They aren't comparable. Mario is about speed and beating dozens of levels, Megaman is absolute mastery of a dozen and a half or so levels. Their core gameplay is completely different.

I DO like Megaman 2 better, but either one is a fine game.

As much as I love Megaman, the 2nd game had too many flaws in my opinion, like broken weapons and unballanced energy usage. Most bosses could be killed with 2 or 3 hits.

As much as I love Mega Man (it is, hands down, my favorite series), I can't help but feel like there's so much wasted potential there. Every game is sort of by-the-numbers and it's fun when one of the games bucks it and does something different, but it's always still sort of tame. Like there's so much that could be done but the formula is so rigid.

Romhacks like Rockman 4: Minus Infinity are pretty fucking cool, and put the actual games to shame.
