Best beatemup are all Capcom (AvP and Final Fight being at the top of the list) with SoR and Golden Axe following closely. Altered Beast is a little further back, but still fun.

Konami shit other than Violent Storm can eat a dick.

Shmups? Cave wins. Progear and Deathsmiles are arguably their weakest, but still good.

Below Cave, Milestone did a couple of good ones (Chaos Field and Radirgy).

Then you have G.Rev with Border Down. Under Defeat is a miss.

Konami actually wins on this, with all Gradius (except 5), Parodies, and Salamander entries being great.

Psikyo and Seibu are also good. Psikyo's stuff is pretty easy, though.

Takumi is known for Giga Wing (2 is lackluster) and Mars Matrix, both excellent.

Treasure, Triangle, and Irem are bottom of the barrel.

Capcom doesn't even fucking count.

Best beat'em up by Capcom. Great cast of characters, robots, ninjas, charismatic enemies, the sci-fi pulp feeling, etc. The game looked more like a living american comic book than Cadillac & Dinosaurs, in my opinion. Btw, my fav character is Ginzu, one of the best ninja characters by Capcom.

They tried to accomplish the same style of game with Battle Circuit, but even if it had some great features, the game was much more dull, and the robot enemies were boring.

I think Captain Commando could have used better character design. The whole game feels a little rushed. Lacks a bit of polish. I've never heard anyone saying they hate it. Its a decent game.

There are a few arcade games like this: the two Dungeons and Dragons games, King of Dragons, Knights of the Round. However, River City Ransom might be more what you want.
