DOS-9x: Pentium 3, ISA Soundblaster 16, 256mb of RAM, Voodoo3.
9x-XP: P4/A64, Soundblaster Audigy, 1gb of RAM, Geforce 5700+ for max compatibility, 6800 for best performance but only certain drivers work in 98 and table fog/8 bit paletted textures for a few games.

Some contrarian, pedantic shitheads will say you can cross into Pentium 4/Athlon XP/64 with ISA/DMA for older soundcards but these boards will be rare and expensive. You're going to have to sacrifice DOS sound compatibility or the speed/convenience of faster CPUs/GPUs/buses. You'll have to build for DOS/98 or 98/XP with fringe exceptions. A lot of DOS games will be fine with PCI soundcards but enough of them will have problems to notice.

>> No.7910545

P4 2.4ghz, 1gb, Geforce 5900XT (not as awesome as it sounds, barely a 5800 in practice, but nice enough), SB Live + YMF744 (better DOS FM) PCI soundcards, 128gb SSD, 24x CDROM drive, mobo USB2 and ethernet. Dualbooting 98 and XP, occasional DOS usage. 17" CRT. Sidewinder 3D Pro and Interact ProPad 6 game controllers.

>> No.7910568

>>7910526
>>7910545

These. You can always dual boot, but if you're primarily focusing on 90's DOS-based games, go Win98 with a P3, SB16, etc. That'll get you the best compatibility/stability for older titles.

>> No.7911253

I have an ancient Toshiba Satellite laptop I want to touch up. I need to replace its ancient 4200 (!) rpm HDD and was thinking about a PATA SSD or equivalent.
What would be better: an old native PATA SSD (I say 'native' because later PATA SSDs are SATA SSDs with an adapter, and those aren't recognized by some old BIOS) or a CompactFlash with an IDE converter?

Well do you want to play games released before or after 2000? MS-DOS and Win 9x shit won't work on a PC build from the early 2000s. Windows 2000 and XP are based on the NT kernel not the 9x kernel, and there are compatibility issues to consider when building a PC to play games of the time.

>Isn't that kind of overkill for /vr/ though? I'd expect at least a actual ISA sound card too.
I mean do you really need an ISA soundcard in year 99-00 build? Live! cards got a pretty competent SB Pro/16 emulation, and with Aureal cards you can hook midi daughterboard up.
But with slot1 mobo you still got an option (just keep in mind you need a PSU with -5V rail for some superfancy soundcards).
>What do you mean?
Ultras is a top of the line GF2. Naturally, they are rare and fuckoff expensive.
>It's very nice. Add SCSI and it would be a perfect high end build.
Thanks. SCSI stuff is a bit too loud. And it's pretty hard to get an hdd in good condition since most of them were used and abused 24/7 as part of server equipment.

True. They are pretty rare and often expensive. But a Ultra is just a binned GTS with better memory, usually you can overclock a GTS to pretty much the same performance.
The Ultra cards look nice though, the GeForce2/3 (and their Quadro relatives) with the blue or green heatsinks and PCBs are just super nice.

I guess you have a GTS yourself. I always thought that you needed a GeForce3 with Pixel Shaders to get the glow effects in Halo CE but looking at the ad here about the GeForce2 GTS, apparently the GTS did have the glow around the plasma and stuff in Halo, while the GeFore2 MX didn't? (I have a MX and I don't have the effects).
Thanks.

>Oh man. Hope one day we will get some pre xbox era leaks.
Pretty sure the Apple 1999 trailer is from before Microsoft bought Bungie (that was in 2000 or 2001, this trailer is actual Apple even in 1999 when the game was still supposed to be Macintosh exclusive).

I used pentium 2 400 mhz at the time and considered it to be very powerful, many were still on pentium 1s.
I have a pentium 3 with a rage 128, that video card is too slow to even run the ps1 port of driver at full speed but can run quake 3 in 640x480 at 60 fps.
I ripped my original games using nero and play the games using the image drive, probably a lot better software to use such as alcohol 120 which I have and use sometimes.
A couple of my favorite games are Normality and Carmageddon.

That's what I thought, but when I looked at the MX and GTS side by side, the MX has none at Pixel Shaders while the GTS is listed as Pixel Shader 0.5, I guess a very basic implementation of it that enables those effects.

Since I can guarantee I don't have effects like the green glow in pic related or the glow in the GTS commercial with my MX card. Asking if you know if your GTS has them.
Thanks.

The thing is, while it was a proto pixel shader thingamajig (called Nvidia Shading Rasterizer) it was nothing but proof-of-concept, and in real life was it was only implemented for a couple of obscure tech demos.

Unfortunately I can't confirm it now since my GTS is long gone, but I'm pretty sure I had aforementioned effects, just no as bright and pronounced.

I don't see why there should be an issue. If the speed is the same, it should be fine. If it was faster, I think it would down clock to 1600 speed. But you might have to do that manually in the BIOS. Corsair Vengance DDR3 has good compatibility from my experience with it.

