Meanwhile, the PlayStation 2 has an official Component Video cable and that console is now deemed retro. Same with Gamecube but of course that's rare. But then Wii component cables are abundant and you can play GC games on that. As for Xbox, the component cable kit for the Xbox (which is official) is also rare but doesn't demand nearly as much money as GC component cables.

I've been doing something like this with my composite consoles hooked up to my VCR which hooks up to my TV by component. I'm still getting a composite signal right? I'm not retarded enough to think the signals are truly converted but I am curious about what is happening there. Only difference I've noticed is somewhat sharper text.

it really depends on the system / game

sometimes i honestly prefer the sacrilegious sharp pixel perfect hdmi look

othertimes, i use anything from RF, to AV, to component, or even s-video (n64)

crt, gaming monitor, or even normie flat panel

depends on what you need

an RF > AV modulator is cheap and much smaller

If you get a really good S-VHS-capable VCR it may have a 3D comb filter in it. If so, it means a small amount of lag but near S-Video quality with a composite input. I ran Phantasy Star through mine and it was easy to tell the difference with the enemies that had translucent wings. With the S-Video comb filter applied it looked dithered, but with composite passthrough it still had the blurred transparency. Curious how it would change images like this one.
>>7907053
I think there's some merit to your post. If a game doesn't use any composite artifacting at all it may look just fine on a normie flat panel. RF is fine if you've got a Famicom or NES and you skip the RF Unit in favor of an RCA to coaxial cable. Worked pretty well for the Atari 2600 I had.

For the longest time I couldn't even play my family's PS1 because we only had the RF cable and had already upgraded to more modern CRTs. By the time composite cables became the standard, I already moved on to Gamecube. We eventually did get a composite lead from a carboot sale in the mid 2000s and I didn't even notice the difference in picture quality at the time.

Now that I think of it, even the Dreamcast I picked up a few years ago came with an RF cable, so that just goes to show how little people cared about picture quality back then.

fpbp.

All the years of me and my dad spelunking behind goliath tvs and tv stand furniture into the cavern of dust and lost pennies to screw that shit in. And of course setting the channel to 4 because 3 was for cucks.

When my friend had one of those flat-screen crts (not flat screen liek you think today, but simple the front screen was not curved), with composite ports on the FRONT and a dedicated VIDEO channel, it blew my fucking my mind. I was so jealous. Not picrelated, but looked similar (was gray and I think a popular model)
