What are your thoughts on Psikyo shooters?

>> No.7902927

If you've played one you've played them all.

Yeah, that's kind of how I felt at least with all the Strikers and Gunbird ones. Playing Gunbird II after Strikers II and 1999 and seeing it had the exact same scoring system and even used the same sprites for power items almost made them feel like cheap shitty Chinese games or something. That mixed with the crappy music and literal fucking Microsoft word art ship title cards didn't help either.

I like the gameplay though, I never really thought I'd be into memorizers but it's really satisfying to learn the latter boss dances and ride the eye of the storm through all the attacks. I just wish the rank floor wasn't so slow, it actually makes some stuff harder with bullets lingering around so long

How to spot Psikyo shooters in the wild.

I have to say, even if Psikyo shooters don't do much out of the ordinary mechanically, at the very least they usually offer a solid experience and pretty nice presentation. The Strikers series, Tengai, Samurai Aces, they all look and play fine, I think the Gunbird series and Dragon Blaze are particularly gorgeous looking. So yeah, no grudge.

I like all shmups including bullet hells but I'm not part of the shmup community that looks down on Psikyo. Strikers 1999 is my favorite of the bunch, Zero Gunner 2 is a fun novelty

I thought psikyo is kind of on a pedestal in the greater shmup scene. People seem to think it's the more traditional style of faster but fewer bullets and memorizey bosses done right. As far as I know only CAVEfags hate psikyo

Didn't Psikyo copy Cave's bullet hell concept eventually though? Dragon Blaze at least feels only mildly different from early Cave games in my opinion.

They had amazing pixel art and chose some great artists for character designers. Sometimes the bullets are a bit fast for reactions, but can be overcome with some memorization.

not as exciting as Sonic or Castlevania, but they're okay for some mindless fun. I 2-alled all the Strikers games in Barcelona one summer. Piss easy to be honest

so?
shooters are just grinding routes into muscle memory until you can do them mindlessly, same as speedrunning minus the popularity

I find them all very similar. Like they're all a take on the Sonic Wings formula in some way.
I'd say the Gunbird games are probably my favorite ones.