Yes, if the DDR3 is faster than 1600, it will just run at slower 1600 speeds.
Some motherboards have a table of compatible RAM too that's tested, but 99.9% of the time, if it's the same standard (DDR1, DDR3, etc) it will work.

There was also a period where a lot of low quality capacitors came from China (called the capacitor plague) which is mostly early 2000's equipment. So P4 motherboards fall exactly into that period.
Recapping is generally a good idea for anything older since caps just don't have a good shelf life, some hardware from even the 80's could still be just fine, specially if you give the caps time to heal slowly, but you never know if the crash you encountered, etc was a problem of a power ripple because of a bad cap or something else, so just to minimize those problems, might as well change the caps. That's specially true for analog things, like CRTs or sound cards, where a bad cap can make the picture out of focus or shake or the sound too quiet, etc.

It's the highest common denominator for a high end DOS+Win9x build. Hardware with ISA support is easy to find and configure, it's not too new and not too slow, plus manages even oldest DOS games with now available tools to slow down the computer to make them run at the right speed.
I used to have a SS7 machine but after I could just combine it with my Win9x machine, saves space and makes things easier.

I have a SS7 machine right now because i enjoy having an AT case, but i do find myself annoyed sometimes at how the ~450mhz CPU just isn't enough to run some of the 3D stuff i want. I also have a Socket A board but that feels too "new" where i might as well be using a modern pc at that point so i just dont use it... I'm starting to think that IBM-PC compatibles in general might be a waste for retroing because they're too similar to modern stuff, except with more hardware problems and incompatibilities.

Yeah, makes for a very decent machine for the time, even plays a few games that a couple years newer pretty well.
Plus I stuck a AWE32 and Voodoo 2 in there too, so most of DOS and a bunch of very specific Glide-only and specially Glide DOS games work perfectly fine (i.e. Carmageddon).
Pretty happy how it turned out.

>Is there a reason for a 2GTS over a 4MX?
You mean the GeForce2 MX400 or GeForce4 MX4*0?
Well the GTS is a tad faster card that came out in 2000, while even the GeForce2 MX400 came out in 2001, as I said, I'm trying to stick to 2000 and older, the only part that's newer than 2000 is one of the SCSI drives currently in it. Also pretty sure the ThermalTake copper heatsink I have in it right now is like 2002 too.

It's not about "feel", it's about compatibility.
A P3 with a ISA slot can do everything a SS7 can but more, while a modern computer needs software emulations to do many of those things the P3 and SS7 machine do natively.

>they're too similar to modern stuff
Modern PCs aren't even PC-Compatible without CSM and you need things like DOSBox, software wrappers or PCem to get access to Glide, EAX, OPL synths, etc, things that are not 100% compatible or true to their hardware originals.

>Got rid of it
Recapping is quite literally the most common thing in this old hardware hobby, yet all the time you see people saying they threw away their CRT because a cap blew or their picture was messed up because a cap was busted.

>Who do you even take these goddamn things to when they break?
First thing I do when I get a CRT is:

1) Clean inside and out.
2) Recap.
3) Recalibrate.

Then I'll start using it and if I find anything other wrong with it, after that I focus on that repair.
If it's broken beyond reasonable repair, I use it for parts for other ones.

>that could probably kill me seems like a bad idea.
That's why you need experience, which comes with years doing it.

>formal electronics training
Many hobbyist are more educated in their specific hardware fields than people with "formal electronics training", it's about experience and knowledge, not where or how you got it.

I've gotten plenty of high voltage zaps over the years, because I started when knowledge about it wasn't even as easily available as today and learned the hard way.
I'm not saying stick your tongue into the CRT, but it's quite hard to actually get yourself killed by one, but learn what not to do beforehand and use safety equipment and practices (decharge capacitors beforehand, wear rubber gloves, rubber soles, use your right hand near things you think might contain high voltage, etc.)

This. There's a big emphasis on specialization and many "obsolete" things aren't even taught as part of general electronics education. Anyone who bult a kit TV or did his own repairs back in the day is going to know infinitely more about TVs than someone who specializes in DSPs and has never seen a tube in his life.

I tried to add more ram. But whatever i put in rejected it.
Doesnt matter. Seems to run all early 2000 games well.

The Thermaltake cooler you have there looks like a Volcano 7 which I had in those days, which I am trying to recreate with my Win2k machine. In building your own computers, they tend to reflect the person a bit which is what makes them so interesting. I get you're going with period correct, and that period did have a lot of great games to play.

>>7938824
Pretty close, but you do have a nice ISA slot for that classic SoundBlaster audio that I love. I'm not going to make suggestions, as that's for you to decide what is the best for your situation. Maybe consider, as I am at the moment, to make dueling P3s, as that time period was great for networked RTS and FPS games.

Most big computer speakers with at least two drivers in one speaker and a port. The Rolands aren't even that good compared to most higher end ones. You might want to recap them and add some plastic wool into them for dampening when you find any.
There's also the Creative surround set with woofer, but that's expensive too these days.
