Because knowing all the exact, out of the way places you often only get one chance to get to for all the emeralds is awful game design. Sonic Advance series did this also, times a million cus there were shitass rings/chaos to find. They avoided it in Sonic Chaos by allowing bonus stage entry at 100 rings, but having them as progressively harder mini stages you're gonna fuck up once or twice.

Yes. This is the bad ending where Robotnik kills Tails because you didn't get all six chaos emeralds. You can save him in the good ending, but it's kind of a bitch to get all of the chaos emeralds because of how damn easy it is to miss some of them even if you know where they are.

Group suicide? Nah. I will say this, I had Sonic 2 for the GameGear when I was 11. At that point, I only had Sonic 1 for the Game Gear. I loved Sonic 1 on the GameGear and could play through it to the end in one sitting. The Game Gear Sonic 2 was a challenge in comparison. That first boss is a filter in itself. Can't tell you how many times I dies before I found out the rock patterns. Then... there is the hang glider stage in the second zone, which is very trial and error until you get that right. The water skipping stage wasn't too bad. But each Stage of the 8bit Sonic 2 required you to learn some new gimmick. I did complete the game however. But then, it took me forever to find all the chaos emeralds. I know people will say the SMS isn't that hard. But the GameGear port does ramp up the difficulty. Also, Sonic 2 Master System was not released in North America. So all we had was the GG version.

I really like this hybrid design. I wonder why Sega felt the need to switch it up entirely for the plain red dress. Red is already Knuckles' color, and the classic design makes her stand out more.
