into its death, combat locations filled with empty holes for the player to jump into its death while trying to find safe spots, obnoxious stage progression that one is very unlikely to find about unless he is REALLY looking for or just so happens to find by mistake before dying.. and the worst offender of them all is the last location of the secret - I cannot stress out how fucking shitty that choice was considering that it was vital to unblock Nightmare in Vegas and there are zero clues about it. I get that probably thought they had a big brain moment and upped up the stakes to make this really difficult to find but I highly doubt anyone found this legitimately without a guide or the aid of some level editor since the secret is layered in a bunch of bullshit which you might scratch but still not be enough to reach the end of it. The last boss fight is also stupidly designed - yeah we get an alternate way to defeat the boss and that's kind cool but what's the point if you can just shoot it on sight and nearly kill it with the M16 before it reaches you (you get at least 2 clips before fighting the boss) or just drop down and pick a position to shoot it off safely?

I'll clarify, most of TR and TRII's levels were built by Neal Boyd and Heather Gibson. Only one level from each game was built by someone else. Sanctuary of the Scion was built by Toby Gard and Temple of Xian was built by Richard Morton. Richard Morton continued to design levels for the rest of the Core games, while the others left after 2 AFAIK. I can post a list of who built what if you're interested.

Not the same anon but I'm interested as well; were each level really developed by single devs? Especially as the team got bigger for the sequels, I'd imagine it became more collaborative?

Well I'm the opposite of that anon, I played TR3 first and now going through TR2, so my opinion is a bit tainted.
Just completed the intro, Venice and Bertoli's Hideout and while the atmosphere is fine, there's way too much gunfight combat, the worst and most dated aspect of the games imo, and the enemy placement is especially bullshit with enemies that start firing while Lara is still in the water etc.

Meanwhile the level design is not particularly inspired. It's quite straightforward and predictable. I think it's a weak intro, and like I'm playing an action game rather than an adventure. By comparison, India's in TR3 is tighter yet much more sprawling, full of little secrets and intriguing design details that draw you in, less linear, much more focused on exploration/platforming/traps/puzzles etc.

What are your issues with TR3's level design? I know some anons don't like that it's less linear, because that also makes it more backtracky, and there's a blatant quality difference between the nature levels vs the urban levels; but I have to say I enjoyed even London and Area 51 more than Venice so far. I'm hoping this is just a weak start and it gets more inspired/with less combat afterwards.

Nightmare in Vegas. Starting off this level I knew it would be polarizing with it's weird vibe right off the bat. But I just love how it kicks off, the isolation in this strange setting with footprints being heard all over the place. I think it's so well accomplished because the very first few areas you progress slowly, hiding behind corners and using the camera to see if there's anyone around - it feels like you're trying to sneak in before your position is discovered and you have to take action.

I might have missed out on the magnum and the uzis (since you can find ammo all over the place for them) but having to ride with my shotgun only really felt like a throwback to Home Sweet Home and put me in a state of anxienty when I suddently realized I was out of ammo for it during the second battle against "it" on the streets and would have to fight the last boss just using the pistols.

I'm not ashamed to admit I got filtered in the "climbing" part because I thought the game was telling you that jumping up and down that structure was a no no (I tried that like dozens of times) only to learn that it literally meant you can escalate it (but shouldn't). Such a nice and original touch by the devs right there - giving you clues but confusing you by making you think that sign means something else your head has cooked up.

The last boss felt like a hell of a threat. You know the last secret is right there but you have to get through the boss first and you got a lot of traps along the way to make your job more difficult. Then you have to get out of there and go back up so you have space to dodge and fight the boss. And while evading/dodging the boss is always hard, at least you're given you the right tools to actually try and make through it unscratched if you're really that good at using the environment around you at the right times. What a way to finish off Golden Mask!

Offshore rig and diving area: well now you can tell it's a Neal section, rather dull industrial environments, even more focus on combat, feels quite similar to the Area 51 levels, even starts the same... level design is less interesting but he does combat better than Heather, enemy placement is less frustrating and gunfights feel more satisfying, I was expecting them to be a slog but overall the levels has a pleasant fast pace to make up for their unoriginality.
